Why King's Row Works Unlike Any Other Map

Throne of Anubis is like my new numbani, while that map had issues I used to always win there like atleast 90% of time no idea why.
.now throne of Anubis is like that despite me absolutely hating clash as a mode

I think I have 90% wr there too wish they would give map stats in recent memory only lost one match there while winning all others , even that one i just got my.priroritiea wrong than actually bad match.

I have a very love/hate relationship with Temple of Anubis. When it’s good, it’s great. When it’s bad, it’s because Clash is a stupid game mode.

I hate King’s because it’s a map where the easiest possible thing always gives the most value

Yeah, it’s extremely favorable for hitscan.

I do pretty well there too

King’s Row is my all-time favorite map go-to usually.

It’s not the greatest map, nor the worse, but what it offers is what most other maps don’t in general : you can really pick a ton of things and most of them will work either throughout the map design or by using sheer creativity within its design.

You can play Dive, you can play Poke, you can play Brawl/Rush, it’ll work depending whatever meta season it is. 1 season it’s sniper dominated, the other flex have it better. Sometimes Winston is insane, sometimes the classic Rein is the play.

On other maps, like Gibraltar, Dive is really insane and is usually favored to be played. It’s the same for a bunch of them, but there are significant reason to why OW1 map first designs, to this day, are insanely better than the later ones or OW2 ones even.

King’s Row, Illios, Oasis and Lijiang are usually top pick for maps for a reason afterall.

that was the only unique 2cp map. all the other 2cp maps were so identical it was lame

It’s simple really. It’s the most balanced map with almost every hero being viable.

It turns out balance is fun and imbalance cough Circuit cough is not.

I think the map is strangely attack favored. Its generally a more enjoyable experience to attack on the map than defend. Some stats I have from blizzard on my own data from OW1 days over hundreds of games seems to support this particular map as a huge outlier between attack and defense than any other map between its attack or defense phase.

Though when you have to play both attack and defense in comp it balances out, but its still a pretty heavily skewed map on attack. Many of the maps people dislike are not the maps which are easily attacked, but the maps which feels like you run into stalling forever.

You’re right but I was referring to hero balance and not attack vs defence.

Yeah King s Row is one of the best.

  • it can be played by every hero and every strategy
  • Difference between KR and Numbani or Dorado or JT is that defender team has to move also when atacker team proceeds a bit closer. Take a look on Dorado or Numbani - Defender has permanently highground without any effort, and when they are in danger, they just move little bit to the side and still able to shoot. Now comparo to Kings Row - if somebody stay on the top right, and atackers came in, he must leave that area, so he is nit shooting 2-3 sec. Than he has to move to the window ahead or far left - again he loosing 5-6 seconds by walking, that means 5vs4 again etc etc.
  • Ceilings are high
  • Fights are not too dense
  • Not too narrow pathways
  • Not too many obstacles or unnecesary garbage on map
  • Good flanking areas - for both teams!
  • Etc etc

curious as to what people who don’t have king’s row as their #1 think the greatest map is

No, its not only wrong, but also out of any context. OW1 players feel that way, because they have been conditioned to think this. In the world of 6v6, it worked much better than in 5v5 and had great pacing to it. The main counterpoint of this map is still that its quite a sniper map, has no defender spawn for the defenders (second point) and is quite open for hitscan players on first point, flankers and projectile on second point and everyone on third point. Its a nightmare for tanks now, because its a wet DPS dream to play with any hero on it, while suffering with any hero on tank (my experience).

I dont mind Kings Row, but I have never liked it or thought that it was “the best map”. That a spawn is missing is BS and I would rather play on new Numbani or Eichenwalde than on Kings Row.

Lijiang tower or Ilios

I’d have to say a lot of brain power was put into King’s Row.

Now, would I say it is perfect? No. But it does open up options for a team to win, if the team works together.

The last point of the map which is the final stop for the payload does have a few small issues. If the room was slightly changed it would balance out. but only just one small change would be required and that is the window that can only be reached by upward mobility heroes.

If they made that area where the attacking team could drop down and begin to attack, without having to be an upward mobility hero. That would turn the engagement to a better shift. Since essentially right now. If the defenders are strong. The defense can be held almost the entire time.

They like big boops and they can not lie…

King’s Row remains my favorite map to play doe.

What the map is in question and what it offers is what remains the best experience to me.

But, Temple or Anubis, even with its flaws, is my crown jewel as a rat main.
