Why do tanks need to do as much damage as DPS in OW2?

Overwatch had tanks from the very beginning and had like 5 million players at its heydays, so i’d say people like the idea of tanks.
It’s only natural that game eventually loses some of its players, due to people growing older, gaining more responsibilities, new games been released etc.

:skull:hog can 1 shot most heroes and heal so ridiculously quick my guy

As far as I see it, devs are just needing to iron out the Support role, and solve all the technical and visual issues, then wait for a good time to launch the game.

They aren’t going to go back to the drawing board on design at this point, and deliberately make Tanks and Supports less fun.

But for real, it sounds like you want Overwatch to be Valorant. And I really don’t see that happening.

I know they won’t. We will have an imbalanced game that will continue to slowly die because of all its anti-fun mechanics.

wow it’s literally a war of factions, in ancient times it was common horde players to hate alliance players

I also played board rpg
and read RPG manuals, which is where literally all aspects of RPG based games take their inspiration from

and I’ve never seen this idea that tanks can’t do damage, I believe that what people confuse that DPS (damage per second) as the math dictates you can do damage over time, doesn’t mean that if you get into one confrontation with a non DPS he can’t outrun you.

So making roles equally fun, is anti-fun?

Compare the damage output of a Prot paladin vs a ret, or a prot warrior vs a fury

Does this not mean the tank can’t kill things in its path or am I wrong?
not in terms of numbers, DPS can only do damage over time, if a squish comes in contact with a tank, it is expected to die.

There is nothing equal in fun or gameplay balance between someone who is the leading vanguard and center of a team who has freedom of motion without blowing up compared to a fragile character being hunted down who blows up nearly instantly and comparably uneven impact on yhe outcome of the game.

Making the game balanced is the foundation of a good game. Making the roles equally fun by ignoring game balance is fundamentally flawed. I still don’t think they are equally fun despite all of this. Anti-fun mechanics in an FPS are things like giant barriers preventing damage and dedicated healers preventing kills.

how about respecting the tanks agency?

Realistically a tank should have a damage output relative to others that is in the same ballpark as inversely proportionate to their survival advantage modified by their range restrictions.

Supports certainly have damage restrictions relative to their advantages in utility or heals. Tanks for some reason think they should be unaffected by limitations, and Blizzard seems to agree. Of course I believe that those philosophy will eventually Doom the game because they need 4 players per tank to buy into a game where they are unimportant accessories to a far more important character

As someone who has played Lucio throughout ow1, I know full well the demoralizing nature of havling outside being an accessory to Rein.

Reminds me of the Rick and Morty butter robot.

Lucio: What is my purpose?
Blizzard: You help tanks have the fun.
Lucio: Oh my god…

Better than average isn’t I’m every single match in owl yesterday.

Obviously ow1 balance and ow2 balance are different. Ow1 he’s fine.

Ow2 he’s the strongest in the game.

OWL doesnt confirm anything yet its only been like the first few games wait towards the end and then nerf the characters if he has consistent play through the entire play.

ah you say, hack stuns discord (no cd) being the focus of the entire enemy team, really the few things that limit the tanks actions.

They all pale in comparison to being the immortal vanguard leader of every single charge and center of every team.

you speak of rein? He’s immortal because he can be hard-pocketed, and devs thought it would be cool to create support characters with multiple AOE heals and no effective cd.

I speak of all tanks. Their primary function in this game is to be the vanguard of their team, choosing positioning, movement, and being the one with the ability to take the brunt of it. It would probably be even better if the tank could paint targets for his teammates to assist than be imbalanced damage as well.

so you want cute tanks, this is still a pvp game

let’s say tanks don’t do any significant damage, you would see all the dps in the game just jumping in their face and performing skill spam, and they would die without being able to defend themselves, the damage of the tanks is part of their defense too.
