Why I Have Yet to Not Despise Mercy's Current State (Part 1)

Now? I can do that.

Sure. What time on Labor Day (time zone included)?

How can it be a hitscan attack if it’s a projectile?

So, to clarify, is there travel time in the ability - from leaving Mercy’s hand to hitting the target, or not?

If there is, there just isn’t a need to use the term hitscan at all (Imagine calling Zenyatta’s primary fire a hitscan attack, haha).

If there is not, I think that using the term “projectile visual effect” is better - for example:

The projectile is blocked by barriers, Defense Matrix, and Particle Barriers. It can be deflected by Genji’s Deflect ability.

Would be better written as:

The projectile visual effect is blocked by barriers, Defense Matrix, and Particle Barriers. It can be deflected by Genji’s Deflect ability.

Or even just:

The attack is blocked by barriers, Defense Matrix, and Particle Barriers. It can be deflected by Genji’s Deflect ability.

Perhaps I’m just being a silly sausage, so if I am let me know, but it seems a bit confusing to use two contrasting terms.

Also, if it’s meant to serve the role of Mercy’s very own ‘skill shot’ ability - raising her utility and skill floor/ceiling - having it be hitscan sort of… removes the skill shot part? If you can just aim your cross hair in the right place at the right time it will hit regardless. I understand that this is meant to be mechanically forgiving as Mercy is an easy hero, but in terms of counter-play for such a unique ability it seems a little bit unfair? The majority of strong attacks in the game are projectile based allowing for counter play - for example: Sleep Dart, D.Va’s Missiles, Firestrike, Zarya’s Secondary Fire, Concussion Mine, Flashbang, Mei’s Secondary Fire, and Helix Rockets.

Having it be a true projectile with travel time would - in my opinion - add a layer of complexity to Mercy that raises her skill ceiling more than a simple hitscan attack. I also believe it would be much more rewarding to land, too, and would create a very clear difference between a lower skilled Mercy player and a higher skilled Mercy player. The larger hit box compensates for the need to be mechanically forgiving. I also think it would be more fun for both the receiving target and the Mercy player themselves. Like Sleep Dart, hitting a clutch shot is very fun for the Ana player, but also dodging a Sleep Dart is fun for the target, as well. I believe this would translate over to the Pacify ability as well.

i would like it if you could rez instantly but the rezed person is at very low hp and can’t be healed for 1 second unfortunately this would keep rez as a ability but would require more coordination with the team to make it work sound good? it might bring zarya into the meta more as well because of bubble

i feel like people wouldn’t like pacify because it decreases their damage like how cc abilities hinder speed maybe it should be a burst heal with the same hitscan property to give Mercy a skill shot

I’m on team Titanium, sorry Dr.Clan. D:

Titanium putting the bet in the op is chill and all, but could you put it in a drop-down menu or something? It takes up a lot of space… (Yes I know I’m neurotic about documents looking pretty)

Remember when “Mei is the Devil” and “Mei is killing OW”? its the same with Mercy but with the difference Mei was throwed to the garbage bin for nearly 8 seasons (her pick rate is raising a little due to the small buffs and CC against Hammond). while mercy still being relevant for nearly all the seasons, yet with the nerfs after nerfs. so the toxic community found their perfect punching bag to blame for everything . the Forum is a dang Pit of Toxic Waste to see real feedback.

Is this posted on overwatch reddit at all?
They are more likely to see feedback on there and this is too good to miss the opportunity of them not seeing it because they don’t like to come to their precious forums.

yeah you are right Devs take in account more Reddit instead of the forums, they barely answer back here despite some posts like the Bastion’s one having so high rating.

There is no travel time.

Understandable.

It being a skillshot (going by the definition of “skillshot” that requires a travel time) isn’t necessarily important to the ability. What is important is to the ability is that:

  • It provides Mercy with a secondary midfight ability that can be used on a regular basis.
  • It grants Mercy the ability to rapidly change the tides of a fight outside of Resurrect.
  • It does not violate Mercy’s low skill floor due to its forgiving hitbox and impact curve at different ranks; a 33% damage reduction becomes more potent the higher a player climbs. As a result, failing to land the ability at low ranks is still fairly forgiving.
  • It raises Mercy’s skill ceiling by adding more timing to her kit and a little more mechanical skill. Not only that, but it makes some of the skills developed by playing Mercy more transferable, as the player is prompted to develop aiming skills more often than the occasional draw-your-pistol-and-do-some-of-the-dirty-work-yourself moment.

Keep in mind that Pacify has a .5 second wind-up time. The attack is not fired until .5 seconds after the key has been pressed. Considering the visuals associated with the ability, that means a .5 second delay from the first visual indicators (not including predictability if your enemies are good) to the effects taking place. To contrast that to some of the other attacks/abilities you brought up…

Junkrat’s Concussion mine has a projectile speed of 17.5 m/s and features no delay between button press and projectile deployment. If activated at the same time as Concussion mine, Pacify (with its .5 second delay) will outrun Concussion mine after it has traveled 8.75 meters. Considering that Concussion Mine is typically used at close range to secure a kill (specifically within 8.75 meters of Junkrat), Concussion Mine provides about the same window of reaction time as Pacify.

As if that were not enough, Concussion Mine has an explosion radius of 3 meters, making it far more difficult to evade entirely in the given timeframe than Pacify.

Flashbang. Flashbang has about a .35 second delay between key press and projectile detonation. That’s an even smaller window than Pacify. Then consider than Flashbang has a 2 meter blast radius beyond that, making reacting to and evading it nearly impossible if not telegraphed prior to its use.

Helix Rocket travels at 50 meters/second and has no delay between key press and projectile launch. Pacify only becomes faster than Helix Rocket when used at ranges greater than 25 meters.

The rest of the abilities you brought up take longer to take full effect over most reasonable distances. That said, counterplay should not be problematic considering that the presence of three abilities you mentioned (Concussion Mine, Flashbang, Helix Rockets) also are not problematic.

I am neither for nor against this as of now. If I did have a strong opinion, I would not be willing to debate it now. It’s 3 AM here, and I really should get some sleep.

I apologize if anything I said here is incoherent, but again, it’s 3 AM here.

I honestly wouldn’t personally post it to reddit, but if someone wants to it may or may not garner at least some attention. I just detest reddit.
