Warcraft 3 versus mode cannot change race

Hi Blizzard Tech

I can no longer change race in bnet versus mode, i am currently stuck with undead and there is NO option for me to switch.

I tried 1) repair 2) uninstall and reinstall 3) there is no addon or interface added in my setting at all

please advise how to solve?

A proper uninstall and then reinstall of the game should definitely fix that kind of weird issue.

I haven’t seen this happen on my end, and I haven’t heard of anyone else, so a clean reinstall is usually the best solution.

You just gave him a solution that he already tried. I don’t have anything against you but sometimes your responses do not contribute to anything and by saying you don’t have that problem I don’t see how would that help him?

I see that he tried reinstalling, but sometimes a proper clean uninstall and reinstall is necessary for issues like this. That usually fixes weird problems with Battle.net versus mode.

I’m tired of people picking on people for this. By saying he can’t reproduce it, all that means is “Sorry, I can’t help you because I can’t reproduce it.” It’s not something to take offense to. And it’s also important feedback for anyone investigating bugs because it helps determine the type and scope of an issue. So as much as you feel it’s unhelpful for someone to say they can’t reproduce a bug or issue, it has value you may not understand not having worked in game development. In saying things like this, there is no intent of minimizing someone’s issue or calling them a liar or anything like that.

Outside of that, all we can do is guess on possible reasons based on our experiences in order to come up with possible troubleshooting steps.

The only suggestion I can make is one case where the race buttons can be disabled is if you played in a tournament, the tournament is over, and you haven’t changed modes back yet. If you’re on the tournaments tab but no tournament is active, the buttons will be grayed out.

If the OP posted a screenshot (Use the </> button on the formatting bar to post links), that might shed some light on the issue.

You are joking, right? It has no contribution if you repeat every possible fix that he already tried.

I didn’t say you did… but people have. Stop assuming everything is personal. I have gotten responses in the past that suggest that I think people are lying if I say I don’t have the bug/issue and that if I don’t have it, they must be making it up. Which I have never said that, but people have made that assumption before.

No, I’m not joking and it has valuable contribution. I didn’t say anything about repeating fixes. You keep conflating my responses with those of others.

And believe it or not, sometimes doing something multiple times can have different results, particularly if other fixes are tried/attempted, that can change the results the next time you reboot/reinstall/do whatever. You keep focusing on the wrong parts of people’s statements…

Saying basic things without detailed information doesn’t contribute to anyone, it just wastes time. I’m not in game development but I did finish a master’s degree in software engineering so I know what good and useful information is regarding a certain bug but okey, we are different, maybe it would help someone.

It’s about scope. Knowing how many people do and don’t have an issue can narrow down the location of and possible reasons for a problem, like if 100% of everyone is experiencing it, if some people do and some people don’t, or if it’s an edge case. And depending on which category it falls in, the cause can be different.

Of course, but that would make sense only if developers made a survey or asked users directly for their input or if they made a change and now you want to give feedback. In this particular case, it does not contribute to anything.

Game develoeprs don’t routinely conduct surveys about bugs. Feedback on the forums and in social channels is often the only way to communicate these things and reports from players are how they find out about bugs in the first place.

It’s not ideal by any means, but this is the only channel we have to communicate these things.

I haven’t shifted anything anywhere. I don’t know what you’re talking about- this is all relevant to the topic. What you do is your choice but what you are saying is simply not true.

Can you

  1. navigate to “C:\Users\Vaellian\Documents\Warcraft III”
  2. open “War3preferences.txt”
  3. search for “ammrace=8” and set to “ammrace=2”. Note that ‘8’ may be a different number, but if memory serves the number 8 is the coding for Undead, whereas 2 is Orc.
  4. save the file, launch w3, check if your race is now set to Orc instead
  5. let us know if this resolved the issue

If you do not see “ammrace” then manually add “ammrace=2” under [Gameplay]. You can also entirely delete the war3preferences file. The game will generate a new one upon booting if it can’t locate it. In turn resolving any potential corruption in the file. Note that deleting the file will reset all option menu’s back to new installation default.

While this will change the race that’s auto selected when you log in to the game (generally, it’s the last one you played), I don’t think this has anything to do with the issue otherwise- The only things I know that can cause the UI buttons to be disabled is you’re actively searching for a game, or you’re on the tournament tab while no tournament is active.
