I’d also like to add, people aren’t quitting because of Widowmaker alone. Most people quit this game because of the toxic community.

I litterally said this was a theory and to take it with a grain of salt. I know that there is little to no data to prove of disprove this. That is why its a Theory.
Correct, people will complain about every meta because the community is not a hive mind with the same opinion.
However just people people will always complain doesnt make those complaints invalid. They are still complaints and should be taken under advisement.

because “good” widows are sus and using cheat programs. Like many streamers do.
Every paid cheat has option to hide UI while streaming.

p sure Soldier is more popular for cheaters than Widow, because if a Widow’s too good, everyone assumes cheats. if a Soldier is too good, everyone assumes they’re just good unless the behaviours are blatantly obvious (tracking through walls, snapping, etc.).

But if anybody looks back at the replay, that’s really obvious.
the important question to ask when it comes to counterplay is:

Is it reasonable thing a lone player can achieve. say being able to shoot reaper from a distance, it only takes one player to do that and depending on the character it’s quite effective

Is it something that all roles can do. pretty self explanatory

how specifc is the counterplay. if only 1 or 2 characters across the whole roster has the answer while the rest of the roster are helpless then that’s a problem because well what if you uave someone who doesn’t play them. we can see this problem with Anti healing being far and away the best counter to mauga or hog. but Only Ana has it.

Is the counterplay fun. this is the most important part by far, doesn’t matter how if you have 10 different ways of dealing with something if they are all boring and unfun
now problem with widow is that she fails at
1,2, and 4 especially
a lone person can’t kill a widow because if you solo flank or dive you’re gonna more likely then not end up 1v3ing depending on the skill lvl of the match. and sure you can mirror but that just doubled the issue
and she fails at 2 because really only a dive tank can do it, every other role is too squishy to be able to kill a widow before they die unless multiple people dive her at once which ends up ruining rule Number 1
and ofc number 4 is the biggest it’s either your whole team swaps off characters they like just to bully one enemy. or you have to play this game like a tactical shooter, and I’m not playing those games rn for a reason.

Also while I have little proof supporting my claim you also have little proof refuting my claim.
Could widow be the cause for the larger then average drop in players? Maybe

But considering that a few people here said that widow is one of the reason for why they arnt playing, my theory does hold some water.
People don’t want to always play the same heroes, though. Just to shut down one hero on the opposing team.
It was bad enough with old sombra who was the super hard counter, at least then generally people would eventually decide to switch off her. Now they just continue anyway because generally they can get enough value to do so. So you never get to play who you actually want to. So, per the title of the thread, people stop playing.

All you did was list metas, you did not show that player counts didnt match or contradicted player sentiment.
Also we can assume that metas like double shield did negatively impact the player base. Which matched the peoples sentiment of not liking double shields and the player base decreased.
While we lack player counts from back then, since it wasnt on steam at that time. We do have hundrends if not thousands of post from people who “claim” to have stopped playing due to the problematic metas of the past.

Widow doesn’t make people stop playing, we stop playing because the game is stale. No new heroes to play with, comp has no purpose etc.

I hate widow as much as the next guy but I can’t definitively say the drop in players is due to this. This is also a season with no new hero. If widow gets no changes the entire season then we can compare next season player count to the last one with a new hero.
That said for me personally, I’m playing the game far less because of widow. This was the first season I never bought the BP and I likely won’t finish it either.

I think people are leaving because they’re just tired of it. They’re tired of how awful it feels to play, they’re tired of Blizzard. They’re just tired. So they’re leaving to play other games.
