If there is one unit I would really like to see return in StarCraft 3, it is the Scourge.
Not simply as a nostalgic callback to Brood War and not necessarily as an exact copy of the old unit. I mean bringing back the idea behind the Scourge as a fundamental part of Zerg design.
The Zerg should have a true biological answer to overwhelming enemy air power, increasing Protoss & Terran armor and firepower.
The Scourge fits the Zerg perfectly: it is cheap, expendable, fast, dangerous, and completely committed to the kill. Instead of building an expensive conventional anti-air fleet, the Zerg can throw living organisms at the enemy’s most valuable aircraft.
That is very different from simply giving Zerg another standard anti-air unit (but of course I would not mind also the coming back of Devourers)
Imagine a Terran player Tactical Jumping a group of BC directly into a Zerg base, or a Protoss player arriving with a huge VR + Carrier army. The Zerg should have the ability to respond with something that says: “You brought expensive aircraft into the Swarm’s base. Now deal with the Swarm’s rage”
My idea is to have an expensive Scourge Nest that launches Scourge at enemy air units. It could only be built near core structures and have a limited range , but enough firepower to help counter large-scale Terran/Protoss air attacks.
The limited range is intentional: I don’t want it to become an offensive tool or lead to another “Cannon Rush” or Swarm host’s type cheese.
Scourge aren’t just another unit they are Zerg DNA.
i think the scourge is cooler than the corruptor and devourer, because corruptor/devourer are “it spits acid” and there’s only so much to do with that template
sc3 faces the impossible question of which units to return and which to bin.
static defense that makes units is something i’ve wanted to see for a very long time. hehe
There is a reason why Scourge didn’t make the jump into StarCraft II.
Scourge are far too difficult to balance. Their mere existence limits how all other air units can be designed. When Scourge are present, all other air combat units either need to be fast enough to kite them, protected by splash damage (Valkyries / Corsairs), or otherwise extremely efficient at dealing with them (SC1 Battlecruiser) in order to be usable.
Air units like Vikings, Void Rays, Corruptors, Carriers, SC2 Battlecruisers, Tempests, etc just aren’t usable in a game with Scourge.
There is no point to bringing Devourers into Starcraft II. Corruptors are better for anti-air in just about every conceivable way.
Apart from bringing scourge back, bringing most units from SC1/SC2 into hypothetical SC3 is bad because you’ll be making a remaster rather than new game. If SC3 ever sees the daylight i would like to see a set of completely new units for all three races rather than copy-pasting existing units.
I read somewhere you should keep at least 50% of old units, otherwise there is not Starcraft anymore.
If you change too much you can call that for example “OGame2” or “StarWars” or other name for the game.
I’d LOVE a SC3. But with all the hype surrounding the SC ‘open world shooter’, I doubt there’s movement toward another RTS.
Across the industry, the genre has been fading in favor of RPGs and shooters. It’s likely why a while back Bliz consolidated down to WoW, OW and Diablo, while leaving SC, WC and Heroes behind.
Seeing no RTS ever really successfully competed with Bliz’s RTSs, realistically only Bliz was making the good ones. Yet, Bliz themselves saw the genre fading even when SC2 was still the flagship. So it started long before the end of good RTSs.
Some of the interviews with people that have seen the preliminary footage of the SC shooter game say it resembles WH. So that could be cool.
My man, I’d like to introduce you to one of the most popular RTS games ever made: Age of Empires 2.
The genre isn’t fading, lol, don’t be dramatic. Modern day game design philosophies rely a lot on live service, monetization schemes, pushing esports and visibility in the form of streamers.
Pretty much all of these things are an anathema to developing a good RTS game and when you shoehorn it in, you end up with highly unpopular flops like Dawn of War 3 or shudders Stormgate…Jesus was Stormgate ever bad lol.
I’ve been hoping for a StarCraft shooter for the longest of times. I hope it’s 1st person or at least has 1st and 3rd person options.
Genre is only fading because of bad decision-making from devs
This is like complaining your car is going too fast because you aren’t taking your foot off the accelerator.
Do you really need me to point out the nuances of English as a language?
You don’t get to create a problem and then say the whole X thing is fading. That’s asinine, silly, obtuse and droll.
I mean do you complain that water is too hot in general because you poured boiling water on your hand?
Do you complain that cars are too fast when you have a led foot?
This is genuinely eye roll worthy lol.
Creating the problem and then throwing your hands up in the air and saying it’s all bad is…I don’t even have words to describe what that is other than silly.
