its because the rank system is just a big sorting algorithm designed to sort the playerbase into a bell curve. once you have reached your place on the bell curve there is really no more reason to play the game since it will be nothing but diminishing returns i.e more time and effort required for less and less fun.
the majority of the playerbase by definition will be average, they should have added way more incentives to keep average players playing the game.
You are right overwatch is much more team dependent. Valorant is if you have smokes you are good. Its that simple. A bad team mate in ow is worse than a bad teamate in valorant.
We are simple talking a poor ranked structure and matchmaking. Both overwatch and valorant both incredibly trash at. Although ranked points distribution is better in ow.
There is two reasons I’m not climbing.
-
I’m sat in a chair in my room with no ladders in sight.
-
I don’t play competitive anymore.

Why wouldn’t they? They’re enouraged to, what with the game being on sale every other month or in some Humble Bundles. No one’s buying lootboxes anymore, so the game has to make money somehow.
And not just with sales. The whole system encourages smurfing.
This is exactly it. The matchmaker can’t parse all of the fake accounts.

This post is absolutely the height of ignorance. If you knew how elo system works, none of this should surprise you. Tl;dr: the system awards more points if you aren’t favored for a win and fewer points when you are.
It takes about 10 games for the system to place you and another 10-20 games of comp for a player to reach their natural elo in most cases. smurfing isn’t really nearly as big of a problem than people think. The system adapts to it quite quickly. Console is a different story, of course, because there is no cost associated with creating an account.
So its heavily flawed as i stated and i know exactly how it works. It doesnt make it good or even decent.
And for the record. Valorant tries to force you where it thinks you belong. With the point system i described. Brokeny bad joke.
As for rogue company. Its a effect of climbing. You climb from gold to diamond you start gaining almost nothing and losing a ton. Also poorly designed.
But do continue to pretend im ignorant.
No I’m not climbing because I’m washed up. Haven’t played steadily for like 5 months.
Then again, if smurfs can climb, the only reason others cant is because they arent good enough
The SR diff makes a contribution in terms of speed. If you truly are a mere 500 SR different above other people, then you will almost never be able to carry games because you are not that much more valuable compared to another player. You’ll probably feel lke you are in ELO hell.
If you truly are like 2000 SR above other people you will 100% be able to carry games and you’ll be able to see the difference in that speed rather quickly. The less of a difference in ability the slower a person will ever be able to climb.
Makes ranks kind of meaningless, dontcha think? If your metal can actually mean one of three metals (including the ones above and below it) and any given elo’s match can have a 1000SR’s worth of skill spread.
I don’t think it makes it meaningless. People’s expectations are simply out of whack.
Look at a Star’s Luminosity vs Temperature plot. Each dot on there is a data point and together they reveal a pattern. There is this sloping line (main sequence) that appears. There is an obvious average between luminosity and temperature. However, there is effectively error bars.
At any given temp, there could be a range of luminosities observed. SR for competitive is sort of the same. For any given day a person might on average be a 2300 player, but in reality their standing for all heroes they play, who they face against, certain habits, etc. they might peform like they were 2800 SR or as if 1700 SR.
The mistake is thinking a person is defined by a single number and with enough granularity of 1 SR point. They should really be thinking about it in terms as wide of 100R or maybe like 500 SR.
You see even top level players speaking in similar tones. A person low plat or high diamond. They are references these sort of wide SR ranges. 2500-2750 compared to 2750 to 3000.
