As many are eluding to in this thread, Overwatch uniquely (mostly, I guess there’s Paladins) dips its toes in both the MOBA and FPS player base with it’s hero design.
Knowing that, naturally you’re going to get a divide of people who think heroes who don’t require aim are poorly designed, and the other side of people who think hitscan heroes are overpowered.
People dont really hate them anymore, but the reason they used to was because they had all the advantages of hitscan with basically none of the downsides.
I feel like its important to remember that Hanzo is great offensively due to him being a glass cannon. Hanzo either kills a target when he’s dived, or he dies, and there’s a high aim requirement attached to his weapon. Plus, Hanzo can’t play counter sniper well beyond his sonic arrow.
Its different than McCree who’s only really weak to range.
There far too generic and not generic in the good but not great way, but so great they push everything unique about OW out the window. So people hate on hit scans because they are so good they make the game no longer OW, but CoD.
They were simultaneously the best to kill with and defend against everything, when something is always the best, and always what you should pick, than anyone not wanting to play hit scan will hate it.
Don’t let all the hit scan apologists think its for anything else, the reason people hated hit scan was because it was the best choice in every scenario and you were handicapping yourself if you didn’t pick a hit scan.
McMercee again with the blatantly highly biased take again.
like objectively projectile are more inconsistent than hitscans.
hitscan sources of error:
whether the shooter can place cursor where they want
projectile sources of error:
whether the shooter can place cursor where they want
whether the target moves out of the trajectory AFTER the shot has been fired as travel time exists and inherently provides that window of which the shooter doesn’t really have much control over
i.e. hitscans have the advantage when it comes to “aiming faster, reacting faster and being more consistent” inherently in most ranges esp in longer ranges which is most of the game. To claim players pointing out that inherent lower balance standing for projectiles as “wanting options to bypass skill gap unlike HitscanMasterRace” while said “HitscanMasterRace” does all that inherently more consistently is really hypocritical.
and to provide more objective numbers rather than waving hands around, I did some calcs (see reddit post below) to find the ranges where linear projectiles in the game becomes physically possible to dodge retroactively after they’ve been shot with the following assumptions:
target hitbox size is a point (I don’t have exact dimensions of heroes nor do I know who to choose as a “standard” target)
The problem lies in that Hitscan hero’s tend to have the best of all worlds. They do the highest dmg (with crits usually), have fast reloads and/or high clip size compared to most projectile heros. But the main thing is shots land where you click it. Consistent and regular dmg is such a huge thing in a FPS game.
Considering Hanzo is the only Projectile hero allowed to one shot any one it’s a pretty big burden to land two shots with most no hit scan hero’s at any kind of range to secure a kill on purpose.
Mean while most hit scan hero’s can land one head shot and one body shot to get a kill.
Honestly for the longest time I thought Soldier was one of the better balanced HS heros. He could do nice consistent dmg and finish people off but wasn’t the burst dmg killer.
It s really simple, a lot of projectile players choose projectile heroes because they rely heavily on spams and abilities to compensate for their lack of aim. The projectile players who can hit their shot from distance give zero biscuit about a McCree and his combo.
If you think about it, if you cant even hit anything with hitscan’s precision, why would you even try to play a more volatile projectile dps and then complain about it?
ooor they just like what’s in the rest of the kit rather than play a hero that’s basically just a CS:GO gun (i.e. wanting gameplay of more substance than only just pointing and clicking, i.e. wanting to do more in gameplay on top of just pointing and clicking)… or heck they just like the hero’s lore or visual looks.
you seem to fail to realise that no matter how good the player is at leading shots, ALL projectiles inherently scales worse at hitting with longer distances. if it takes like even 1s for the projectile to even reach where the target is initially, and it takes less than that time to move out of the width of its trajectory, it means it physically going to be very inconsistent to land outside of the control of the shooter.
and very clearly, not all projectiles are numbered to the point where the aimable range is very long. i.e. “can hit their shots from a distance” is a fallacy and is simply ignoring the facts around how projectiles work as it’s physically limited in capacity to “land shots from a distance” leading to them having a shorter effective range.
like not all projectiles have >100m/s travel speed like hanzo, mei’s or orisa’s to have a decent effective range, and even those aren’t that great in actual long range.
and no, idk how you can imply that projectile spam is as good/viable as purposely and more consistently landing directs. heck spraying and praying with like soldier or whatever other rapid fire hitscan is even still more consistent than spamming projectiles. if you think people play projectiles because of “inability to aim” and “just want to spam” then you’re sorely mistaken.
Reading a lot of the responses in this thread is so cringe… basically a sad amount of people feel that any hero who has a hitscan gun is bland and basically like CoD or CS:GO.
I don’t see this at all. Most tank players are fine with hitscans aside from maybe widow (and let’s be honest she does kinda delete tanks so it’s a valid complaint).
On my post i already said it, the projectile players who complain the most are the ones who cant hit anything, be it Hitscan or projectile bullets.
Take you for example, i dont know if you play Hitscan or projectile, just load up your DPS game and see how many time you get thing done due to deliberate aiming, and compare it to how many time you just spam or abuse some abilities/ults to bypass skill gaps.
Or just post your replays and show us why McCree or any Hitscan have advantage over you even though you are obviously a better player.
I’ll probably get stomped of for saying this, but the majority of active posters on the forums are disgruntled tank mains who are upset that they don’t have a huge upper hand in determining a win/loss anymore.
I shake my head in wonder when so many of them post about how weak tanks are these days.
