A proposed mini campaign

Just don’t diss my hard-working boys.

I don’t think that’s an information Haylen, Beckett or even Foster is interested in. It’s local wildlife, I figured we don’t always need to bring in the Zerg, right?

I see. Maybe some more contexts are needed.

  • I imagine this miner to be like that one mission in Co-op that we rescue. They are private citizens on foreign soil. The Dominion, on the other hand, is government officials on duty. So, Ms. H refusal to hack them, but has no qualm hacking the miner.

  • As for their uniform, basically, it’s just that no one would wants to steal them. Not because it’s undesirable or useless, but because it’s their cloth. They just cannot think that someone would steal something so basic. Beside, at the time, Mr. A was in their headquarters already. It’s just easy to grab some attire.

  • When the miners decided to run away from a group of construct, it was smart and practical choice. They were unarm. When a group of ancient guardians barreling down on you and you have little more than pickaxe and hammer, stand your ground isn’t bravery, it’s idiotic. Those people were just trying to stay alive.

  • Lastly, I think this one really lost in the subtext. (A subtext that probably doesn’t exist, my bad) These miners are very generous. The star map is quite useless to them. Those dwarf planet are in Dominion space. Even if they know where it is, it’s still very unlike that they will see much profit from it. As you well know the Auger 12k is a very expensive hardware. Not only they have to pay for it (it was the first thing the construct destroys), they have lost credibility with the Dominion. It will be harder to ask for other equipment now. It would be very easy to extort Mr. A and Mr. P right then for lots of thing, but they didn’t. Even though these people need to mine the temple to feed their family, they do understand our duo desire. Not enough to sway them away, though.

I think this makes the clearer situation a bit more respectful? I want to make thing more realistic. The sad truth is that these people get exploited.

Absolutely, I just want to make sure that is where you’re going. I would love to read it in a more detail. Be warm, though. I’m quite a harsh critic.

Sure, I was kinda joking anyway.

What do you want to hear exactly? Because I only have this much I wrote but always happy to expand on it.

Never! I am one cold sun of a gun.

Well, it’s a valid criticism. I don’t want there to be any villain that we could walk all over without remorse. In the original plan Mr. A and Mr. P we’re going to return the power drill.

Whatever you like to type. This is your story. There is nothing I have particularly in mind, but I am curious about where this story would go.

I have bits of info I’ve been working on for the story so I can give you that.

The planet has a very oxygen rich atmosphere, so nobody is walking around bareface. Part of the reason why the arachnids grew so big and also the result of the great amount of trees on the planet, which makes it a good site for a timber/lumber operation.

The security forces employed by the Foster family wear reinforced, green CMC-400 armors with upgraded sensors, comms and lights. Instead of the standard C-14 rifles they use either high tier shotguns or high tier hunting rifles, specifically engineered for them and resembling the C-14. They use the highest quality premium ammos. Some specialists use flamethrowers and grenade launchers so they don’t have Firebats or Marauders. They do use Goliaths for heavy fire and anti-flyer support as well as armored Hellions to quickly move and purge hostile wildlife. What else do I have?

Nice! A lot of sci-fi forget about oxygen concentration effects on wild life. I guess super big is a thing in your story, right?

Now, there is one thing you need to adjust for. With higher oxygen concentration, fire becomes quite an issue. So you might want to keep all the napalm and such in orbit.

That is true… Need to figure out a way to have some cold fires.

Do you really need fire for your story? Mr. Foster seems to be a resourceful sort. Surely, he has other mean; other cutting edge weaponry…

I guess if I really was writing it I could just mention them incindiary weapons. We could always have some real heavy duty net launchers for example.

How 'bout another one?

Logan ran into the wilderness, licking his wounds after he was fired from his job. The gig was sweet with decent pay and no responsibilities but even a Confederate Marshal has to abide the law, as it turns out. Shietfaced and ready to rumble, Logan plans a bit if payback and he knows exactly where to look.

Charion is the fringest of fringe worlds there is. The population is low, living is cheap, so is a life. The local Confederate militia is made up of local knuckleheads and troublesome soldiers who were sent there as a punishment. And among them are René, a Marine who has been demoted three times, Kyle, a chainsmoking Firebat, Mary, a Marine seeking the adrenaline rush and Brewer, self-styled drug cook and addict, also Marine.

After making contact with the little group Logan reveals his plan. It’s rather simple. The Confederacy had set up a secret base nearby. Back when he was Marshal one of the hard-asses told him not to go around those parts and never to investigate any missing people cases either. The facility is low-profile and lightly guarded by the looks, probably a warehouse. They just have to go in, grab whatever’s inside and go out.

Little do they know, the facility is a laboratory where a strange, buglike animal is being studied…

Finally, the real life spit me out and I’m back haunting this place!

@Brother BartFitz

I’m abit confused about your charector profile. How many female are there?

