Why the "Rainbow" icon is problematic and disappointing

A healthy diet of reason and logic. :man_shrugging:

there it is, the source of why this is even a thing. People believe by making something more normal you better speak about it on every plattform and better not stop annoying people with the fact you were born gay. Like wtf you are truely desperate for attention

They only said it becuse ppl asked.

But it is.

Representation normalizes being LGBTQ.
Media has a lot of influence on our behavior.

Why do you think why smoking was so popular (now in decline) some years ago?
Because media portrayed it positively.

The best thing, ofc, would be to make it as early as possible.

Like in kids books in kindergarten.

So much of this. Most homophobic adults probably aren’t going to change their mind because of representation in the video games. The biggest part is making it more normal in kids cartoons/programming/games. The change is already happening. Gen Z may have some issues but homophobia isn’t really one of them. The more visible it is the more tolerant people will be. It won’t be seen as “weird” or “strange”. It’ll just be a normal thing people do.

There is a fine line between making it seem normal and explicitly saying: THIS IS LGBTQ.

90% of the times, I know when someones is gay or lesbian when he tells me. This is like knowing someone is vegan because he talks about it all day and nothing else… y know what I mean?
Thatts why I liked the approach from Blizz a lot with these lgbtq chars because no one knew it until it got revealed. It WASNT the first thing they said about the char. ITS A GOD DAMN VIDEO GAME

I fully agree with you. The earlier especially children learn its completly normal the less stress you have when they get confronted with lgbtq.
HOWEVER, doing it just to depict yourself as something special because you’re speaking out for lgbtq or because you are gay/lesbian/etc… yourself, big nono.

The reason why I’m this mad at people, is because they got literally imo one of the best companies who depict lgbtq even as their chars but still complain because the flag is called rainbow itsead of pride.
This
is
ridiculous

How did anyone here say/imply:

“hey, i am LGBTQ and thus i am better than you”

You didn’t. What is happening is that the desire to exist in social spaces and to be depicted in media is being conflated with a desire for special treatment. This is a rhetorical tactic that has been employed in anti-civil rights discourse since at least the 1950’s.

Honestly, it’s like being considerate is a dirty word now.

I consider myself lucky that I grew up in a multicultural city considered one of the most diverse in the world and have spent most of my professional life traveling around the world.

I find people that are against representation are either:

  • represented in their media and have been their entire lives
  • or do not have a diverse circle of friends (actual friends, not “that Asian gay fella at work you say hello to”)

Being considerate and seeking to understand others outside your world view enriches your life more than gaining internet likes with troll comments like “no one cares lol”

Gay Council, the verdict has been determined by anonymous forum user Benimaru. This is “Enough” by their arbitrary standard. We must now put our heads down and be good little complacent consumers. Wouldn’t want to make anyone uncomfortable

It’s not my own definition. It’s literally what it means. Google “calling someone out meaning” and see for yourself.

Saying its a clown fiesta might be a bit of a low blow. But saying its attention seeking, or is forcing things on people, strictly speaking, isn’t implicit of homophobia at all. Even if they are sweeping assumptions and/or plain wrong.

how is this a lifestyle choice? being gay isn’t a lifestyle choice either, just to get that preemptively out of the way.

no one is asking for the dramatic amount of lgbt content, and a proper icon is more than enough, maybe some splash text talking abt celebrating pride.

there are plenty of other game universes that keep pride as a subtle thing while also handling it better than overwatch (not that it’s a competition; it’s an important distinction to make when trying to understand why the “rainbow” player icon is unsatisfactory).

Haha initially I thought you were mad because it was called rainbow and that you were refusing to acknowledge the icon as LGBTQ as some kind of protest or something.

Turns out that’s not the case.

You can sit on the fence here, was it really quiet when it was pre-announced that we would be getting something LGBT+ related? One can sit here, and argue back/forth all day regarding this - but I don’t think the icon is the last nod that the community will be receiving, and I don’t think an icon is enough to warrant an announcement.

As for the name, uhm? I wasn’t really sure, so I double-checked and the flag is called the Rainbow Pride Flag - does it matter if Rainbow or Pride is used? When the flag is synonymously associated with Pride?

Some ppl will never be satisfied no matter how accommodating you attempt to be.

give them an inch and they complain it wasn’t 6feet.

That’s what I knew was going to happen if they implemented the icon, now they want an lgbt mini event.
