Going Leeroy Jenkins on the balance is how you lose a playerbase. And it’s likely expensive to push out a bunch of updates for PC, both consoles, and Switch at the same time.
I’m unsure what you’re even arguing.

When both of those metas came about purely due to Blizz balancing at a glacial pace.

So go back to the goats style balancing to…stop goats or something similar happening again?
You’ll need to help me out here.
The metas stuck around because Blizzard balanced slowly. But they weren’t careful with making Brig and Sigma, which is why those two happened to start with. And they tried to buff things to break up GOATS, but that didn’t work either because GOATS was just too strong. They literally needed to nuke it with a new game format to end GOATS. Faster balancing wouldn’t have helped, only created mini-metas as whoever got yeeted to god tier this week gets pushed into whatever role they remotely resemble.
Got it.
The thing is if something such as brig 1.0 happens Blizz can just nerf them quickly too. We’re talking about a company worth billions. There isn’t a reason for blatantly op or up heroes to take so long to fix.
Red tape. And a good bit of “is this OP, or annoying?”.
When something’s so far out such as post rework mercy, brig 1.0, release sigma etc it’s obvious to everyone in the game that they’re op and not just annoying. Yet they all took months or years to fix.
You really shouldn’t be giving Blizz a free pass on this. It’s their job to know about and fix this kind of thing.
Them not doing it effectively is not an excuse to make the game boring. This is a game the whole point is for it to be fun.
People were complaining their heads off about Doomfist during double barriers. He gets a slight nerf, still has the one-shot combo, but is gone because other heroes are more viable now that there aren’t so many barriers.
They needed time to figure out if it wasn’t the same thing here (some other factor making a hero seem OP), then make a solution that isn’t just “reduce all the numbers and hope it works”, test it and maybe go back to figure out a different one, then actually roll it out across all the platforms.
Honestly when we’re talking about meta stagnation all this talk about being careful loses meaning.
If something’s been meta for too long just nerf it and be done with it. Taking so long is the root cause of the stagnation.
At least that way people can still play their heroes instead of everything being controlled.
No, hero pools prevent the meta from becoming stagnant, and only prevents people from one tricking for one week. It’s not that big a deal. -_-
I refer you back to…
This is how you break the game. Double barriers giving you trouble? Nerf the meta. But oh wait, Sym and DF were both mediocre at best and only enabled by OP Orisa-Sigma. Now they’re dumpstered so hard that Bastion is back in the meta somehow. And Rein right now is only meta because of synergies and nerfs. Orisa-Sigma got dumpstered, which leaves dive. McCree and Mei both go well with Rein and counter dive, so that’s out. Just nerf the whole meta? Dive destroys everything because the main CC DPS just got dumpstered from a slightly-above-average position.
They need to analyze the meta and understand why it’s happening before nerfing anything, instead of just playing half-blind whac-a-mole.
We’ll agree to disagree we’re going around in circles now.
Like every single bad decision in Overwatch, it all comes back to the balancing team as usual. Quite possibly the worst balancing for a major shooter I’ve seen in a long, long time.
EA’s Battlefront 2 managed to somehow pull itself around with less money and less of a team, and they did it in a year. Overwatch is almost 4 and it still hasn’t managed to actually balance the roster and can’t make one balance patch without screwing something up.
Exactly. Hero bans just attempt to sidestep the issue of balancing altogether.
I have instant queues and the the game has never been more interesting.
I’d like to introduce you to today’s balance patch. Today’s patch. They have been balancing more frequently. If hero pools aren’t for you, maybe go try one of the other Overwatch-like games that have PLAYER selected hero bans. Surely that would be better, adding to the already long-ish queue times for DPS.

Large chunks of the player base quitting the game is definitely good long term. Wait…
At least reach level 100, or not post on an alt account.
You definitely defeated my entire argument and didn’t just try to invalidate me. Definitely.
