WarCraft 2 Remastered - Map Editor is not launching / crashes

This is the Warcraft III forum. There’s a section in the general Blizzard forums for WC2.

Also the war2 map editor is a really really old application. You may need to install compatability features if you’re on Windows 10 or 11 to get it to work.

Blizzard’s idiotic support links led me here, there is no dedicated section for the remaster of WarCraft 2, the support system led me to multiple different points but not even a ticket system exists. Furthermore WarCraft 2 Remaster is part of the same Battle Chest of which WarCraft 3 Reforged is also part. 2nd of all, the map editor of the remaster is supposed to be updated and native as described in the product description and not ‘outdated’ and unsupported.

What is idiotic about it? it does what it’s supposed to.

The general battle.net forums are still the place for it.

Well I’d like to help you, but it opens fine for me. Otherwise, Blizzard never offered any support for the warcraft II map editor and they won’t help you with any issues other than basic troubleshooting.

Getting ridiculously enraged over a 30 year old program that was never supported in the first place is not going to get your issue solved. Try not being an jerk about it and perhaps you’ll find help.

The only advice I can offer you is right click on the executable in Windows Explorer, click properties, and try enabling compatibility mode for a prior version of Windows. Beyond that, I can’t offer you any advice as it opens and works fine for me on Windows 11.

What are you on about, I am talking about the Remaster which is a very recent complete rewrite of the entire code of WarCraft 2 !!! And the map editor was always supported, see older forums which were deleted, plus why do you think they otherwise released complete new maps after the fully updated version of the ‘classic’ (non-remaster) BNE edition were released?!!! on a physical CD in magazines no less!!!

I’m not trying to be a jerk, I am being factual and knowledgeable in face of opposition of ignorance and fanboyism.

I doubt you copy of the map editor is running, you are lying otherwise you wouldn’t suggest willy nilly solutions (btw you can equally look into your copy of the editor and in properties and read back the exact settings to me if they worked). And no again, this is the remaster we are talking about, the version which is supposed to native and NOT 30-YEARS-OLD!!!

You can say still all you want, the support links led me here, the general battle.net forums are according to the description in the links, strictly for the battle.net launcher and associated account issues, NOT for specific game-related technical issues.

Lest there be any confusion, I mean “not officially supported by Blizzard;” and by that I mean that Blizzard’s support (of the time, anyway) will not guarantee that the editor will work for everyone. “Not supported” does not mean “it won’t work” but it does mean “we can’t help you if it doesn’t.”

It aboslutely is. What would my motivation be to lie to you? Just because it does not work for -you- does not mean it doesn’t work for anybody.

Can’t see your image over here in the UK, imgur is restricted to US only.

So what were your settings to get it to work specifically?

All I get in event viewer is the following errors: Exception code: 0xc0000005, Fault offset: 0x000022b1

I didn’t have to do anything to make it work. It’s entirely possible that I have some legacy windows component or other that is needed to run it, but I can’t tell you specifically if that’s the case because I don’t know.

Also it turns out your country blocked imgur because it declined to comply with the UK’s children’s data protection standards. lol.

I think it’s because imgur doesn’t require an account to use (which is why I use it.), and since imgur doesn’t track its users or verify ages, that runs afoul of UK regulations.

You can probably get around this with a VPN but I’m not signing up for another image host just for one pic.

OK I saw it via VPN, however it looks like you are using something prior to Windows 11 or at least prior to the latest updates on Windows 11, whereas I am running the latest version… I seem to remember having gotten the classic BNE edition’s map editor to run in an earlier Windows build myself, however updates seem to have broken it. Which version of Windows are you running?

Never mind, I found a way better editor online that still works and is from Windows 3.x days lol and doesn’t need any compatibility settings whatsoever, for those interested to find a fix to my question, here is the valid answer: War2xEd 5.51 - the best map editor (621 K)

Whatever works. All I know is the included editor worked fine for me. third party ones are probably better anyway.

Yes there is. The forum button on the WarCraft II page of the battle.net app will link you to the correct forum.

The map editor works on the latest version of Windows 11. There is definitely something wrong with your system in particular rather than the map editor.

This looks like a Warcraft 2 Remastered topic - so not a Warcraft 3 Reforged.
Let’s keep it constructive.
Plus besides stardard uninstall - then check no leftovers - than re-install, that I can suggest is to ask again Tech support to solve the crash.

Pay attention armchair forum moderator.

The OP was already informed about the D2 forums. OP already found a solution. All over a week ago.

It’s one thing to dig up a thread that the OP hasn’t come back to, but to not even read it before upping your post count? The thread title even had the green check on it. You must have see it.
