It’s a bit of time i’ve developed an interest in 3D stuff (programs and systems, especially Silicon Graphics workstations) because it’s very interesting to see how an animated short it’s made and how the 3D magic happens, and watching the making of Rise and Shine i’ve seen Blizzard uses Autodesk Maya, i wonder if they use other software alongside it (like Pixar RenderMan), i’ve also seen a documentary where they use Zbrush.
Source filmmaker probably.
Why not SoftImage 3D or Blender for IRIX on a Silicon Graphics Octane?
You should make your animations using Source filmmaker because it’s free looks good enough and easy to use.
they make animated shorts?(i know they do but they have not for such a long time)
Same, probably it’s a plugin for Maya they enginered theirself, but i guess they probably wrote shaders for Pixar Renderman
It’s quite a pain because you don’t have much freedom as Blender or Maya and it’s quite limited in some functions. Also it runs only on Windows as far as i know, instead Blender runs even on Linux and IRIX, and older versions of Maya (the last one is the 6.5) exists for IRIX (i will get soon an SGI O2)
They used Redshift to render Overwatch cinematics. We switched to that renderer too some time ago. All those CPU based renderers like Arnold, VRay or RenderMan are too slow, especially with that new NVidia Quadro RTX announcement.
blenders also free… and way better
It’s likely something in-house, but you should use something like Blender or C4D if you can get your hands on it.
I heard it is harder to use takes a stronger PC and dosen’t have as big of a community.
Most probably Maya.
have you not see any of the character lore vidoes or wow animations shorts???
They render with redshift.
And i immediately recognized it
But i see there are other programs that i never seen

Movie Maker and Powerpoint
have you not seen the lore videos for forza horizon 3? other than being made by the same company what does wow have to do with overwatch?
3ds max, ZBrush, Mudbox and Maya are used.
I took this info from this video:
Which says the info is taken from job postings online.
I don’t have much to add. Maya is basically the industry standard program for these things.

thats a sure no, source looks way worse that those animations, they are at pixar level
