this issue has apparently come about with the most recent patch.
Theres another thread about it here:

"The founding of Durotar" campaign broken since patch

Tried from a new game and an old save file I had, neither worked. Went to do the Thunder lizard quest and it just wouldn’t load my characters when I tried to come back.

I haven’t heard of any fixes yet.
