Hey folks, I’m hoping to get help with what seems to be a common issue surrounding Warcraft 3 Reforged. I will try sticking to just the facts and not to embellish or over exaggerate. I launch the game (from the Battle.net application on computer) and it goes to a black screen. I have neither sound, nor a mouse cursor, but my computer is not frozen as I can tab out of the black screen with no issue. It does not appear the application is frozen or ‘not responding’ either, from checking the Task Manager during this. I am still running on Windows 10 as well.
With the assistance of a friend who does this sort of thing on a regular basis, these are the troubleshooting steps we took that did not resolve the issue, not necessarily in order (I may be forgetting one or two things as this was a few done last week:
First we did that ‘set windowed mode’ fix suggestion and that did not resolve it.
Did the “Scan and Repair” through the launcher.
Fully uninstalled and reinstalled the game.
Turned off Nvidia game overlay.
Turned off Discord game overlay.
Turned off all background programs.
Made sure my graphics driver is up to date.
Any assistance on this matter would be much appreciated. Thank you.
Can you go to the windows “my documents” warcraft 3 and find and open the “war3preferences.txt” file. Somewhere in there, there is something dubbed like “seenintromovie=0”. Set it to =1.
It seems the game can’t load the opening intro properly and just hangs there. By manually switching the setting that it already played, it will skip the video entirely and directly boot to the option menu.
I’m not at home so I can’t really check the exact name in the war3preferences file. If it was already set to =1, make it =0 and just see if that makes any diff.
Thank you very much for the response and suggestion! I found that txt file and located the seenintromovie, changing it from 0 to 1. I no longer see just black, I do see the lion’s head door knocker thing. However, it just remains on that and does not advance any further. It seems to behave essentially the same as my initial problem, but now its no longer a black screen, it is that lion’s head. Its been well over a decade since I last played Warcraft3, but I believe that lion’s head door is supposed to open up to reveal the user interface I can interact with (menu, options, etc.)
Did you buy W3 Reforged, and do you start it from the official bnet launcher? The old legacy keys which have not been activated, can no longer be used.
Otherwise, it sounds like a connectivity issue. Try turning off virus scans and firewalls just briefly to see if you can get past the lions gate.
