Mod Edit:While this thread was created with great intentions, it’s being derailed with trolling and toxic comments. We are locking this thread down.
I keep seeing these topics/conversations in the forums/internet to why the sexuality, gender identity, and others don’t matter for Overwatch heroes.
And no matter how much you explain it, they just loop it back around with their ideals.
This is why it matters.
Role models for those who need them and a live example of the good it does.
Things like this just make a world of difference. People are too busy arguing PC or opinions to stop and think of the good a character can do just by being something as simple as LGBT, a race, with an illness, etc.
Keep your glass half full
Edit: Ooooook… People completely focused on the wrong things and put a lot of words in my mouth.
Now there is a lot of negativity and I think it is inevitable that this topic gets locked. So much for glass half full…
To be honest I think people of all ages should look for real role models in life, not a fictional character in a video game. I mean let’s be brutally honest, they need someone they can talk to, interact with possibly or at least see progress and direction from rather than the “thought” of a fictional character’s sexual preference.
No disrespect meant, but we need more real bastions of rights and less fictional ones.
I responded to a thread earlier saying that I, as a trans male, would be completely devastated if Overwatch were to add a trans character. Mainly to show that not everyone feels the same way.
I had, over a long period of years, been very vocal in my support of LGBT representation and rights. I was informed last night on this very forum that my support, as a straight white male, was unwelcome. I now stand silent on the matter.
The whole “making a character gay” feels too hamfisted, like they’re doing it for the sake of doing it, and I stand by that with Tracer too, they did it as a PR stunt, I don’t care that Tracer is gay, just how it’s done, you can’t just come out one day and go “oh btw D.va is gay and so is Genji” it’d feel so disconnected that it just feels like it’s done for the sake of doing so.
If you want gay characters then write them right, if you make a character for the sole purpose of being homosexual then that’s all people see them for.
TL;DR doesn’t matter one way or the other, stop trying to shoehorn in things for the sake of having them.
I made one of my OC’s cross-dressing/trans simply because I thought the character was way cooler that way. And I think this is how the… non-standard tastes in characters should be approached in designing their stories. “How does this influence the character’s story?” That should always be the most important question.
No, xhe is not posted to the internet. None of my stuff is. I’m still learning the whole art thing.
P.S. I always figured Tracer was gay simply because of her piercings. They felt reminiscent of Elton John’s to me.
This whole LGBTQ thing became a trend since early 2010’s. It’s no longer about fighting for their rights, it’s about being entitled “I’m gay so look at me”, thanks to Steven Universe and tumblr bullying, I actually came to dislike them.
what you said nailed it on the head. Tracer was a well written character already and her being gay didn’t detract or add to that, it just is, that is what good writing does it make trivial things like this not matter.
Just going ‘hey I’m going to make Roadhog gay just because’ would be horrible, make roadhog a great character without sexuality brought in then if suddenly you see him kiss his boyfriend goodbye before going to escort a limo it’s just a moment and not a ‘defining’ part of who he is. Just like being gay is not a defining part of Tracer’s character.
This is why I am not part of the LGBT community. Its why I dont take it seriously, and why I don’t agree with them, despite being gay myself. This is dumb and cruel. You are allowed to voice your opinion, no matter the topic, much less who you are. You are allowed to support or disagree with the LGBT in LGBT topics even if you are a straight white male.
