Why do we have a Chinese NYE event?

China is one of the biggest markets for most game companies

  1. Technically LNY is celebrated in more countries than china, many territory with chinese influence in their history has a celebration for it as well. Most people have already touched on that tho.

  2. It’s also just a very good ‘spring’ event. Valentine’s day is often brought up but like…ngl, even as an american, I don’t have strong feelings about it and would be fine with tossing it altogether. What other holiday would we have in early spring?

  3. Korea and China are absolutely some of the biggest gaming markets out there, so it monetarily makes a lot of sense for blizzard to target that audience.

Well…

lets see:

  • Chinese New Year is obviously influenced by chinese culture.
  • Archieve is Story related
  • Summer Games is season related
  • Anniversary is Blizzard related
  • Halloween is mostly related to American culture, because even if it (kinda) exist in other western regions (and also eastern cultures) it’s not that big of a deal at all.
  • Winter Wonderland is season based from the name, but from the raw design highly influenced by the western cultures and religions (espacially christian)

Summary: It’s ok to have a event what appreciates eastern culture, when we look that atleast 5 characters (more or less) are influenced by eastern culture. Because we habe atleast one other event that is highly influenced by american culture (what is also ok)

Because american/euro/western New Years celebration isn’t particularly interesting. (Read: Does not have much Skin fodder.)

Wear glittery hats, drink, and shoot fireworks, and I remember there’s something about aNew Years Baby or whatever. That’s about the extent of it.

Meanwhile there’s a lot more mythology and culture involved with the Lunar New Year which can be mined for cosmetics and hype. The most obvious one being that each new year is associated with a specific animal.

Remember that Blizzard actively punished someone who said a phrase in a tournament that could be construed as mildly promoting the idea of democracy in general. Since that person was from Hong Kong, Blizzard had to act quickly to please the Chinese ASAP by showing that they will crush anyone who promotes Hong Kong democracy. They’ll do ANYTHING to bow before China, even severely reprimanding people who show even the slightest pro-free Hong Kong ideals (pro-free-HK is anti-China according to China itself).

And you’re surprised they have a Chinese-specific event?

what other event could they put between the winter event and the anniversary event?
You only got valentines (as far as im aware) but you cant really create an entire multi-week event for that with new skins each year.
It makes sense if there is nothing else they can put here

(Activision) Blizzard is a sycophant to the Chinese market/Government, that’s just why.

I’m just a bit annoyed that they call the event “Chinese New Year” instead of the more global “Lunar New Year”.

Because it’s Blizzard.

Well, when you compare the two, chinese new year is a lot more interesting than some ball dropping and people lying to themselves cough new years resolutions

Spring event when tho?

I’m looking at the overwatch twitter and they refer to it as Lunar New Year, same with the Overwatch website.

There's a second opinion for you.

Lunar year is an ASIAN holiday, not only chinese.

it actually depends on the amount of topics you can cover in individual events:

  • summer games: sports and holidays
  • halloween: horror and fantasy themes
  • archives: lore
  • anniversary: fantasy on everything

winter wonderland: like many games, we don’t just want to pay homage to “Christmas” but we use the term Holiday and the wonders that winter has to offer, and every country in the world is different. in fact on Overwatch it can be the canon of winter chirstmas. o winter sports, o typically winter creatures (krampus)

new lunar year is a tribute to a holiday recognized throughout Asia, not just in China. we have a lot of skins that speak of Korean, Taiwanese or vaguely Japanese culture, but there is also a strong reference to historical Asian readings such as a journey to the west or the novel of the three kingdoms.

celebrating Valentine’s Day or Easter would be very limiting as an interpretation of the themes over time. for this reason I suppose that it makes more sense to treat those holidays as happened for mardì gras ashe: if there is an opportunity, give a skin challenge of the holiday.

I know right… People like OP remind me of the stupid Americans I have to live near that believe the English language is an American language. They literally don’t know anything outside of their own little bubble and think they are the center of the world.

It’s specified as lunar new year, to accommodate for the amount of countries that also celebrate it outside of China.