Now, to continue my story from my last post. After the bargain is strucked our duo is free to resume their mischeive. However, all their misdeed so far has put the temple defensive mechanics on high alert. A group of construct is attacking the Dominion base. The leader of the extraction team (the guys with whom the deal was sign) who happens to be the head of the miner ‘gently’ recuits the duo to help with the defend. Mr. M explained to the duo that the Dominion has been prepared for such assualt. It is normal procedure. Except that due to some meddler, the temple is attacking ahead of schedule. This catches the Dominion unprepared and now they’re about to be overwhelmed. And this is a good place to start the next mission as any, I suppose

  • For this mission, we will need to defend the Dominion base from the defender of the temple. While we can simply lock off all exit point, the construct will now tear down the door if it’s too inconvenient for them to walk pass it. Naturally, the construct will try to preserve its door, but breaking it down is now an option. The Dominion is capable of dealing with the invasion to an extend, but if any of them die during this incident Mr. A would be unable to live with himself and will pull out his forgotten side arm and go berserk which leads straight to a bad ending. So your objective for the whole mission is to regulate the wave of the attacker so that the Dominion can safely handle it. Once the mission is ended. The Dominion feels quite a lot of gratitude toward the Miner. So Mr. A who conveniently left out the fact that he is the whole reason why this happens in the first place asks the Dominion for their telemetry scan. (He hasn’t taken any shower yet, since drilling the door. Plus, it was pretty chaotic at the moment.)

  • At the begining of this mission, Mr. M who is quite curious about how can this duo almost brought an end to the entire mining operation decides to join them for a bit. And so they visit the room behind the door. They found the room lies domant. Mr. P analyze the room while Mr. A study the architecture, their map and the scan result. Once the two discuss their finiding, they found that there is something wrong with the power source. The problem could be as simple as someone turning off the power switch. The trio decide to visit the engine room this is where the Khaydarin Crystal is located. Since they have just cull most of the temple’s guard the trek is pretty safe. Their only obtacle is stalagmite and such, which Mr. M is more than happy to clear out. Once arrive at the engine room, they have found that the room provides energy to the temple quite nicely. it seem that there is something wrong with the conduits that transfer the space magic from the crystal to three substations. And thus begin the second half this mission where we use Mr. M expertise to move around the temple. Due to the mining operation and age, the walkway is quite delicate. The trio needs to make sure that they don’t end up destroying the temple temselves while repair the conduit. During which Mr. A comments that Mr. M seems to be perfectly at ease with Mr. P’s race. Mr. M replies that since the end war he has been encountering a couple of lone Protoss. The Dominion ‘official’ comment is that these invaders need to be arrested and deported. However, the actual policy is just leave them alone as long as they’re peaceful. Valerian knows full well that these protoss are not here on a reconnaissance mission; there is no need to throwing any tantrum. Mr. M ask nack why they’re together which he gets a brief summary. Mr. A also asks about why Mr. M cares little for this temple to which he replied simply that the price for the Khaydarin Crystal is obsencely. His crew and he need to feed their respective family, but he is now abit curious about what the temple does. That’s why he postporne the extraction of the Crystal. (And also, because he is a softy.)

Once the power is restored, Mr. P learned that the Xel’Naga use this temple to survey the nearby fauna and foliage. That is why the place is somewhat hidden below ground; it won’t disturbed the local wild life. The star map was there to help them keep track of the surrounding area. (They’re Xel’Naga. Their definition of surrounding is a bit different.) Since the power is cut off, though, there isn’t much useful information about the wildlife store. Most of the reccord is about extinct species. The data are interesting, but with little monetary value like a game with loot box or micro-tranaction of any kind. Mr. A wants to show their discovery with high-Dominion official. He believe that once they know about all these finding, they will reserve the site. Mr. M agree to help dismount Xel’Naga artifact. He will also provide some information about the lay out of the Dominion base. In exchange, Mr. P musts help him retrieve the Crystal while Mr. A will map out the best extracting route. Mr. M will not assist them any furthur, though. The Dominion is there to stop any kind of smuggling, after all. He won’t jeopardize his mining permit. Ms. H also states that she will help them open one entry into the Dominion base. After which they’re on their own. She won’t risk antagonize the Dominon.

