Why Do People Rage At Counter Swapping?

I mean, isn’t that a huge part of the game??? Countering???

Just had a match where I wanted to try to play Mauga, I don’t play him so I am TERRIBLE. Enemy had a Doomfist, Anran, Echo, Lucio>Kiri and Mercy? All of them focusing me for some reason  SO I swapped to my girl Orisa.. We start STOMPING the enemy, and the Doom starts raging in match chat about me counter swapping. First of all, Orisa is one of my most played tanks, and if he was on Doom it just made sense. Why stay on a hero I never played before as our teams tank and lose because of it. No SIR. Anyway, we won, type GG and he rages more.

Why get mad about counter swaps? I just don’t understand it. It’s like getting mad playing chess.

You deny them from getting free kills/win, obviously they get angry.

TRUE. It’s just strange to me how often they act like its a “cheap” or “dirty” thing to do, when its literally the game.

5v5 issue.

That Doomfist was too proud to swap. Some players think swapping mid-match is a “taboo”.

Going of the example you provided, that Doom lashed out at you for nothing.

People get mad at counter swapping because generally it’s something sustained (meaning people will swap multiple times) and/or targeted (they will swap to counter you, generally the tank, but not anyone else).

Since 5v5 the tank is like… “Mr. President,” if Mr. President goes down, everybody be just scattering and giving up the fight.

A better example would be: you’re really hyped for playing Winton, and he is your main. After performing well in one team fight, the other team goes, Reaper, Dva, Bastion. Suddenly you either play sniper monkey, or just give up and swap.

And someone might say: “tHeRe aRe WaYs tO pLay aGaInsT yOuR cOuNTeRs!” Bro, if they are countering you specifically, you can bet your life they’re holding every single cooldown they have just for you. So no, there’s no way.

That’s why people hate it, it’s not even about winning or losing. It’s about killing the enjoyment.

Or if you wanna play rein they always pick ram/orisa/mauga, ana or mitsubishi(sometimes) and bastion. Or Zarya, Symmetra and Mei against dva.

Just people being silly. Counter swapping has been a thing since day one.

Nah, we dont have this new tanks before ow2. And bastion was stationary.

Even worse: recently a teammate got mad at me for counterwapping…

Yes. People use it as an argument against 5v5 but forget people already counter swapped back in 2017.

Lets be serious we could train a monkey to swap to x hero if they see y. Comparing it to chess is silly.

People dislike it because it’s an attempt to sidestep any skill matchup and instead just win on hero select. It’s unfun to deal with and the mains of heroes with particularly strong counters get tired of it.

It might be part of the game but it can be very tedious to deal with even if you’re willing to swap too. It’s especially problematic when it’s somebody on tank constantly counterpicking even when the other person tries to mirror. Remember the devs introduced the delay on seeing swaps specifically to address this behaviour. Some people just take it too far and the devs own actions have acknowledged that there is a point when it’s too much.

I think it boils down to 2 types of rage. On one end you have the rage that comes when someone counter swaps and they do it badly. You watch them goof up and it puts your team behind.

Then you have someone that gets counter swapped. The other player just plays better and they get angry because they don’t know what to do. It’s one of those things I think.

it depends on the context

i mean if you were counter picked im sure you wouldnt feel great about it even if it makes sense

but anyways lets say im just casually playing doom in quickplay and maybe im doing pretty well so that prompts the enemy tank to swap to orisa

okay no problem thats fine i can play around it

so they still arent making any progress and then they decide to drop the atomic bomb on me by swapping everything to make my life painful

im talking orisa cass sombra ana mizuki and all these heroes are reserving their cooldowns only for me and nobody else

yeah at this point i would be very upset, it isnt about wanting to have an easy time while avoiding hard matchups, its just the act of an entire team making a coordinated decision that i do not deserve to play the hero that i enjoy in quickplay

there arent too many heroes that people go out of their way to specifically counter in this manner but doom and ball definitely fall into the “hard counter on sight” category which makes playing them a lot more stressful

They find it an insult on their pride of “one tricking” they USUALLY are people who can only play 1 character REALLY well and then are trash at anyone else because they put 100s of hours into junkrat (just an example) but none into hitscan, so when you go a flying character to them it’s you challenging not only their skill level but also that they can’t counter swap to a hitscan on you.

But all in all in my personal opinion you should be good at atleast 3 characters in every role you want to play competitive wise, like for me I main cassify (mid flank coverage hitscan.) But then I also play Emre/Sojourn for longrange hitscan, and mei for brawler style range.

You have to have balance as a player and be able to adapt in this game, because the fact is in comp especially it is “adept or die” and some people just can’t handle that.

One tricking while being a very rewarding play style in the beginning it can become a double edged sword. I will say for anyone guilty of this to take a bit of time and try to find characters who have similar play styles or transferrable skills that way they can escape the “one trick crutch” because it’s not a healthy mindset or playstyle in my opinion.

Swapping is fine as the person getting swapped on since there’s not many matchups I would consider really lopsided, and those are typically on heroes that force lopsided matchups themselves, so you know what you’re getting into when you lock them in.

I only start getting bent out of shape when it’s like 3+ counters that come out. And it’s not so much about the enemy team, it’s moreso at my own team for somehow still not being able to do anything with the effective 4v2 I’m forcing just by existing.

Swapping is the game’s core mechanic and what sets it apart from other games. The people that complain about it usually just aren’t good at enough heroes to make it not a problem. Or they don’t correctly think of the heroes as tools abd instead just want to use the same tool for everything, which isn’t how this game works.

Them having Dva,Bastion and Reaper won’t prevent me from killing their supports unless they try to play a weird “Dva rush “ comp”…

But i would probably switch to Sigma…

Switching is the core of the game. How boring the game would be if you had to keep the exact same comp for the whole match. If you’re hard countered from the start, the game would be so desastrous ,boring and unfair.

Because its boring and no char should hard counter its poor balancing. Now if they did it tf2 style then ok but 30+ chars it just doesnt work. It is by far the worst part of the game.

This was one of my biggest complaints playing Stadium. You could be countered right out the gate and be on the back foot for the first few rounds, hoping you got enough to outbuild the counter before losing the match.

Isn’t skill also knowing your counters and knowing a threshold of when you should swap before your team stagnates and you lose the match simply due to your hubris?

Yes. And? The role requires a lot from the player and can be quite tedious. Either don’t play tank, which I think that’s where a good portion of players are, or find another game that doesn’t rely on roles. The only other solution is a complete reformation of the format, which we can kind of see with the 6v6 format - but that’s still to be determined.
