The common expression of this is,If this were true then why is triple dps not as popular as triple tank or triple support? But it goes way deeper than this. To me, dps is like the quarterback of the football team. If they have a decent offensive line and receivers, then the quarterback is the one who looks amazing and gets all the glory but under the surface these other two roles are just as important. If his offensive line is horrible he will get smashed all day but if he is protected will be able to do qb stuff and look awesome. If his receivers can never get open he will get smashed because he has no one to throw too. I’m sure you can see the parallels to the roles in Overwatch.
The Tanks are like the offensive line for the dps. They take the brunt of the damage for them and push the enemy back to the point where dps has enough space to do damage and use their abilities. Healers are not directly analogous to receivers but they are obviously important as they help mitigate incoming damage in the form of healing. If someone can come up with a way healers and receivers are similar that’d be nice
If one of these roles is not functioning properly, the team will struggle. But if all are doing their job well it will seem as if the dps are doing everything because the main way to push an objective or defend it is to do more damage to the enemy and dps are the ones who do most of the damage. But as we should all know, tanks and supports enable so much of what dps need to perform their role to the best of their ability. I hope this clears things up. Tanks and supports are just as important as dps. We can debate which of them is more difficult but when it comes to importance, one does not triumph over the other.

Main tank in particular is often times the most important role tbh

In higher level play main tank is considered the most important / impactful role. On ladder it’s the best player relative his/her SR that wins games.

what do you mean by “ladder” ?
Hehe sorry was using Jayne lingo - basically comp.
He differentiates comp from scrims where he refers to comp as “ladder”.
and now I need to know what you mean by “scrims”…sorry
also how is higher level play not comp?
Scrims - prearranged matches between premade teams outside of the QP / comp environment. Obviously has way more strategic elements than any comp match where tactics etc has been discussed beforehand.
Are these scrims done in a custom game, then?
ie create your own game?
Yepp - I believe that’s the way they do it.
so what is the difference between “high level play” and “ladder” since both appear to mean comp?
High level play means high rank games, like gm+
was hoping to be answered by Patman - tho I dont intend to give offense in saying so
People like SureFour solo’ed from Silver to Master’s smurfing, spamming literally only McCree with close to a 95% winrate. The same can be applied to many other pros playing Tracer, Doomfist, Genji, etc. If the entire enemy team is dead, your comp is literally irrelevant.
OP has a problem understanding the difference between correlation and causation.

Theres arguments for each class. You cant have a good dps without a good tank, and you cant have a good tank without a good healer.
I’m sure you can throw team composition out the window when you have one of the best dps in the world against the lowest ranks. I’m sure Tom Brady can single handedly beat a local pewee flag football team lol. How is this relevant to what i said? Would Surefour win against a group of gm/top500 players if his team had 4 dps and no healer? Probably not? So maybe a good team comp actually does matter when you’re facing players of your skill level.
The truth, people say all the roles are equally important but main tank is probably the most important, and this is coming from a tracer, d.va, lucio player.

Saying Main Tank is the most important is weird to me considering our history of running D.Va and Winston for dive comps. People sort of consider Winston a “main tank”, but he doesn’t do anything close to what Orisa or Reinhardt do. They only gave him main-tank status because he can stall better than D.Va.

No he’s a main tank because he’s typically one to call an engage and initiate it. He’s not an offtank, all the offtanks have abilities to peel, which, while Winston can peel, he’s not very good at it, he’s better at leading the dive and contesting high ground

DPS are always the first blamed. This is partly due to medals and the kill feed. You do not see huge plays tanks and healers make on the kill feed. Also talks and healers that shoot for dmg which many do make it impossible for dps to do their job and then the tank or healer will say I have gold dmg or I have a dmg medal or elim medal dps are not doing anything. 1. People think medals mean they are carrying 2. People think killing enemies is the most important skill to have.