  • Final mission. This mission is divide into three parts. The first part the duo sneaks around in the Dominion base trying to find something about a ship that can take them off world with the Xel’Naga artifact. With Ms. H open the outer barrier for the duo as her last favor, they must slowly find their way into the Headquarter. Luckily, the Dominion still in quite a disarray from the temple scurity. Death toll might be zero, but they had to evacuate in a hurry. Plus, their soilder needed to rest after repelling the construct. (The duo stamina is quite legendary.) Hence, infiltration is a possibility. Once enter, they find a ledger which shows them that some of the material is being sent directly to the Dominion research facility. They also find a warehouse nearby where the Dominion keeps wagon that they use to ship those material. Mr. P cautions that these wagon might be tracked; to which Mr. A assures him that due to the hectic nature of mining, the dominion can’t keep track of all the cargo at all time, they just need to make sure that no truck move outside the premise. This works with their goal just fine. For the second part, the duo move to the warehouse and begin a very long escort mission. They get to the warehouse easily enough. However, one of them needs to move the cart whilst the other clear the way, help shifting guard around or provide distraction. Evetually, they arrive at the entrance to the temple. Since the Khaydarin Crystal was removed and the Dominion busy escorting it (Using route according to Mr. A advice), the temple can’t produce any more construct and their rouute is clear of any Terran. It’s an easy sailing from there until they try to sneak into the starport. The third part begins with Mr. P decides that he will come with Mr. A to the Dominion core world. From what Mr. M told them, Mr. P is sure that he won’t face much punishment. He is quite invested in this endure now that he wants to see it through to the end. Mr. A says that they will need to steal some environmental suit to help disguise Mr. P. It won’t be a good one, but they just need it to work until they arrive at the research world. (Mr. P cannot stay in cloak the world flight) With that discussion out of the way, they proceed to escort the artefact onto the ship, where they just need to avoid the custom. For that purpose, the wagon needs to be hide in the environment from time to time. The Dominion is there to make sure that the Miner didn’t rip them off and not the other way around. So, getting an extra cargo in is feasible. The mission ends as soon as they get the wagon in queue to be loaded into the spaceship.

Once the duo push their artefact up the ramp into the cargo bay, they run into a problem. Their good is not part of the ship masnifest. Hence, they have to find a secluded room to secure their shipment. Panicing once they realize that the whole ship is being filledto the brim. Mr. A about to pull out his side arm and solving his life problem with the bullet when a stunning Ms. S appears! She asks them whether those wagon carries the ‘special’ stuff requested by the general. And why haven’t they taken it to that private cargo hold yet. The two confuse for a bit; realizing that she didn’t recognize Mr. P as a Protoss; they decide to play along and follow Ms. S. Together, they lock up the gig. Ms. S then told them that the ship will depart soon and that they should sit at the chair nearby as to not draw any attention from general crew. And so just like that, the duo take the seat, put on a safety belt tight and scure. The ship engines fire up and they depart. Ms. S then casually sit across from them; bring out her gun; point it at Mr. P and ask simply ‘Why are you trying to smuggle Xel’Naga’s artifact to the Dominion core world?’. She explains that she is a Scurity for the Dominion. She followed them ever since they broke into the base and try to capture them and all their accomplices. She is so surprised that they are trying to export valuable into the core world instead of away. Mr. A tries to get up, only to realize that he can’t. The safety belt acts as a restrain and now they’re traapped. As such, they have no chioce but to spend the rest of their trip spilling their gut. Amused by their story, Ms. S tells them that she will help present their finding to her superior once their arrive at the destination. Turn out that before the mining premit was handed out, an official archeologist have already come to asset the temple. The temple is rare, but it’s just a blue, not orange; it’s not even purple!

And I think this is a good place to end my story. Due to the nature of the last mission, the story ends in a good ending even if they fail any section and get caught. It just unfolds a bit differently, but the Dominion official in charge (Ms. S) is not a corrupted, greedy Activition. The only reason to try and finish it is your sense of pride and accomplishment.

None but one. I got a question on me own. How do these Xel’Naga constructs look?

The little ball of laser eye that Avatar of Purity summons for most of them. I think the one that broke the Auger 12k is a mid way between the general construct and the Avatar.

Anyway, I’m a big fan of the death of the Author. My work is finished, interpret it however you please. As long as it doesn’t in direct conflict with my word, anything goes.

@BartFitz

Do you think my ending is too open ended? Should I tie it up a bit? I was too preoccupied to think properly at the time.

I’m still thinking. I’ll come back to you once I re-read the entire thing in one sit to know how I feel about it.

I actually like it, now that I read through it. It’s a nice, round story.

There were many words that could describe Overseer Hansen, inefficient was not among them. When the Board sent him to Cal’lin Minor to extract Terrazine he couldn’t be less happy about it - he believed this mission wouldn’t move him up on the ladder. But this simple, boring mining operation may not be as simple and boring as it seemed at first.

  • Control a motley group of Kel-Morian units to defend your base, explore new sources of income, quell miner unrests and crush your enemies.
  • Protect the Terrazine Refinery from a Tal’darim expedition sent there to retrieve it and learn more about their technology.
  • Move the Terrazine and other goods to the nearby starport but be careful because a group of Spectres seem to be interested in your cargo.

Honestly, while writing out a theoretical campaign is something of an interesting thought exercise, i’d be much more interested in writing out a fully fleshed out short story or something similar. Skip the handwaving of things to properly build out and show characters and events.

Too much work for 3 people to read. I have time to think out an easy enough 3-4 mission campaign or a plot but not enough time to write out a story.

How could Terrazine extracting mission boring? There is always a chance of running into both Tal’darim and Spectre.

@Emperor Probius, the ruler of Probe

Are you interested in joining in? I would love to read your short story.
