WoW is derivative, always has been, but it puts its own spin on ideas that are more defined in other mediums. The only “baggage” the term has is ones you put there yourself. If you saw a character ripping on a guitar while lightning (or whatever) fried their enemies, would you not call the image that creates as one of a bard? What would you imagine a Jaina/Khadgar/Malfurion level bard could do?
dear god ANYTHING that is ranged - they took one away from us and keep giving us melee
I’m gonna stop you right there. We have a necromancer, it’s called an Unholy Death Knight. Tinker could be interesting, but I don’t know about Bard
Blood elf druid
Blood elf shaman.
That’s all I need
I wouldn’t call that a Bard, actually.
I’d rather see 4th spec for some existing classes. A good way to fix longstanding community gripes.
Some ideas:
Hunter - Ranged Survival
DK - Caster Necro/Lich
Rogue - Combat or Dark Ranger (Bow)
Shaman - Warden, 2H Tank
Mage - Tri-Spec or Frost/Fire Elemental
Monk - 2nd DPS spec that uses weapons (Staff?)
Warrior - Juggernaut, 2H Tank spec
Pally - Zeal, Sword and Shield DPS spec
Priest - Tank spec? Or Holy DPS caster
Warlock - Blood Magic focus?
DH - ??
DR - already have 4
All a bard is, is someone who uses an instrument to cast spells. That’s it. From there it is whatever the developer of any game that uses the idea wants it to be. These troupes are meant to be templates, not hard rules for the only way any of these fantasies can be used.
Tinker > Necro > Bard in that order.
I really dont see how bard would work. On the casual end of the spectrum, no matter how clearly Blizz labeled it as a support/group class, there would be daily threads crying about how bad they are at doing any solo content. Meanwhile on the competitive end, either group content is balanced around a bard being there, in which case they become mandatory, or it’s not, in which case they become totally useless. There’s just no middle ground there.
That’s the thing, they don’t need to be a hard support class. They can bring as much to a group as any other class. Even if added, druids would probably still bring more support to the table.
But if they’re not a support class then what’s the point of having them? They’d just be one of the other classes but fluffed with music instead of holy/nature/elements etc.
What is any class in WoW? They all either hit an enemy with a stick with X color effect for “flavor”, or wave their hands to summon a color that will either damage your enemy or heal an ally. What is the point of having multiple of any role?
Fantasy is the name of the game. They aren’t going to add a new class that is incapable of performing their role in the holy trinity, so it would end up being a ranged DPS/healer class that brings maybe, maybe a little more utility than the average class.
That’s what it means to you in order to serve your argument currently.
The term is a lot more loaded than that, unfortunately.
Then the Bard is an inappropriate choice for the game.
I like the tinker/artificer idea.
I would also really love Shamans to get a tank spec. I also wouldn’t mind pet classes getting some talent options that could make them viable off-tanks. I think more tanking options couldn’t hurt, and might even help.
I know I’m not the only one. I want ogres for a race. I’ve wanted them since vanilla.
I’ve always wanted a spellbreaker class.
Tank/dps. Mid-range throwing weapons
It is as appropriate as they want it to be. The only load the term has is one you place there for yourself. Again if WoW had to stick to fantasy troupes then things like the Shadow Priest and Holy Paladins wouldn’t exist because Priests are “supposed” to be healers and Paladins are “supposed” to be tanks.
Yes, but there are mechanical concepts that dont yet exist or arent adequately represented, which Tinker and Necro can fill more easily than bard. Such as:
- Pet tank
- Ranged tank
- Additional firearm/bow user
- Dark healer
- Army of minions
Moreover, both necromancers and tinkers existed in Warcraft 3, just like every other class that has been added to the game post-launch. Bards did not, so there is no concept or template to go off of except something like D&D, where they are primarily a support class.
So which is it? Is the term loaded or not, because you’re telling me that it both is and isn’t.
I’m all for Tinkerer. I think a class with Tank/Healer/RDPS spec would be a good addition.
The only load is the fact that they use music as their tool to cast spells. Even that is debatable though as historically a bard is anyone who is paid to tell stories. They don’t need to be a support heavy class. They can be designed to DPS and heal just as well as any other class.
