I go Torb and pretty much force Winstons to switch. Torb is very underrated overall.
as long as you have better dps i agree. once you go wooden territory, reaper does one thing most heroes can’t do. Hit his pellets.
a soldier missing 60% does barely any dmg.
reaper in the same rank still 4 shots anything.
but very bad when the game has decent dps as he won’t ever get close.
which for Winston needs much more awareness than having a finger that can press a button.
kinda reaper gets to land one shot on you and he is back to full hp.
It depends a bit on team compositions and maps how good Reaper will do. But you can certainly out play the Reaper if you are good enough at Winston.
Think the thing is, Reaper is probably one of the easiest “counters” to Winston, as in demanding the lowest amount of thought or mechanics. Hence a lot of people will go to him and attempt to counter him. It helps that there are plenty of Winstons out there that do not change their playstyle when someone swaps to Reaper. Allowing the Reaper to get in his face and shoot at him.
So when a Winston is not respecting you enough or is only able to play in one way and not used to dealing with Reaper. He can get great value. But I’d argue there are better options but those often require a bit more thought of how to play.
Even if he can’t kill winton, his existence is enough to deny him and make him piss off.

Reaper does a lot to deny winston value, while not a hard counter, is pretty substantial now that there is only a single tank. Hanzo and bastion do this better though.
Because he does, OWL coaches say it, and it was shown in early OW2 winston/soj/reaper dive comps. Swapping to dva was strong against a good reaper, and winston was chosen over dva due to the bubble helping out the friendly reaper more on dives. Spilo has a good video on it, if you look back to old ow2 vids. He is a good tool against winston.

Yes, he’s essentially gun version of Rein.
In most ranks people don’t play reaper vs Winston correctly. Once you understand your job though then he makes Winston have little to no value. I believe torb does reapers job better though.
Yeah but there are better heroes that does his niche better. So why take a Reaper when even a support can do his job better
Reaper only has to stay near his team and suddenly winston cant do anything. If he gets too close then reaper melts him, the only time a winston can outplay a reaper is if the reaper is actively chasing him or straight up ignoring winston. In that case then yes winston can play around that because of the short hop cooldowns as you mentioned. In any 1v1 scenario, reaper will kill winston in about 3-4 shots.
Then what value is the reaper getting when he is on babysitting duty. He’s a dead dps if he can’t get close. It’s not exactly hard to engage with Winston without using jump, force cooldowns by bubble dance, and then jumping away. if you force a nade ,suzu, or lamp that is mission accomplished. It’s an extremely dumb Winston player if he is 1v1 a Reaper as well. That is a person issue not a character issue, Winston has all the tools he needs to make reaper a non-issue.
In theory, this makes red team’s tank vulnerable to focus fire while the backlines are contested.
What value does reaper get? A giant gorilla TANK unable to do anything because of a dps. This allows the reapers team room to basically kill everything without a tank in the way. If you don’t understand this then I cant help you. On paper, winston has the tools to avoid reaper, in actual play, unless that winston is willing to rely on his team to make space instead of himself (unlikely) then he simply cant work.

This thread is what happens when people mistake counter with “hard” counter.
Yes Reaper doesn’t “hard” counter Winston but he does definitely counter him. Sombra vs DF in old OW1 was a “hard” counter. All DF could do is basically press M1 and pray.
If I’m playing DPS and there’s an aggravating Winston on the other team, I go right for Bastion.
They will switch or they will lose.
she doesn’t, but limits a bad genjis Engagement to 4sec. can’t kill in 4sec? she counters you. can? she doesn’t.
1: Counter doesn’t necessarily mean “I exist, you don’t.” Soft counter is still a counter, counter’s even in the concept.
2: Orb to self heal, support passive, and the beam that is right-click/alt ignores deflect and heals her.
3: Fade to escape or chase.
That literally counters Genji and I will refuse to take any response seriously that says she doesn’t counter him.
Once upon a time he hard countered Winston, the way a Pharah hard counters Reaper.
Then Reaper got nerfed, tanks got buffed, 5v5 happened and now it’s a soft counter
