StarCraft II crashing on MacOS 26.5

I recently updated to MacOS 26.5. After this, StarCraft II (both the main game and the Public Test Realm), StarCraft and Heroes of the Storm are crashing when attempting to open them from the launcher. When these apps crash, I am only presented with the OS level crash reporting window.

Adversely, Warcraft III Reforged and Hearthstone are starting up just fine.

What I have tried:

  1. Restarted my laptop
  2. Ensured permissions are “Read & Write” for each of these apps’ executables
  3. Backed up and removed settings folders (they aren’t even re-created upon trying to start the apps)

Any other ideas?

yeah go complain to mac for breaking your game. obviously its the mac update.

I’m sure it is. Definitely not blaming Blizzard, but I am pretty sure they haven’t recompiled any of these games to be compatible with Apple Silicon yet, which means they’ve effectively been emulated via Rosetta 2 for years now. Support for Rosetta 2 is about to end, which I believe is why this is happening.

So, saying this is on Apple doesn’t really make sense. It does feel like Blizzard simply hasn’t compiled the apps for the new architecture, leading on the emulation to make them work for us.

yeah, cause 1, sc2 has no teams working on it, been out of developement since 2020. and 2 new apple using new stuff that doesnt run older blizz games is apples problem.

Interesting, because most people complain about Warcraft 3 Reforged not working while StarCraft 2 is fine.
If you could provide more information, then I hope the developers will address this.

there are no developers. games been out of developement for 6 years now. you have been told this countless times cat.

I have seen updates as recently as this past year though. Are you just saying that it’s in a state of sustainable engineering? So no new actual work, just patches here and there?

2020 ended all developement for the game, we still get balance patchs but rarely. things that you want tho are on developemental side of the game, where as balance patchs are done in editor.

I never said such things, although other games are a higher priority for Blizzard.

Seems they were talking to Winter, the post right above them.

Gotcha. So it seems my crawl to 1000 in co-op has finally come to an end… It’s been fun, Blizzard.

well thats on you for using mac, the obsolete gameing pc system. mac has always been bad for games. buy a real pc and you wont have problems like this.

thats on you for using mac

Riiight, so you’ve had a few digs on Mac in this thread.

mac has always been bad for games

While I appreciate your opinion, I’m the one gaming on the system and it’s been fantastic.

buy a real pc and you wont have problems like this

I don’t want to use a sub-par OS just so I can play games that no longer support my OS—not for performance, but for understandable reasons around architecture support.

So please stop saying that Mac is an inferior gaming platform. It isn’t. But I do understand the difficulty of maintaining support for multiple gaming platforms, and having to deal with the architectural changes Apple has chosen to make on its platform. I do get that frustration fwiw.

But anyone who is still saying Mac isn’t a good gaming platform just sounds uninformed. With respect.

Edit: Now here is a thorough explanation of why development for Mac isn’t as prevalent that you might find interesting.

Just to clarify, I have WinterKnight blocked (Profile => Preferences => Users => Ignore List) so I don’t see their replies directly unless they are quoted. I thought slant675 was responding to me. That may explain some confusion earlier.

You could try clearing the Battle.net cache, doing a full reinstall of SC2/HotS.
Then checking macOS Privacy & Security for any blocked apps after the update.

Since WC3R and Hearthstone still work, it may be a compatibility issue specific to SC2/HotS after the macOS update rather than a general Blizzard issue.

no unfortunatly for you sir, the truth remains mac has always been inferior in the gaming department. and theres about several thousand videos on youtube compairing pc and mac in the gameing aspects to prove such.

Wow. Are there THAT many my Windows fan boys??

lol k

Anyway, please stop hijacking’s this thread just to say Apple is inferior. We hear your opinion.

your thread was already addressed. if you dont like the truth then you can look elsewhere to find some one to tell you different. the fact still remains that mac os broke your game on update.

and again its not my opinion that windows is better for gaming, its just fact. now mac is better for production, and that is fact also. macs beat windows in other aspect, but not gaming.
