For four days now I have been blocked from entering the Lobby when I try to play ‘Custom’ ‘Melee’ games. please help
Chain of events:
Summer-December 14th - google is hacked via a Microsoft exploit that was injected back in march 2020. Snooping allowed hackers to retrieve google admin passwords for months.
Friday December 11th - The hackers knew that this is the week that most of the senior staff go on vacation so they begin accessing the gmail servers and downloading all the raw data. Over the weekend of Dec. 11-Dec.14 Petabytes of raw gmail data is stolen and downloaded out. Remember the normal staff are on vacation now and it is a skeleton crew on the SRE team.
Dec. 14 - realizing the emergency, senior google leadership including the CEO have to actually unplug. Yes you heard it - the hack was so bad that google had to unplug the servers. The world experienced this as a massive outage of all of googles services.
What many of you might not realize is that googles email services are used by most tech companies and reputable companies for that matter due to their size and security. Multiple federal govt. agencies use google hosting and email client as well due to the assumed security.
Blizzard is one such company.
Dec. 15 - Federal agencies effected go offline (unplug) and the event is called the largest most sophisticated hack in history.
Dec. 15th - Now - One by one, effected companies that had their emails compromised are notified by google under strict anonymity . You see if you have the emails then you can get the admin passwords for these server farms and services.
Blizzard engineers and admins are also on vacation and there is concern that many of them may have had their emails compromised by their gmail client.
The effected servers are in NA and it was decided to unplug. So many of the servers are currently offline in fact to prevent any data theft or loss as a precaution. Site engineers will return Jan 4th to resolve the issue and for now the limited backup servers are currently handling all of the games in the region.
There is no guarantee that blizzard servers were compromised although it is unlikely since it would be considered a low value target. As a precaution I would recommend not using the same password to log into Blizzard as you do for your email client (and also the main email client as your username).
You would be surprised how many idiots have their main email and password the same as their login credentials for blizzard. Thats the stuff that gets swiped in a hack.
Will provide updates as I hear them but keep in mind that this is a developing situation and the hack is still in progress across multiple companies and agencies right now. Because of the NSA sensitive data and other agencies involved - google is claiming the outage was a errant “0” in some software code as a cover story.
You can make up your mind whether that makes sense or not. I encourage you all to do your own research and see if what you are being fed makes sense!
