I too am unhappy about Settman as a commander but mostly because of Set lag.
yes mechanized zerg is a great thing but one of those great things but you don’t expect someone to bother doing just a crazy. I was with the simulant program that they went from training robot to a functional hive … because amazing but impractical . all this technology would benefit the terran soldiers or create a more practical self-defense force and end the terran combat
@Subsourian Very cool! The Diablo story even then was pretty cheesy, but a lot darker and I quite enjoyed it. The cinematics in Diablo II were fantastic!
I also miss detailed story manuals.
@Skehan Agreed. I personally feel he’s far, far too vilified.
Much like George Lucas, I think he really needed somebody to draw the line for when he was going too far. Stuff like Kerrigan becoming a Xel’naga is pretty obviously a legacy of his that probably shouldn’t have been included because seriously. But when he peaked, he was pretty darn good, giving us things like Tassadar’s speeches and Medivh in Warcraft 3 being tired and anxious with everybody the whole game.
He’s villified because at every BlizzCon he acts like he’s on vacation, forgets random important details about his games and retcons everything. Tell the red shirt guy that Metzen cares about his games.
I don’t hate him. Met him in real life, he’s a nice guy. He’s not even a terrible writer (well he’s better than me). I just think he should have let more talented writers step into the fold. Like Tricky said, he was originally in art, not storyboarding. His position was just handed to him because he happened to be there in the early days.
I think expecting somebody to put in as much work into a story as Tolkien did is entirely unreasonable. LOTR and the Silmarillion were literally his life’s works (which he didn’t even get to finish), and Metzen was juggling three or more universes worth of lore, much of which he was not directly involved with creating the details of. Is it any surprise he doesn’t know the entire extent of the lore off hand?
People like you and me do it for free. It’s literally his job.
Imagine getting paid huge amounts of money to work on video games and then not take it seriously.
People like you and me have hours to pour over the wiki looking for random details which we consider to largely be equally relevant (with a few exceptions). Metzen has to do actual work, to say nothing of the fact that writing the story is not the only thing he did at Blizzard.
Fixed that for you.
StarCraft at the time had like two games, a manual and a couple novels. Wow. What mind-boggling amount of information to process. You must need a supercomputer for that.
Are you referring to WoL? Because the only retcons for that are to Raynor’s backstory, in as much as they gave him one beyond “was a marshal on Mar Sara.”
I mean…
HotS ended with Raynor saving Kerrigan.
LotV featured Artanis flying to Ulnar and saving Kerrigan while he’s there
LotV epilogue featured Raynor protecting Kerrigan.
Honestly her strength was a lot more impressive in BW as well.
Mostly because even though she beats incredibly powerful villain, that villain is so freaking inept, his power doesn’t even make him that scary.
Even her killing him was pretty big plot convenience. Because we for some reason couldn’t use the Spear of Adun past the first map, and we couldn’t have just set up a laser drill on the last map, heck once we killed the magic crystals we could have just nuked Amon to death. But, lucky for Kerrigan, she was the only one who could break the plot armour.
Honestly, Kerrigan’s only REAL moment of glory was when she successfully 1v1ed Narud. With a worm helping. But still, beating Narud was pretty good at least.
Yeah, Amon didn’t really feel like a threat since he never really overwhelmed you in any significant way
Well… he did once. Right off the bat on Aiur.
And on Shakuras, for that matter. And Glacius, though you make out a bit better there.
I mean, given that the Overmind was a force to be reckoned with, you’d kinda expect Amon to be able to craft some powerful Zerg essences or something - maybe more Brutalisks or Leviathans idk
Rather, what we see is that the zerg are relatively small fry during Salvation (which we don’t see on Shakuras, interestingly) and the main threat is the Golden Armada.
You’d kind of think he’d use as many Hybrid as he did on Shakuras, which didn’t happen for some reason
Plus, given the fact that the Hybrid that went on Shakuras came from Aiur, that makes even less sense
I don’t count Shakuras, because that is his biggest defeat in Koprulu until the Second Invasion of Aiur.
Protoss were still overwhelmed on it, it’s more of a pyrrhic victory for Amon than a true defeat.
Fair assesment. 2020
