What exactly is the point of losing trend?

In a team based game, where 2 teammates can leave your game, and leave you barely scrapping to do any kind of progress against strong team with Mercy pocket, very specific example I know.

And in games like these, if it was any other game, there would either be no losing trend, or there would be some kind of mitigation because of the leavers.

In Overwatch, you get losing trend, because apparently it is your own fault that you get matched with leavers in Ranked competitive…

Lose a game… Could be a lot of reason

Lose a lot of games in a row… Very likely your the problem becomes your rank/mmr is too high.

Yes errors do happen but whe they do you’ll easily climb back up since it’s deflating your rank.

The reason it exists is to get people to there correct rank quicker to make better matches and while errors do happen in general the system achieves this.

Game design has to consider what player behaviors it incentivizes. If you reduce or eliminate the SR loss when there is a leaver on a player’s team it incentivizes the players on losing teams to bully one of the players into leaving. That’s why they don’t do it. And that’s not me theorizing, they’ve actually brought that up anytime they get asked why they don’t refund SR losses when there’s a leaver on your team.

This is a pretty well known economic principle that was documented in the 19th century. The examples at the time were bounties on pests- so if you have a bunch of venomous snakes in an area causing problems, you would put a bounty on them. You’d pay hunters for snake carcasses. The problem was that this would increase the snake population in the area (which was counterproductive because the whole point of the bounty was to reduce the snake population). In the case of OW, reducing or eliminating the SR penalty when there are leavers, would increase the number of leavers.

IMO leavers in ranked should get harsher penalties. I’m talking like leaving once is an hour ban, twice is 24 hours, 5 times is a season ban level of harsh. Leaving in QP is bad enough but I think already appropriately punished. Leaving in comp though is so much worse. I don’t think that it’s discouraged enough.

EXACTLY!!! It’s a horrible system that needs to be completely overhauled. I wonder if the Genius DEV on Team 4 is still working at Blizzard still? Brain dead system!!!

There actually is some compensation for getting leavers now.
But it’s not a lot of SR and it doesn’t work if you were in a group with the person who left, specifically because of the reasons you mentioned.

You have to lose 5 in a row to get losing trend. You only have to win once to stop it. It’s crazy unlikely that one person would lose (and never win) due to leavers that many times, especially since it’s statistically more likely for you to benefit from leavers on the other team than suffer from leavers on yours if you never leave. In that case, you’re 20% less likely to have a leaver on your team than they are.

True, but I don’t think it’s very significant. I get why they do it. It probably feels better to know that there’s some compensation. And not allowing the compensation when you are grouped with the leaver makes sense. I doubt it’s significant enough to impact ladder rankings or the overall SR distribution. But it might feel better for some players.

thats why you punish leavers with double loss, instead of making it a problem, because you can also just, mute everyone, if your team doesnt play the game why should you?

yeah no, bad example

In league you literally lose 2 games by disrupting/leaving one, it’s a harsh punishment that very quickly stops disruptive behaviour in higher ranks by keeping disruptors in lower ones, but of course there’s bans too not just more rank loss

no you don’t, I won game and 1-2 games later I have losing trend,

the system is brain damaged at the very least, there’s no way to sugarcoat it

are you forgetting the idea of naturally losing, then losing won game due to leavers/rank miss-match/etc., then naturally losing again?

have you ever seen a consolidation in ranked? the system KNOWS you are worse rank, but still keeps losing trend regardless

literally opening window in winter then turning up heat instead of closing it kind of system

that may be true but also if you play stadium which i do in rank all skill levels are able to match with any skill level. so a day one can be in a game if you top 500 makes no sense at all . this needs to be fixed

what does “getting to correct rank quicker” mean?

this would only apply to smurfs or brand new players, but chain wins and losses don’t make sense for actual rank climbing,

you’re not suddenly 5x better, and you certainly aren’t suddenly 5x worse unless you take like 2 year break from a game and remove experience from the hours you’ve put into OW, not to mention any transferable skill from other games too…

Pretty sure it’s the same in OW. You lose around the SR of two losses if you leave.

It’s not based on x games in a row, but rather on x games lost out of your last 20.

Same thing happens with winning trend. Win 6 in a row, you’ve got a trend going. Lose one, then win 2 more, you’re still on a trend.

Yes. It’s something like 7 out of last 10 matches played in the same mode on the same role. So you need to have a 70% win rate or a 70% loss rate over your last 10 matches in order to get the accelerated SR change. Which seems pretty reasonable.

How does this change the fact that losing teams are incentivized to get one of their members to quit?

And now you’ve even further incentivized OW becoming a space in which no one communicates with anyone else. And that’s certainly something that they are trying to avoid- they want to try to promote in game communication. And that’s going to be hard, but implementing a system that refunds all SR loss when a leaver is on your team would make it all but impossible. It would incentivize all sorts of things we definitely do not want to incentivize and it would make the SR system more gameable. There’s no upside really and lots of downsides.

The example doesn’t matter. It’s the principle that’s important. You always have to think about what you are actually incentivizing when implementing these sorts of rule changes.

I shocked you struggling with this. It means it’ll take less time to hit your rank.

Chain wins and losses shouldn’t happen after a certain point which is why it’s a good indicator of someone being at the wrong rank.

So, before i answer this when you think or express your self in hyperbolic slop like this. You not arguing with anyone but your own delusion.

That said, meta shifts, there rank inflation, community knowledge changes, people try new things, events change how many people play, weaker players leave as the season go on…

There are endless reasons why this can happen and they can compound.

Stadium isn’t the same matchmaking system and some of the rank message are wrong because of but there is no loss streak or win streak mod in stadium

I wouldn’t focus too much on the details of the wins and losses. More specifically what the game thinks about the winning or losing trends. Focusing on gameplay is more important in the long term

To make you hate yourself.

Genuinely, though, I don’t know. But Losing Trend/Winning Trend need to be removed because they certainly help people trying to derank/get carried on purpose get down/up further faster.

the consistency of your skill. ive lost a few in a row but then on a few i was expected to lose and it made up for it. also when you lose did you out perform your whole team?

clearly you need harsher ban because afk/leaves are quite common

that’s stupid

that’s also stupid

no

how do you do that?

this isn’t CS:GO, you can’t just teamkill or actually grief them

I think you’re mixing one thing with other, how does outcome of the game reset affect communication?

yeah, like implementing bunch of trash isn’t good idea for example

what is “your” rank? how can one struggle if they’re already at their rank?

nope

ah yes, im suddenly GM from silver just because meta changed, makes total sense

how does one focus on gameplay, if you’re being punished by system because your teammates aren’t great?

I guess this is the actual answer

does it give losing trend after winning a game you were “supposed to lose”?
