Summary of what i think about Reforged so far (Mega Thread)

Chapter 1: So what did they do right ?

From patch 1.29 base until 1.31 and the Reforged beta, in terms of new features to the game, and those added to the Warcraft III World Editor i have nothing but praise for the classic team. despite of all the issues we faced at the launch of 1.29 until now and beyond i believe this segment of the game is dealt with genuine care and will continue to be dealt with care. slowly ironing out issues one by one while communicating on a minor and major level with map makers, talking about new possible features.

It is also clear to me that within the Melee side as much as i’m not a regular melee player i do know that they are aware of a lot of their mistakes and the things they need to pay attention. so at the full release of RF and beyond hearing what the team said at the 2019 panel (with a little tricky way of people streaming it) i know that we are headed to a far brighter path in terms of balance.

I really appreciate their effort in trying to strike a balance between both ends of the parties when it comes to the Singleplayer Campaign. admittingly its very difficult to please both sides, and its unfair to cater “too much” to either side. but the hard work in trying to please both sides at the same time is clearly visible. and i think its good :+1:

Chapter 2: So what did they do wrong ?

Nobody is really pleased with Blizzards intentions with the graphics of Warcraft 3 and they are at best neutral, or at worst fighting in a 50/50 battle. this is something Blizzard is souly responsible for and something really bad done to its costumer base.

One camp of people, desire the graphics to be generally in direction to Standard warcraft art, aka Stylish Cartoony. so more in line with the work of Samwise Didier.

One camp of people, welcome the new decision to recreate warcraft 3s art and graphics to be far more realistic with more gritty atmosphere which to their credit is what Blizzard first promised to do. even though i’m personally heavily agaisn’t this decision for example.

Here’s the thing though, i don’t think Blizzard can nail something in between what these both camps want because Realism and Cartoony are entirely different from eachother. and so far the only thing blizzard did is universally piss off everyone at both camps.

The only general critique i can give to Reforgeds models that even come close to the both camps agreeing with eachother is… MAYBE the fact that the models look very generic.

The Unavoidable:

There are somethings that is too late to be fixed in a month now.
i can point out 2 from my perspective. and leave the rest in the hands of people reading this thread.

The damage done by silence and lack of communication has been severe to the health of the community. it gutted and made too many people go at war in the forums with eachother.

In my point of view, even though i speak highly of the custom games and the support added to map makers. there is one unavoidable truth,
and that is the way Blizzard handled models, from units, to heros, to doodads across the board. while their talk about transitioning custom maps “smoothly” from classic to reforged in terms of technical issues it hasn’t been as bad and there is a genuine hope to eventually fix these issues.

There is no denial that the models of reforged completely reject consistency, and alinement with Classic because of their huge difference in artistic design.

What a map maker has carefully imagined and worked towards achieving visually, may and is completely changed when they port their map over to Reforged. and require a lot of reworking to reapply what they specifically worked towards.

And the fact that the models of Reforged are “too high in quality and details” makes it so the existing work of the community is largely unfitting and off looking in Reforged. and the amount of time spent in creating the daily dose of content we receive from places like The Hive Workshop, compared to creating models that are of the same quality and detail as Reforged are 10 times harder, and longer.

Blizzard is essentially forcing a lot of map makers on mass to Force down SD graphics for their maps. not that its a bad thing. the fact that the option was added is commendable. but a map maker in this new age for the community will either have to start working on their map on Reforged, and limiting themselves to only content from inside the game. or work on their map with Classic in mind only, but have access to nearly unlimited amount of content inputted to the community over 15 years of time.

The fact that Blizzard failed to at the very least acknowledge this issue and get a word or 2 out breaks my heart with all intended levels of seriousness.

WC3 classic was cartonish, but reforged is mega mega cartonish, they said they will go for more realistic vibe but at the end they went back too cartonish which in my option is a mistake, but thats i gueess you need too do too bring new children in the game.
