Classic / Reforged toggle greyed out

To get this out of the way first, the Warcraft III: Reforged status is “active” on my Games & Accounts page in Blizzard account settings, so I assume I own it even though the store page says “Buy Now.” When I launch W3 (not legacy version) and, from the main menu title screen, go to options, the toggle for changing between Classic and Reforged is set to Classic, greyed out, and when I hover over it, it says “This option can’t be changed in-game.”

Nothing I’ve searched seems to work (people suggest reinstalling, changing region, adding/removing the authenticator, deleting directories) so what’s up?

Could it be that you activated Warcraft 3 via your old-school CD-key?

Here’s how you could check:

  1. Open your Battle.net Transaction History page
  2. Look for an explicit purchase entry labelled Warcraft III: Reforged.
  3. If you only see your legacy 26-digit CD key, you may not own the HD upgrade. In that case you likely must click “Buy Now” on the store page to unlock the toggle

I most definitely had the original WC3 and expansion discs so yeah, definitely CD-Key. So I guess it just says “status active” for Reforged whether or not I actually own the HD upgrade? That’s pretty confusing but thanks for the help!

In your account, the active just means that a license is assigned to the account. But there’s more than one license.

If you didn’t buy Reforged itself, you don’t own the “Reforged” mode of the game.
