Why voice chat is optional in competitive games

VC normally only makes sense in high enough rank/skill tiers, like Masters and up. In lower ranks it’s mostly just a waste of time and a massive distraction, and I personally almost always mute team chat as soon as I find it to be a waste of attention.

In my opinion people do actually often play worse by focusing to much on pointless communication, both the ones doing the coms and the ones listening to it. Muting makes perfect sense and makes you focus better on what’s actually going on.

VC is mostly just usable for calling out a target to focus, calling out flankers/enemy positions and perhaps calling out enemy ult’s. If VC isn’t used for that, it’s usually better to stay away from it. The only exception in my case would be if there’s a very high rated player (at least close to GM) doing call outs of any type. That can actually be very impactful/useful sometimes in my diamond games, but usually it really needs a player up in the top few percentiles to really have an impact.
