Why the removal of canonical friendly voicelines?

it could be that they are bugged out? maybe still in the files but glitched

kind of like the moira thing when she talks to herself and no mercy around

Oh wow, I never knew that! Glad you pointed that out

Torbjörn!

I WILL AVENGE YOU!

Since he and her are good friends too I don’t see why we have more dialogue between them other than her advising him about his headaches.

The real question is how many times do I have to hear Echo’s one, singular pre-match line before I go crazy

My guess would’ve been for OWL to remove VL clutter but they left in others so
 :man_shrugging:

These two are still in the game files.

Mercy also has a poor opinion of Helix Security.

but not in the game so why is it just sitting out?

As someone above said, death witness voice lines are probably bugged. They haven’t played for a long time.

Genji yelling ‘Angela’ is not a death witness and ive never once heard it in a long long time

There have been plenty of voiceline interactions that have been broken over the years. Heck, some the most notable ones were Pharah / Mercy lines that were inexplicably broken for years and are still not working correctly.

Regarding the Genji / Mercy stuff, a lot of that was met with extremely negative feedback for various reasons. Then after Michael Chu left that particular pairing lost its major (only?) advocate in Blizzard since he was the one shoehorning it into the story and they’ve since dialed back most of the hero relationship stuff in general.

Well it still doesn’t make sense even lore-wise why they removed it. Because they canonically flirt in Havana with each other so there’s no reason to remove their current dialogues in game other than approaching certain fans. I think some of us mercy mains would appreciate if genji yelled out to his babe.

They probably just decided that having your hero shouting pointless lore-related voicelines during combat would get distracting, and probably tiresome.

I’m visually impaired and rely heavily on in-game sound queues (including voice lines) to convey information about what’s going on around me, and I am already extremely annoyed that they haven’t fixed the trigger which causes supports call for help after taking one (1) damage. So if you’re saying you want to make sound queues even more inconsistent by having heroes shout random stuff about their teammates, but only the teammates Micheal Chu cares about, triggered by a varied and inconsistent range of events based on some trivia from Chu’s tumblr Gency fanfiction, that would be very detrimental to gameplay.

You can turn off voice sound for that. Some of us paid for the game to enjoy it. If there is a disability issue i suggest blizzard should make it an option for in-game callouts if it bugs you that much.

EDIT: they spam I NEED HEALING and i heal everyone and it gets very distracting but you don’t see them removing any voice for that or the notification sound. ALSO It’s called immersion. I don’t want some dull multiplayer game they never add depth to it which it originally had with callouts adding my entertainment in the game to make the characters feel alive. But no they just wanted their heroes to have taunts to be the only thing allowed to ‘distract’ you and not the immersion.

Players spamming the “I need healing” button is very different from developers spamming the “have I mentioned today that Mercy is Ganjo’s waifu” button during a match. And you do have the option to squelch players if they’re abusing their voiceline privileges.

Developers don’t always have the means to make every single aspect of the game customizable. Sometimes they just have to pick what they want their game to be–in this case by weighing practical gameplay considerations against storytelling considerations. I’m sorry if they didn’t choose what you wanted, but at the end of the day, most of Overwatch’s players are here to enjoy a first person shooter, not a romance anime.

Besides, Overwatch has plenty of comics, short stories, professionally animated shorts, etc for people who want to be immersed in lore, and hopefully in a year or two there will also be fully-fledged PVE campaigns that will be chocked full of lore-related voicelines.

Players spamming the “I need healing” button is very different from developers spamming the “have I mentioned today that Mercy is Ganjo’s waifu” button during a match. Firstly, yes it is very different. One is more intolerable than the other and some cases both are distracting and in some cases neither is. Secondly, the thing is it does not happen every time, occasionally they have said it back then but not every death. So if it annoys you just once then that is just ridiculous. Every time i would understand but not every time there is a mercy and genji in one match you know?

Sometimes people want to hear it in game. They had it previously and if they really had a big problem with it just like ComradeMercy stated of turning down the voice volume down low. Not all of us have that problem like you, and it should not be taken out of the sandbox if one person was to hate immersive dialogues in games. Not all of us like reading, not our cup of tea, just like how you don’t like the distracting voices.

It’s in the same folder as all the other voice lines triggered by witnessing an ally elimination.
