What does Overwatch need right now?

You going to need tin foil because you just cooked ORCWOMAN.

More reliable servers?

More attention paid to the setting and characters - it seems like juicing up the lore end of things ought to give pretty good bang for the buck and would provide a lot of window dressing and ideas for maps and events. Rather that just kind of poking at it after laying off the old writing staff, perhaps it is time to make a serious effort at it to avoid weirdness like the Kiriko-Hanzo-Genji age oddness. Get some cheap engament by filling us in with why the various locations we endlessly brawl over are significant.

  1. Matchmaker needs serious attention
  2. Balance each mode separately (5v5, 6v6, and stadium)
  3. Bring back cinematics
  4. Server disconnections are really an issue
  5. Feedback on accounts that get actioned after reporting them
  6. Better rewards for playing the game

In my opinion:

  • An overhaul to the monetization scheme = getting rid of fomo, and making the whole thing more reasonable/fair:
    • Non-expiring battlepasses (ideally they'd also be free).
    • No more weekly shop rotations, all cosmetics should be available for purchase at all times.
    • Significantly lower prices all around. A single legendary skin should not cost more than 5€/$ maximum (and even that I think is pushing it).
  • Pump the brakes on the near-constant collabs, and focus more on Overwatch being Overwatch again.
  • A serious overhaul to the game's social-systems/-aspects addressing all the following pain points:
    • Overly harsh QP leaver penalties.
    • The overzealous chat filters & reporting system.
    • The endorsement system pointlessly stopping you from using chat/creating custom game lobbies, and doing basically nothing else besides that.
    • The lack of an in-game grouping system (we already had one in OW1, there was no valid reason to remove it).
  • A map editor for custom games (and significant updates to the workshop in general).

These are the most important things for me. There’s also some other minor things that I think warrant attention, such as the newer mythic skins having the higher levels feel more like direct upgrades rather than alternative costume choices, but if I listed all the problems I have with Overwatch I’d be writing this list for literal hours -_-

If there’s one thing the hero card thingy has confirmed to me, it’s that there’s a decent number of newbies coming in to the game. So what I’d say Overwatch needs right now is a robust set of tutorials.

When I bought Street Fighter 6 on its release, I hadn’t played fighting games since around… the late nineties? Early 2000s? But it was cool, because it had tutorials to explain the basic flow of the game, its unique mechanics, character overviews that outlined the general gameplan of each character, and combo tutorials that ranged from the most basic to some nasty blighters.

Overwatch has a new player run around the Practice Range as 76 and then turfs them out into the cold, hard world of online gaming.

It would obviously cost the devs a fair amount of resources, but maybe Overwatch would have a higher retention rate of new players if they knew what the heck they were doing.

Same reason why LOL retained virtually no new players that trickled in from Arcane. It’s partially a matter of learning as you play, but this genre of game provides no (or an otherwise shaky) foundation. No new player is interested in scouring all 300 wiki pages to learn of every menial interaction, inconsistency or stats to optimally use their abilities. The game is frustrating and inaccessible if you don’t readily have someone to teach you.

Reworking Freja.

QOL improvements to UI.

Improved Replay system.

Improved practice arena.

3 lootboxes a week in arcade, and then 3 for all the other playlists combined. Leading to 6 a week. This is to boost the arcade player numbers, since it’s dead these days.

Better hero leveling system. Having levels tied to playtime alone is extremely lazy. It was better when it had all the separate medals.

Freja, and Wuyangs hero icons look horrible, and inconsistent with the rest of the game. They look like they belong in a different game. Apperantly they are gonna redo all the icons to match, which I am against. I like the style of the current icons, and I think Freja, and Wuyangs icons should be changed to match.

Improved gold comp skin. Allot of the time it looks the same as many other gold weapon skins. It should be changed so you know easier if it’s a comp weapon skin or not. This or change the gold skins that are combined with character skins. 1 or the other.

More consistent bans. I have reported countless cheaters, and bot accounts. I have never seen the notification telling me what’s happened? Bot accounts are teams that just walk out the spawn and stand still. The hole team all have similar names being a bunch of random letters, all the same length. Clearly fake accounts, yet I never get feedback on my reports?
The banning process clearly needs to be improved.

More skins across characters. Skins seems to mainly go to a handful of heroes. Like Kiri, Mercy, and Genji. While other heroes like Zarya, Ram… Basically never get skins. I know that the popular skins sell better, but they doesn’t mean less popular heroes should be ignored.

More maps. We rarely get more maps. Feels like 1 a year.

Better custom games. The workshop rarely gets improvements. I think solid objects, even it’s the same as the current transparent colours, but allow people to make them solid so you can walk on them. This would be a game changer.

Workshop tutorial in game. This would make it easier to understand, without needing a ton of YouTube tutorials.

Improved new player experience. So many people don’t even understand the difference between tank, and DPS. We need ways to help players understand the essentials of team work, and how each role is important. Help preventing 1 tricks, who think it’s everyone else’s fault. Even just little things like highlighting recommended roles. So if you only got 1 tank, it highlights the tank heroes on select screen, saying that you need another one. For 6v6 ofcourse.

I could go on all night tbh. I love Overwatch, but there is so many little improvements that could be made :joy:

I know it’s not exactly what you mean but I saw someone say lore and I just want to add my piece to that because I think there’s a lot of potential but also a lot of mishandling of the story.

Definitely we need more lore content and not like what we’ve been getting recently where it’s just Disney reskinned.

The original lore had grit and was about war. Now it’s all silly quirky and jokes. It’s lost the original idea that there is hope for a better world, but the world isn’t better yet. The way things are now, every character acts like war is fun, which is not at all what the original cinematics portrayed, and honestly is a little off-putting in general.

It’s not enough to make a sad moment every once and a while and call it a day. The story right now lacks weight. It’s too light hearted given the story we are supposed to be seeing unfold.

The Kiriko cinematic comes to mind as an example as it just lacked any material to take seriously considering it is literally supposed to be a story about violent Japanese crime gangs terrorizing a neighborhood and a girl who takes the role of a vigilante to ward them off. Instead they made a child not at all think twice about seeing a gang shoot her family in the hallway and brushed it all off then wrapped it nice in a bow and happy ending where everyone frolicked away.

Compared to the “Dragons” cinematic the difference is night and day and I’m hoping we can get a return to raw story telling because it’s clear the foundation is there and we have plenty of older cinematics that prove that it could be done, like The Last Bastion, Honor and Glory, Alive, Infiltration, to name a few.

Also lets get a new practice range where it’s full of useful drills and stations to practice different skills (If you remember SF Shock’s Therabody Recovery Lounge workshop code, you know what I’m talking about)

Just straight up Aimlabs/Kovaaks but integrated directly into the game.

Even making it a paid feature for the hardcore players to make it worth the dev time to build something like that.

We have hero mastery but it’s not infinite nor is it useable in groups. And personally I like when a training scenario is infinite so I can just play it until I decide I’m done, no menus and restarts required.

The target practice area they added to the practice range is a good start but it stops being useful once you can aim like a gold player. It’s just not challenging.

This point can’t be overstated.

Given how downright ineffective anti-cheat measures, including cheat reporting are, and the way the report system is abused it’s actually worse having it.

Obviously the urgent issue options recently added should remain.

That’s a really excellent idea and would support the game. Has to be a win. There must be a host of premium features that would be worth adding that could justify along with your season pass a “pro” season pass model?

They should also add PvE and have a PvE pass addon.

People can vote with their money.
