Hello. I have previously bought a physical ‘WarCraft 3 - Reign of Chaos’ disc and played it with no problem.
I recently bought a new physical copy online, this time of ‘WarCraft 3 - Frozen Throne’. Upon attempting to install the game I get a message that I need to buy ‘Reign of Chaos’ first, as ‘Frozen Throne’ cannot be played without it.
I tried redeeming both game keys on battle.net but it says that both are already redeemed. If ‘Reign of Chaos’ is already redeemed, how can I make the ‘Frozen Throne’ files detect that? I also hope I do not have to register ‘Frozen Throne’ as the code is already redeemed, probably by the seller.
Well, this has always been the case. Frozen Throne was an expansion to the original game and requires that original game to install it. It sounds to me like you’ve actually updated to the latest version (2.0.3 aka Reforged) and the original Frozen Throne installer knows nothing about that. You DO NOT NEED a Frozen Throne key to play the latest version of the game (Reforged). It would almost certainly have been cheaper to just buy reforged than physical copies online.
Your Reign of Chaos CD key can be used to install the latest version of Warcraft III (AKA Warcraft III Reforged) on battle.net. You actually do not need the Frozen Throne key at all. Everyone who buys Reforged or installs the game with a Classic Key gets Frozen Throne for free.
To do this, open the battle.net app. At the login prompt, click the cog icon and select “Continue without logging in”
Then navigate to the Warcraft III page in the app, and click Install.
Once the download starts, you can log back into your account, and then the game will be playable as normal. WARNING: There are only two days left as of this post (November 21) before classic Warcraft III CD keys can no longer be used on battle.net!
You really should not have bought a physical copy of the expansion- it is nothing more than a collector’s item at this point and if you want to actually play the game, I’d suggest getting a refund becuase you no longer need Frozen Throne standalone to play all of the game. Physical copies of the game installed seperately from battle.net can not play online- if you attempt to, they will simply patch to the latest version (aka Reforged).
Also: If you don’t actually have the CD keys on your account (you said that it said they were already redeemed) then you have been scammed and you should get your money back or do a chargeback. To check if you have a Classic Key on your account, follow this link and log in to your account:
Please check your current game version. In one corner of the screen at the main menu it should indicate the current version.
I have a strong suspicion you updated your game and you are now on the Reforged version, and this is why you cannot install Frozen Throne. It is NOT NEEDED if you are on version 2.0.3- Frozen Throne is now included and you will not be able to install it seperately.
