Right, and now that they’ve laid the ground work they will, and are, expanding on the female characters. Orisa and Miora are examples of this. We may EASILY get a female hero with a mask or some other oddity.
But I still can’t hep myself and have a caveat with their criticism; isn’t D.Va completely concealed most of the time? Ana has a TON of masks. “Oh but her default doesn’t”, and Genji has skins with none. They’re nit picking at the randomness and stylistic choice of the developers themselves. The looks of the heroes simply fit their story-line and are the artists choice.
One has to ask why does every piece of art have to conform to EVERYONE’S sense of aesthetic? Art is not homologous. If someone doesn’t like a piece of art they don’t buy it, not go and find the artist and tell him to change it. For this reason I say they are inconsolable and/or disingenuous, and there isn’t any point attempting to apologize or appease.
This isn’t true, if you look at the female characters in greater detail then you can see a significant difference in the choice of angles and curves used to define their facial features. They’re certainly more similar to each other than the men are, but saying they’re all the same is disengenuous.
Samefaced Women: Ana (young), Tracer, Mercy, Dva, Sombra, Widowmaker (esp non-blue), Symmetra, and now Brigitte
Tracer - petite face, large eyes
Mercy - narrow face, narrow eyes
D.Va - petite face, narrow eyes
Sombra - full face, average eyes
Widow - broad face, small chin, narrow eyes
Symmetra - square face, narrow eyes
Brigitte - full face, large eyes
Now this is just off the top of my head, so I can’t go into details about their noses and such. This also ignores their personalities, which are huge and distinct in OW and readily apparent in their expressions. I think their faces are distinct enough, especially when you also factor in the -much- more distinct characters.
What?.. They look nothing alike. This is like saying that all asian people look the same. You probably don’t have the ability of distinguishing different traits, its rare but it can happen, however most people can tell the difference very easily.
Pointier chin
Pointer, slightly upturned nose
Narrower cheeks
Thicker eyebrows
Essentially, Widow has a thinner more mature face. D.Va’s is softer and more youthful looking.
For comparison, when I look at this picture of McCree and Soldier, the only immediate distinction I can see is the chin. Soldier has a dimple and McCree doesn’t. Everything else looks pretty much the same by the standards being used in this thread.
Are you people playing this game in the Twlight Zone?
Mei doesn’t look like Moira.
Moira doesn’t look like D.VA.
Symmetra doesn’t look like Tracer.
Sombra doesn’t look like Widowmaker.
And the list goes on.
Yes, some characters like Brigitte and Mercy can look similar, but that doesn’t mean that suddenly all of them look the same. If they do all look the same then this entire community must have the eyesight of bats if it took this long to notice it.
I’m really not seeing it. They all look different to me. If you’d put up silouettes of all female character’s faces, I’d most certainly be able to tell them apart. Those things you call “identical”, like the eyes for example, look completely different in terms of expression and personality. Mei has big, round eyes which she opens up widely, as if she’s curious about what’s around her. Widow’s eyes are very focused, which is highlighted by her dramatic, gold-ish iris. Her face is tightened, as if she’s looking for prey, not being bothered about a single thing not involving her mission.
I’m not an artist, but having big eyes for females, for example, seems to be very important in the art style of Overwatch. Compared to the males, the females are supposed to show a lot of emotion and expression - which means their eyes are big. See, Moira wouldn’t have the same feeling to her appearence if she didn’t have such a dramatic look on her eyes.
