Lots of people hate on Marvel Rivals and call it the “inferior hero shooter” in comparison to Overwatch. So it got me thinking, “Who would be able to make a First Person Hero Shooter that could not only compete, but maybe even overcome Overwatch’s success?”
For me, I’d put money on Riot being able to deliver an amazing FPS Hero Shooter. Now, not to glaze, but Riot has had a pretty good track record of making “clones” of other popular games that explode in popularity. Valorant and League are both good examples. They also have great story telling and world building in there games, so I could very easily see them going toe to toe with Overwatch in that regard.
So if you had to pick a company that you think would make actual competition for Overwatch in the FPS Hero Shooter genre, which company would it be?
Also this is my petition for Riot to make a League of Legends FPS hero shooter. Please, Riot, I beg

Team Fortress 3 is probably the only game I could see dethroning OW. And even then, that sounds doubtful.

So many companies have tried to make their own discount Overwatch, damn near all of them failed. So, there’s no one that comes to mind really, but I do like your Riot idea. Specifically I like the designs of some Valorant characters and I tried it bc of it, but I never was into CS like gameplay. So what they should do is take Valorant and make it more OW like. Make it a separate game so that Valorant players still have their main game, but give other players an OW clone out of that game.

I think EPIC has the resources to make an “Overwatch killer” for real. If they ever did try, which I cannot be sure they would attempt.

Apparently Valve is planning on having a PvE mode in Deadlock. Maybe that’ll siphon some of the people who were excited for PvE in Overwatch.

Good choice. I would like to see them try their hand at a different genre from what they normally do.
Idk, Valve is capable of creating some bangers and I would not be surprised if they did dethrone OW.
While I do like Deadlock a lot, the gameplay is bit too far away from Overwatch for me to see it as a replacement for PvE. I’ll definitely be playing that though.

Apex Legends is really fun
id Software and Bungie would be the best bets, I think. They’re some of the best FPS developers around, and their major games have often incorporated some form of abilities. I don’t think id Software specifically is likely to take on such a project, but I’m confident they could if they wanted to. Bungie, having done a lot of PvP FPSes historically, I could see doing it, if the team survives; I know funding has been an issue for them.

Isn’t Valorant supposed to be direct Overwatch competition? I know that the gameplay is more akin to Counterstrike than it is Overwatch, but the whole hero shooter vibe of it is very much Overwatch.

No one will.
Overwatch was a complete accident. They were trying to make the next WoW and ended up with this as a consolation to try and save five years of fruitless development. Even blizzard can’t make a sequel.
All the big companies have tried but none of them have that special nameless something. Thankfully Rivals has been just successful enough to boost interest in both games while not actually meeting the same standard.
We’re very lucky to have this game. We should act like it more =)

It’s been around long enough now and is doing enough of it’s own thing that as this point? I think the only 2 cases for what might bring it down are:
- The OW brand gets sold to a new developer who runs it into the ground, not unlike 343 with Halo
or
- Blizz themselves just makes one too many poor choices in a row that drives off enough of the player base that the game begins a non stop spiral to irrelevance.
It would require a lot of marketing to pander toward people receptive to the message, “We aren’t greedy and are out to make a good game” crowd, offer no monetization, steady updates and new heroes, adjust the game to the gameplay tastes to those players, offer a high level of polish, and make the game cheap/free.
So like, a unicorn of a game.
The only reason Valve won’t with Deadlock is because it’s a moba-hybrid. It has all the chops and pedigree otherwise.
yeah i’d go with riot as well, they’re really good at balancing valorant
I think their devs would make a good hero shooter, not shieldwatch/ raidboss tanks overwatch, triple support marvel rivals

Rivals is not an FPS hero shooter but that game is currently my main multiplayer game. Spent 3000hrs in Overwatch and hasn’t looked back since.

Its not a direct competitor because as you mentioned, it leans more into Counterstrike than pure Overwatch.
Also, I dont think theres any team-based Tank/DPS/Support roles in Valorant?

I feel like creating a hero shooter requires a ton of up front cost that a lot of companies aren’t willing to put down or just don’t have especially if they can make a tac shooter or battle royale that doesn’t require a whole host of different animations, abilities and unique weapons.
For those who remember when OW first released they had like a bunch of cinematics and those aren’t cheap and the game was, from what i remember, insanely polished and was super optimized. I don’t recall having performance issues on my crappy PC back then.
Plus I think the trend is moving more towards extraction looter-shooters.

I mean I’ve been on the Rivals train since launch, I don’t play it as much as when it first came out but its been fun and it really leans into the over the top arcadey vibes. Season 9 has been a pretty wild and fun ride which has me pretty excited for Season 10 in a few weeks.

Yeah, I feel like the Pixar movie quality cinematics that Blizzard puts out for their games is a big reason that WoW and Overwatch got the big followings that they did, or at least Overwatch. The characters are the selling point and those show them off in spectacular fashion.
