Warcraft 3 on Steam

With the success of Diablo 4, and now Diablo 2 on steam brings attention to why not have Warcraft 3 on Steam? People are currently debating this right now on Reddit, but I figured it would perhaps be more beneficial to ask the question here.

Pros for Warcraft 3 on Steam
1.) Reselling the game at full price on Steam, like Diablo 2 resurrected did.
2.) Increase playerbase
3.)With Warcraft 3 on Steam could separate AT vs RT.
4.) Steam achievements,
5.) Increasing Warcraft 3 appeal like Age of Empires.

Cons
I couldn’t think of anything. As long as it’s not a bad game like Overwatch 2, I think Warcraft 3 should do fine, I’d rebuy it on Steam.

I wouldn’t until the larger front facing bugs, which some have been around for a very long time, are cleared up.

One that immediately jumps to mind is the wins/losses not always being recorded.

As all those new people start running into the bugginess, it will likely push them to W3C where things work. And the Battlenet population will dwindle right back down.

And I thought you said that you restart your Steam spam yearly. You’ve recently done that across a couple games. Has it been a year already?

Well, there are 153 upvotes right now on Reddit to put Warcraft 3 on Steam, so 153 copies sold at 40$, that’s 6140 gross right there. Then 6140 times 25%((Steam cut)) = 1530. 6140 - 1530 is 4,590$ Total for Blizzard.

Fixing bugs often costs around $ 100 to $1,000, so I’m thinking Blizzard would gladly recoup their costs by fixing the bugs, then putting the game on Steam. I’m sure the game will sell much more than 153 copies on Steam as well.

That depends on when they fix them. The one I mentioned has been around for a very long time. It could have been fixed at any point since.

It’s not a sales concern. Putting it on Steam in the current condition risks exacebating an already damaged public opinion. In fact, the better the sales, the worse the backlash.

I’m not against a game being on Steam. I wouldn’t be surprised if WC3R ends up on steam at some point. My concern is the state that the game is in. It’s same issue with SC2.

They will be as too when well ask mommy Microsoft they dont want your measly 4 grand they will do it anyway for good optics when they feel its the correct time.

In it’s current state that last thing I want to see is it being pushed for sale on another platform.
MM balance is god awful. Skewed to one team more often than not. MMR gain/loss, and ranking is a mess.
Games not counting. UI bugs. etc.

Steam surfaces individual games to players who are already browsing a specific genre, through categories, recommendations, and storefront visibility.

Listing a game on Steam can help increase its player base.

Tbh wc3 as a sellable game to me is more marketable for its custom game marketplace than the base game at this point. I think it makes sense to put it on steam but they wont until its ready and weather it sells well or not it can only mean more players in the pool of a fairly dead game whats better than fresh noobs to stomp seems like a W to me

Since patch Version 2.0.0 onward, the game is definitely considered “ready.”
It has all the updates, balance fixes, and features needed to attract new players, so putting it on Steam now would make sense for expanding the player base.

Not yet, there are many bugs still that would drive off new players.

Considering the issue with win/loss records, menus that glitch, games that won’t load, the ATRT issue, etc, etc, putting it up for a larger audience to suffer through would just reignite the firestorm, but now on a larger scale.

They should put it on Switch 2. The Switch 2 joy-cons have a built in mouse feature (of course actual mice work too) so you could pretty easily make the game work on the system.

Ready has nothing to do with the game and everything to do with the Microsoft backend as well as meeting scheduled dates maybe advertising who knows what the plan is but they will likely do it once they have all that sorted i dont think speculating will change the rate it goes at but it will happen and likely at the standard slow Microsoft pace.

And you’re acting like it’d take 1000’s of dollars to fix the bugs. I just did all the math for you, the point I made to Blizzard would still make major profit bring WC3 to steam, and would easily regain all that money for fixing the bugs.

No I’m not. I’ve only said that Bliz isn’t quick to fix things, even with it being only on their own platform. Again, so far, it hasn’t been about money. In fact, i’ve never brought money into this. I even discounted it in one of my replies above.

In the game dev industry, thousands would be cheap. Just FYI. That means a few people putting in a handful of hours.

A developer is not very expensive nowadays.
AI-assisted coding is not officially recommended, but it can help speed up fixes and is essentially free.
Mid-level developers might cost around 15€/hour, and students are even cheaper.
Fixes require - few hours, we done 2-3 / day.
Regardless, putting a game on Steam is a huge advantage for any title - that’s a fact!

Are you sure there wouldn’t be issues with copyright considering how many WarCraft custom maps have Naruto and other anime? I’m not clued in to Dota custom maps, do they have the same without issues?

User generated content normally isn’t counted as it isn’t made by the publisher/devs.
I suspect they would go for the same clause, even if they claim ownership of all the maps in the EULA.
