Sombra.
She literally, literally, always comes out when Widow is being played, and you cannot do anything about her unless you are cracked out of your absolute mind on Widow.
Sombra will win the 1v1 every single time and melt you down to zero before you can do jack. You have exactly one chance to whip your aim and hit her in the head and if you miss you’re dead.
I’m not saying Widow shouldn’t have counters but does anyone else think this is just… kinda unfair? I know Widow is crazy and can rule a whole game if she’s not contested, but this isn’t even a contest, it just becomes “bully the Widow” when Sombra comes out.
They’ll swap to Sombra even if you suck, sometimes turning around to make the swap when you’re 0-1.
I mean this is a big part of Widowmaker’s issue. She has the highest kill potential out of any hero. The ability to land death after ~1sec time to charge up to like 40m or something like that.
Her entire design is not well situated for having a variety of skill sets in a single character. If you aren’t great at aiming as Hanzo, you can still make some useful plays on your team with smart dragon usage, storm arrow the right abilities/tanks, then giving sight with occasional chip damage on bodyshots.
Widowmaker doesn’t have that easy mixed skill set. She’s all mechanical skill and next to nothing else for a team. Personally, I find that bad design.
Yeah, that’s the problem with her. She’s the only character where you can overcome almost any obstacle just by having better aim.
Even the solution to Sombra v Widow is just “be better at aiming”. That’s it.
She’s extremely one dimensional and I also think it’s bad design.
But for just one character to completely control another, with the only solution being “be EXTREMELY good at aiming, like OWL good” is dumb.
there are some characters that would’ve been better off the game never having… widow and sombra are two of them. invisible hacking and instant oneshot from across the map is a cancer to this game that blizz just doesn’t have the guts to fix. and the fix is removing them from the game
It’s doable. If you do get that shot once, you might have her shift targets and leave you alone, which makes her an easier target for you. If you just can’t make that happen, then you need to position in a way that you can slingshot your buttocks somewhere better momentarily and get a shot, or to your team, or you just play with your team. It won’t work with every comp or every set of players, but in the moment those are your best options until you get a chance to swap again. I play against her in unranked every chance I get for a bit, I hold my own, but I hate just trading so I usually swap in the last few minutes.
Yeah on one hand widow can dominate top500 lobbies and no one can do anything to stop her. On the other she is completely useless if you’re not cracked because other heroes just provide more consistent value and don’t require you to play very far back (which on non sniper maps can be a big disadvantage). It’s not good design but at the same time clicking heads is so satisfying
It’s more like Widow has unfair design, because most heroes can’t do anything against her, besides wiggle around, or hide behind a wall/barrier the entire game.
So if she’s got a counter that isn’t “Snipe the Snipers with more Snipers”, then it better be really strong.
i play her regardless but yea ive been switching off more than i ever have with this current overwatch. the skill floor got a bit higher with all the mega dive running around. still i find it a challenge sometimes lol… but yea i rather switch off than die 12 times to sombra or 10 to other divers that are numerous nowadays and stronger
No she doesnt. Shes balanced around being hard countered by 1 billion different things. As well as requiring a fully charged HS to get the kill. Yall see a one shot and think thats cheesy but in reality, if you ignore any hero, their gonna stomp the hell out of you.
So stop ignoring widows existence and play like shes always watching, the exact same thing you do when you know a Sombra is around
Yeah, i dont care what your experience is as the widow player, all i care about is the outcome - if you leave a widow alone, she’ll free fire 1 shots at your team from across the map. That IS cheesy. Widow forces counterpicks by EXISTING.
I do play like widow’s always watching - that playstyle is stressful and very unfun.
Weird, you know what other heros force counterpicks? Every hero in the game if the player using them is good enough. No one is gonna counterpick a bad widow unless their being petty.
On top of that. The amazing thing is, you dont even need to counter pick a Widow. You could play outside of her line of sights to get to her with any hero in the game. She could only control long routes of maps so take flanks and off angles. Theres no hero in the game easier to counter then she is
Which hero cant do anything about her? Can you dominate the lobby with her? Can you win against regular flankers like Genji, Tracer or other hitscans?
We both know Widow is only unfair in the hand of superior players. Even when her HP got nerfed Bliz couldnt bring itself to say: We nerf her because she overperformed. No, they unfairly nerfed her because they couldnt nerf skills.
The problem is that Widow breaks counterplay rules. You can’t counteract a headshot. There is no “Choice”, on how to react to it.
Every other Sniper in every other modern PVP shooter, has an extra layer of counterplay available to every player in the game. To compensate for that design problem.
But sure, how does Soldier 76 do anything to a Widow at longer ranges, besides wiggle around, and hide behind walls?
