Some people would say, who cares about twitch. The reality is that there is a circle that goes around content->views->money->pro players->normal players->content->views… It is a fact that whatever is in top 5 of twitch will receive the most attention so players would dedicate most of their time and effort to make content(in yt also) for others this creates a domino-effect attracting even more players.
I believe there was is a generational factor that people hasn’t considered. WC3 did have a lot of players but WC3 was a mature game, in fact, most of RTS are. In-depth strategy which doesn’t appeal to the younger audience. That’s why I believe MOBA became so sucessful, is literally WC3 simplified without macro or in-depth strategy.
Fast forward today, market is saturated with MOBA and any 5 year old understands it, most of the MOBA players don’t even know what WC3 is. I have talked to pro-players they have no idea, haven’t even played an RTS in their entire life. People have already a decade or more playing MOBA and are basically becoming exhausted of the genre. Another fact, a lot of people are exhausted in playing on a team (trolls, afks, flamers) but love MOBA and not FPS so they have no choice. This is where WC3:R comes in.
WC3:R could cater to two complete generations, the older generation that always loved RTS and grew playing RTS and the younger generation that grew playing MOBA, because from MOBA to WC3 is not like leaps in mechanical difference, is very transitionable and very plausible for people from MOBA to adapt. Having a competitive game which doesn’t rely in a team and allows for display of performance in 1v1 (with MOBA mechanics) should easily be able to catch a huge playerbase(millions) if it is implemented properly. Just my 2 cents.
MOBA should only be used to refer to LoL, they came up with the term for that game and because it’s so stupidly vague it should only be used to when talking about LoL… but because LoL is shorter you shouldn’t say MOBA if you’re talking about LoL.
Honestly Mobas are on the downfall. Every community, dota2, lol, hots, are always complaining and talking about how they arnt happy with the current state of the game. It wouldn’t surprise me if the RTS genre would take over the moba community
It is really not crazy at all, there is just no company releasing any RTS at all. Everyone is stuck making MMORPGS and MOBAS. People want esport and there is literally no one catering to a 1v1 esport.
I really hopse so that reverse effect happens and RTS games take over MOBA community again…
The good news for RTS genre is that for example Microsoft decided to revive Age of Empires in big way (remaster all old games and let Relic develope AoE IV) and game like Iron Harvest managed to get its Kickaster money together from fans of RTS genre…and now we got WC3 back…
Anyhow for me it feels like Battle Royale and Hero Arenas are at the same peak of popularity that MOBA games were just few years ago, while MOBA games are slowly but surely loosing their audience.
On the one hand, I despise the fact that a lot of people despise Twitch. I was watching my dad play games all the time as a kid. But on the other hand, I myself fail to understand the appeal of watching DotA-likes on stream. 20 min of last hitting has always been giving me eye cancer. I could only bear the VoDs where I would fast forward through the boring stuff.
I can stand HotS, however, but it’s far closer to WC3 in the duration of its matches.
As to your argument about the revival of RTS, hasn’t it failed to happen with SC2 going free-to-play? And with SC:R (which was a huge success in itself, but not genre-wide)?
I mean really? it is quite obvious that SC2 is not a quite comparison to LoL, for example like it is from WC3 to LoL. For the obvious reasons ,first, the fantasy setting is more relatable to MOBAs. Second, there is a ‘hero’ that ‘jungles’ and purchases items. I could keep going but I feel that I have said enough.
Wow you’re beyond clueless man. I’m obviously saying that “Multiplayer Online Battle Arena” can be applied to just about any game with multiplayer that’s playable online… Just stop embarrassing yourself…
That’s hilarious because when I was 12 you were most likely not even born (you’re like 10-15ish). I have thousands of hours of DotA and Dota 2 and I don’t ever refer to it as a MOBA because I’m not an idiot like you
This is ridiculously incoherent, but if I understand you correctly, you fail to understand that @MADKAT subscribes the view of DotA fans who view Pendragon as a usurper and a robber whose terms are illegitimate to the legacy of the genre of the DotA-likes. Quite obvious, imHo.
Usurper? Robber? Well, not sure what you mean TBH. Pendragon was the admin/whatever of dota-allstars and Guinsoo was obv the big reason DotA ever got popular. LoL isn’t a copy since Guinsoo was the 2nd main dev on DotA Allstars but I’d never refer to games similar to LoL as a MOBA simply because they marketed their own game as a MOBA…
RTS is on decline for a long time, every new game is MOBA or FPS or adventure FPS (Fortnite, pubg, CS etc) - the point is going shooting stuff around.
So I do not expect it to take over LoL or Dota 2 as everyone likes 1 hero control, since RTS is too hard for the mass players. But if it could reach SC2’s popularity, a game with 7K viewers on average but going top 5 on Blizzcon that would be awesome. Right now war3 is not and obviously because an outdated game does not feel rewarding to bring the attention.
You know it’s funny with all of this talk about MOBAs and how they are so popular… You do know that essentially Warcraft III’s original hero mechanics are directly responsible for the creation of all MOBAs that are currently in existence.
That’s exactly my point, if WC3:R is implemented properly its very plausiable for it to steal a big chunk of the MOBA playerbase since they are so relatable, and it could work as a gateway from MOBA to RTS.
