I direct your attention to the likes of Stray and Cult of the Lamb. Very similar Metacritic score, but the user score was 8.6 and 7.9 respectively. These people actually reviewed the game for its merits, and weren’t bogged down by horrible monetisation practices, badly optimised servers and near-pointless security measures.
What these reviewers do is try their best to avoid any sort of criticism to the monetary workings of these games so they don’t highlight issues that turn away sensible players who don’t spend money at every corner.
I direct your attention to above again. Yes whilst a bunch of them on some of these games are venting, Metacritic recently started to crack down on bots after Call of Duty Vanguard got botted to Kingdom come. So whilst a bunch of them are venting frustration at the fact they can’t access the game, they are genuine.
Just happens to be the case that Blizzard and Activision decided to kick the hornet’s nest that is the Overwatch community. They thought we’d be like the COD community who accept horse heap on a plate if it’s served to them in a loot box.
These reviews tend to pop up on Google algorithms and searches. If a game is highly rated, the algorithm will alter to show the games with the best reviews first. It’s all about manipulating websites to get OW2 higher up on the advertising lists.
