Can we have unlimited selection now?

As the title says.

It is 2026. It’s time to make some changes.

Since we already have the separate legacy 1.29 version, anyone who doesn’t like the changes can simply play the old version instead.

And please add more hotkeys. For example: select all military units, select all military buildings, select all air units, select all ground units, select all idle military units, etc.

Just bring all the hotkeys from Age of Empires into this game please!

Thank you very much!

No, we can’t have that.

Your logic falls flat. 1.29 can’t be played online. So it is not an option for people who play online but prefer the traditional setup.

The selection cap encourages skilled play. Selecting everything you have and pressing attack move is not skilled play. Beyond that, the UI can not reasonably display all the units on the command card if you select a large number. Everything would have to be way too tiny.

How is constantly pressing 1 → right-click → 2 → right-click → 3 → right-click….. considered “skilled play”?

Even with unlimited unit selection, players would still need tons of precise micro during battles. I never thought it would suddenly remove the skill gap between pro players and casual players like me. But it would definitely make the game more fun to play.

Just keep the old version, or let version 1.29 playable online, so people who prefer the old “skilled play” style still have a place to go. The player base for traditional gameplay and modern gameplay is different anyway.

I honestly haven’t played an RTS game that requires assigning more than two control groups in a very long time.

Yesterday I found out that Warcraft 2.0 added several new QoL improvements, and I think it’s a step in the right direction! I especially love the feature that allows players to zoom out further so we can drag-select units that are far apart more easily. I hope version 3.0 can bring more positive changes!

It encourages you to put units together in their own groups and target different units. It’s also easier to control units with active abilities when all the units in a group are the same (even though subgroups were designed to help with this).

It helps improve skill because it encourages you to do more. And like it or not, even if you’re playing midlessly, you’re doing more if you’re pressing 1 click 2 click 3 than if you’re just pressing 1 followed by right clicking all over the map.

I never liked limited selection in rts games. Starcraft 2 has it unlimited and I like others still use 1, 2, 3 etc groups so CaptainJack’s argument is invalid. Dawn of War games also have it unlimited. It made controlling army just easier.

It would be a QoL change for us casuals and great for campaign mode. Multiplayer pro gamers don’t even make that big armies so would they feel the difference?

The only reason to keep limited selection seems to be in Starcraft 1 because there are some specific cases like Mutalisk army that could break the balance of this old game engine because of how air units stack on each other or something like that. That should be able to be fixed some other way tho.

I always liked it. It promotes better tactics and strategy. But the reality is, most RTS games had limited selection. And even if it wasn’t for any gameplay reason, it generally existed because you could only fit so much information on the UI- or in other words, technical reasons. all the warcraft games have it. SC1 had it. C&C didn’t have it but units in that game never hard active abilities so you didn’t really need the UI to control them at all. But the thing is, those games are very rudiementary interms of tactical and strategic options.

The suggestion highlights the distinction between a remake and a remaster. Reforged is a remaster not a remake and what you’re asking for is a radical gameplay change.

Increased camera distance could be considered the same radical change but it happened already.

yes, would be nice to select everything in like mass RTS like Helms Deep and Lordaeron the Aftermath
