And this is the best thing for this game to survive, remove the core playerbase.
Don’t need to become battle royale, but a more dinamic game, Blizzard itself talked of changes they was testing or want to testing to make the game less about barriers and more about pushing/damage.
Changes like this can be enough for a new playerbase to born.
And with a new playerbase can born a new and probably better competitive.
Game must be fun, but for more players so they can get more money.
If a certain playerbase is too low, they or will drop the support to the game or change the game getting rid of the actual playerbase.
For example fps arena choiced to not change gameplay and become a really niche game(personally is a good thing but for other reason), other game like cod and battlefield prefered to change their gameplay to gather more players.
Is a choice of the SH what to do, possible more money or let the game die.
Gonna tell you what. If you seriously think Blizz is going turn this game upside down and throw out the player-base and convert to some BR game, I think you are kidding yourself. I don’t even believe Jeff and company begin to want that kind of game, they want their own niche.
Could they add some mode like it with a different game using the Lore? Sure, I expect they will; OW is an IP, but they won’t ditch the bread and butter anytime soon. I am beginning to think you were one of the people pushing for BR back in the day now.
Not sure why you continue to talk of battle royale.
A more dinamic game doesn’t mean battle royale.
Not sure if you know but there was dinamic fps with gameplay different from battle royale before battle royale come up.
Multiplayer fps have a history of twenty years, surely they not born with overwatch or br.
Developers itself talked of experiments of changing the gameplay to be more dinamic in the AMA, Jeff too talked of want a game less barriers and cc/less moba and and get slightly more fps.
If they will have the occasion of get this experiment live and get more players they will surely do it.
That is fine, I don’t think there is any case for gutting the core audience to achieve that. Most players of OW do not want a typical hoppy-hoppy pew-pew-pew game, there are plenty out there. Nor do I think the devs themselves want to work on such a game. They do indeed recognize a slight more tuning in the “FPS direction” but I think some want Valorant; it won’t happen I assure you.
I am down for a 2-3-2 composition, but they refuse to spend the money for a good enough engine to do it… stupid really.
It’s a proven business model that Blizzard are, frankly, extremely late to the party on for OW.
If you are an existing OW player that loves the game but just wishes it had more content then you should be looking at a F2P conversion exactly one way:
the F2P model will increase revenue
the increase in revenue will provide the board with rationale to support an increase in resources being allocated to the games development
the increase in resources will spur additional development of the game
we will all get more OW content to play, read, watch, etc.
People have reservations about what it will do to smurfing and all that stuff, but here’s the thing: we already have problems that are not being addressed, but if the game goes F2P then suddenly the company has to take an active interest in fixing their product because not doing so will hurt their revamped revenue stream.
Which is a serious enough concern to the point that if it ruins the game, all the above points are moot.
I just watched Freedo’s discussion, and this is how it will most likely break out which I am fine with:
QP: F2P for the kids and smurfs to wallow in
Comp and PVE: Paywalled
I am totally down with this. I am even down a for Free Comp version, as long as we keep real Comp paid. Similar to how we tolerate an OQ comp vs 2-2-2, the real game currently. Battlepasses might actually be the key to stemming the problem as well. I still pine for OW Prime… but we will likely never get it.
