Cataclysm Garrosh was nice.

He was a good antagonist for Alliance, and he was a controversial leader for Horde.

Id take him over The Writing Rooms waifu. And id take Varian back over a crying kid.

Garrosh was, for all intents and purposes, the perfect representative of the Horde. He was a savage who deserved nothing short of complete eradication.
Now you have Sylvanas, who is just an evil character.

As someone who finds Thrall’s Horde unbearable, Vol’jin’s Horde unworthy, and Sylvanas’ Horde as contemptible, I couldn’t disagree more with your assessment of Garrosh Hellscream – up until the moment 5.4.0 hit the servers, and he was truly and fully villain-batted, he was behaving exactly as one would expect an Outland Orc to behave.

By far the best Warchief they’ve ever had, or will likely ever have.

Yeah, he seemed fine until he became Old God Orc Guy for Pandaria.

Dang rare for me to agree with an elf, but yea a proper Draenor warchief

“So you wish to face off against a REAL ORC WARCHIEF… so be it”

None of this friendzone Thrall, AFK then dies Troll, or the obvious villian

Yeah, Until MoP he was a pretty respectable leader. He killed his own general for destroying that area of druids. He even apologized to the Taurens for it.

He should have stayed warchief. His MoP treatment was unfair.

The only problem with this understanding of things is that throughout Mists of Pandaria, it’s explained to us numerous times that people who’re unprepared or undisciplined become enthralled by the various iterations of the Sha – and the only way to break this state is for someone else, a third party, to break it.

The fact that Garrosh is able to enter, and exit, the state of being Sha-empowered implies he is extraordinarily disciplined and possessing a strong emotional control. This perhaps isn’t what people think of when they think of Garrosh, but virtually all tertiary sources (i.e. comics, books, etc.) depict him as having extremely strong mental character.

TL;DR: He wasn’t considered a villain because he utilized the Sha, he was considered a villain because he called a bunch of spades spades (i.e. thought Trolls were useless, considered Blood Elves disloyal, viewed Tauren as fair-weather allies, etc.).

All fair.

I would disagree with this, though. I think, of all the Horde, Tauren have been the most loyal ally in the Horde for the longest time. And on one of the smallest things, Thrall killed some centaurs.

Oh, well, I personally agree with you – I was just trying to explain why he was considered a “villain”.

Since he didn’t really value most of the other members of the Horde, and outright oppressed a couple of them, it makes plenty of sense why they’d view him as bad – and for the Alliance, well, they’re going to be opposed to anybody making big plays on the global stage (like they were with Thrall, early on, and now Sylvanas).

IMHO, how the Alliance feels about a Horde leader shouldn’t have ever factored into what Blizzard feels compelled to do with said leader. The fact that the Alliance didn’t like Garrosh shouldn’t have guaranteed his deposition, and likewise for Sylvanas now – if she’s liked by her own constituents, she shouldn’t be removed because the Alliance doesn’t like it.

I’m pretty sure he was considered a villain because he tried to murder any dissenters and became an incredibly oppressive and racist leader.

Garrosh’s greatest sin was having the Orc’s corruption, specifically the corruption of his father, be his deepest scar and then do a 180 on that and say “yeah, Sha corruption? That’s the good stuff”.

MoP Garrosh took all the build up of Garrosh since he was a crying baby in BC to finding his own path as a leader throughout Wrath and Cata and then completely threw it out the window in MoP.

We also have to remember Garrosh taught the iron horde Iron star tech by memory. The guys kind of a genius.

A shame they decided that Cataclysm Garrosh was a result of miscommunication and they he was actually a racist, murderous thug the whole time.

I remember doing the Stonetalon quest and was like “oh dang, the Horde’s doing bad stuff but the Warchief is holding his subordinates VERY accountable for it” then they hit MoP and went “lol let’s pin civilians to stakes with arrows and use their children to force them to fight one another to the death”.

The writers have an incredible talent to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Garrosh is many things, but I don’t think “engineering genius” is one of them.

The Iron Horde were more than likely taught the Iron Star technology by the Blackfuse Company members who accompanied Garrosh to AU Draenor.

Which is what I said.

A re-play of Mists of Pandaria might be in order, friend, because the entire storyline on the Horde involves Garrosh trying to find out how to utilize the Sha without becoming a slave to it – the notion of being free from magical influence is pretty much a cornerstone of his character.

Garrosh isn’t attempting to corrupt himself, or his people, with the Sha – rather, he’s looking for ways to master it like any other magic.

He is ultimately disappointed in many among his elite servicemen and women, who aren’t quite capable of being disciplined enough to maintain control over their actions, but he himself is quite successful in maintaining his composure – suggesting a strong mental fortitude, at the very least.

I’m hoping we get to see Lightbound Garrosh when he comes over the time ways with Yrel. There is no way they aren’t setting that up as some sort of patch or expansion.

You mean:

Yeah, I could get behind that guy.
