I can’t wrap my head around the fact that there are people who only play Overwatch for the gameplay. One because I don’t believe it (I guarantee all of those people have either bought or grinded for cosmetics) and two because it just sounds so boring. Do you care about the parts that actually make this game unique to every other game out there?
I say this because a lot of people bring up arguments like:
“Why are you complaining about cosmetics? Gameplay is all that matters, so who cares if it takes 2 months to grind 10 cosmetics”
“You need to play the meta picks, otherwise your throwing” or “I play whatever is necessary to win”
“Lore and PvE are unimportant, so if it must be sacrificed for PvP, then so be it”
Seems to be a very dull perspective to have. There’s no color in it. You might as well just replace every character with default blender model and play on maps with no textures. Do you not like the characters you play or, at the very least, have any interest in their story?
Counterpicking is something I don’t really do…(well I play support) and I just play who I want. (Sorry team)
I’m super interested in the lore honestly, I think it’s what makes this game unique to others, like the characters actually HAVE meaning rather than just being lifeless figures.
Challenges? I don’t really care about them. I still get them done, but not grinding. I play FOR FUN, not to sweat my head off playing games. I probably only sweat when playing competitive and that’s rarely (cough cough Silver).
The only fun in this game is not taking it seriously, even in Comp and then laughing at how ridiculous it all is because you can’t make it out the spawn door.
Honestly, yeah. I’d say the lore is something I’m really interested in. I started playing about a year ago and ended up watching the entire lore on YouTube because I found it so fascinating!
After spending 10 years playing WoW, I found Overwatch way more interesting than Apex, which was the only similar game I had tried during COVID.
The fact that there are three distinct roles, each with their own unique abilities, really hooked me, and my inner little Red Cross worker naturally pushed me into the support role.
I actually started out as dps in WoW because I thought I’d enjoy it more, but honestly, I find my peace in healing. That’s why I feel like I’m pretty comfortable covering the support role. I have the aggressive instinct to want to eliminate the enemy but when my team is being pressured, protecting them always takes absolute priority for me.
That alone was enough to make me fall in love with the game.
That being said, I do alternate between this game and Diablo, so whenever I hear the word grind, I can’t help but smile. I’ve never really felt the weight of that term in this game. Maybe during Drives sometimes, when they happen to fall on a weekend where I’m particularly busy and I have to balance my precious real life hours with my precious gamer hours. But definitely not “grind”. Not even remotely close
I pity you (and myself because I’m still clinging on to hope that this game will miraculously turn it’s lore around in a good direction for once).
The recent lore and characters feel very flat and uninspired. It’s almost like they’re instantly doing whatever they see suggested on Twitter instead of choosing to take their time to write a good story.
It’s better that you don’t. I did the math on Frogger’s last lootbox video and out of 340 possible cosmetics he got a grand total of 13 non-duplicate items…
2 months of grinding… for 13 cosmetics… and they’re not even guaranteed to be good.
That’s fine, as long as your attached to something, but there are people out there who despise anything outside of PvP updates because they fear it will impede/pull resources from their PvP updates.
That’s amusing for a while, until it isn’t. Like if I’m just going to die repeatedly, I’d rather go (actually) play something else. People get butthurt if the meta changes away from pokeslop, so you can’t even complain if the character you want to play is unplayable.
There’s definitely a grind, you’re just on a fresh account so every lootbox is a blue or white tier item that isn’t a duplicate (yet). Once you clear out those space-wasting cosmetics, that’s when you start to notice how unrewarding they really are.
No, I have zero interest in the characters and their stories and I wouldn’t mind for all of them would be blank, Echo like, white robots with different abilities. I would also not mind if there would be only 1 map. What I don’t understand is why do you believe that is more odd then bonding with a fictional hero. Or caring how they look when you can’t even see them.
The game, like any game is meant for you to outsmart your opponent, the rest is not the game. Chess has been played for thousand of years and no one complains there is no story between the queen her pawns and the horse on the tower romancing the bishop. That’s just odd you expect a game to handhold your entertainment when it’s supposed to be intellectual. The reason players are good at games is not because they are immersed or identify with the hero, is because they are smarter and faster. The entire lore and challenges and reward and skins is nonessential, meant to attract well people who are not there for the intellectual part of the game.
All that stuff is just a bonus. It’s worthless if the actual game isn’t fun to play.
I really enjoy Kiriko since they buffed her healing but man oh man, I do NOT like her lines, her voice, and maybe even her face. I’m using the robo-Kiri skin at the moment as a result and all I want for Christmas is for it to have a robotic voice filter.
Pretty much there with you OP, I don’t really understand the type of person who goes into a hero shooter and has absolutely no interest in the hero part of it. I don’t think there are particularly many people like that though, I’m sure the vast majority of people care at least to some degree about things like story, characters, visual-appeal, writing, etc.
I honestly don’t know why I play either. The game’s matchmaking is so hilariously predictable and awful. Have one or two good games? You will be put in to a back to back to back stomp fest 9/10 times. get stomped 5 times in a row? Well lucky for you you now get to eat the feeders on the enemy team for 2-3 games!!! Their matchmaking is awful and will be the death of the game far quicker than any broken unbalanced heroes could ever bring.
I probably have a couple thousand hours in smash melee and the 64 version even though there is literally nothing meaningful to accomplish beyond gameplay.
I think a lot of us grew up playing games when gameplay was the only thing that mattered because all the game was trying to sell you was the game
