I’m thinking these are not mutually exclusive points.
Roadhog is still terrible.
Sigma lost his kill combo.
Rammatra/Orisa barely surviving and being able to fight back.
Junkerqueen can be burnt through easily.
Reinhardht is a punching bag.
3 tanks are high skill intensive and require a good team to follow up (which you aren’t getting in casual play)
Map viability snuffs out a lot of them.
Matchmaking screws you over the hardest.
Damage is really high so you feel less of a tank and more like a padded dps.
New players can’t get into the role because of the burdens it has and old players are being pushed out from everything else.
Widowmaker can one tap 3 of them in open queue.
Flankers just running rampant.
Lack of any good drip.
Ana is still unchecked.
Mei and Cassidy giving us the hinder and freeze treatment.
Sombra being a menace. Falls under flankers but I’d like to keep it seperate.
Buffing Sojourn and 76 of all things.
No Mauga…
Discord orb. Although I find it ok as long as it’s not tied with any of these other issues.
Plus the season is nearly over and season 5 didn’t have anything good for tanks. So some are just waiting for next season or just quit entirely.
People stopped playing that experimental mode when they realised hacking, freezing and flashbang on the tank could roll them for free.
Plus fending off 3 dps was trash as solo tank, even more so when snipers got involved.
What’s weird was they changed the tanks for that mode but none of the dps or supports that really needed it.
Haven’t played in a couple seasons and wow. Playing tank feels oppressing. Constantly being slowed, canceled or slept. Supports are really strong right now. Also what in the world did they give Cassidy??
Is this an entirely new Overwatch dev team?
Anyways, been awhile since I played and its kinda disappointing to see what’s used to be my favorite game becoming.
To me personally its a shadow of its former self and I played from OW1 beta up to OW2 season 3.

Ana isn’t a big problem, at least for me. It’s Zen’s discord that’s melting the tanks. Being constantly discorded when you’re in line of sight with the enemy Zen isn’t fun and the only counterplay to that is to literally hide in a corner for a couple of seconds so the discord goes away and for what? So you can immediately get discorded again when you show up.
Discord should’ve been on a cooldown a long time ago.
It used to be that Blizzard support recommended you picked Hog once you were falsely banned for playing troll heroes. Those were the good old days, fam. People actually wanted you on pig. You were their hero. They would let you sign their face just to have such an alpha male in their presence. Where did it all go wrong?

So nobody actually addressed one of the main things the OP raised which is that in a lot of QP games backfill seems to be bugged and you never get a replacement for leavers (of any role). This is unconnected to perceived unpopularity of the tank role.
it’s not bugged it’s relaxed.
In earlier seasons you would be backfilled immediately now it takes more time.

The offtanks, which should no longer exist, are clogging up ranked.

Imagine managing to make tanks less popular than in OW1. Truly impressive stuff by Blizzard.
I used to be a tank main in OW1, but i didn’t like how 5v5 had played out in the tank role. Some tanks are just countered too hard by the H key. D.va was my favorite tank to play, but she gets counter picked way too easily.
With OW2 I would mostly play fill, but just like in OW1 that slowly started becoming just another tank queue button. Now, i don’t even queue fill specifically to avoid playing tank.
My big issues on tank:
- RPS counters - Countering the tank seems to provide disproportionate value, and it just isnt fun playing every single game into multiple heroes that counter you.
- Discord orb - It is too easy to just plop it on a tank and refresh it every time it falls off to effectively remove 25% of my health bar. Discord makes it so you really can’t make aggressive plays.
- Anti
- Reintroduction of CC - No one piece of CC in OW1 was problematic. The problem was that every player had add access to it so that it could be stacked. CC has slowly been creeping back in with the Mei/Cass changes. Even though there is still significantly less CC than OW1, there isn’t another tankbto help take some of the pressure when you do eat some CC.
These 5v5 replies are completely missing the point. Tank was EASILY the least played role in 6v6 as well so how could 5v5 be the problem.
The real problem is counterswapping. Its not fun to play counter roulette. Now you even have dps and supports trying to counter you at all turns. Teams are just playing murder the enemy tank. Many peopel dont wanna swap 5 times to win a game. Id say most people just wanna play 1-3 tanks. Not being able to play the characters you want is why tank is bleeding players.
They NEED to make it so you retain 0% ult charge when swapping
The “5v5” replies are a big Part because
- The game went F2P and got lots of new Players
- Game gets content every month
- Meta changes more often
- 2 Less Tank players per Team
And yet its still the least played role.
My friends stopped playing OW shortly after 5v5 was released, im still hanging in there but they butchered my main Role (Tank) so hard with 5v5, I went from grinding Ranked daily in OW1 to playing maybe once a week im OW2
OW2 PvP is a Joke compared to peak 6v6 (I know the last 2 Years of 6v6 havent been great but before that it was way more fun)

I wish overwatch was the problem. The actual game that flips my switch when I drink is too embarrassing to mention.
This attitude as you call it is legitimate. The tank role is terrible, since there are only a few real tanks and the rest are just jacked up dps. If this is what you think is the way to play, they should just do away with roles altogether and call it 5 on 5 dps. If they want roles, then the characters should fit those roles. A tank should protect, a dps should damage, and a support should heal. Blizz has screwed it up by making those dps tanks almost unkillable, but they offer almost nothing in the way of protecting the members of the team. That is why they don’t counter you as a tank, but they can just jump in and kill 3 of your squishy teammates instead. If I wanted to play a game where everyone was a dps I would play COD.
Tank in qp is still enjoyable, but I can only take so much before I get annoyed. My reason is mostly not understanding how allies can’t do anything when I have the attention of three enemies or I kill both supports. Making space isn’t enough. You gotta solo kill them too. But that’s not what the role is designed for, so it’s painfully hard sometimes.
