What does it take to go from Bronze 5 to Silver 5?

It’s also not helpful for the smurfs who purposely derank just so they could get their fill outta dominating the match

It takes many hours of grinding or getting a new account and hoping RNG is on your side

I do. The people I’m up against in every bronze match are infallible gods who never miss and never die.

Serious answer. If you are playing solo queue, you have to be as good as an average Gold player to climb from Bronze to Silver. To climb from any elo to the next, you have to be as good as the elo you are at +2.

Then, and only then, will you climb but it won’t be easy or fast. It’ll be a challenge.

There are two reasons for this:

  1. Matching just mixes up eloes like confetti. The single most simple and basic concept for a matching system is to simply match people against and with others at their own rank/elo, but for some reason that the devs won’t discuss, they simply won’t do this. They’ll try implementing 1000 other matching concepts and methods, but they will not try the most simple one. Keeping the eloes across all 3 roles at a similar elo. If they would just set the matching system to have Bronze Matches (Bronze ONLY), and then Silver Matches (Silver ONLY), etc., etc., then the game play experience would improve exponentially for the overwhelming majority of the playerbase. And then for grouping, you should only face other groups. 2, 3, 5 groups only. No groups of 4 should be allowed so that solo players can avoid ever playing in matches that have groups.

  2. Smurfs/alt-accounts. EVERYONE has alt accounts. There are very, very, very few players that exist without alt accounts. And alt accounts = uncalibrated accounts. So even when the matching system IS trying to match people at their own elo, it is having to work with a ton of accounts that are not accurately calibrated in the first place. Blizzard puts ZERO energy into preventing smurfing or alt-account usage. They do not care. It’s as simple as that. They. Do. Not. Care.

Bro, do you know how cringe this answer is? I wish I knew you IRL just so I could give you a good example of something for comparison. I’m sure there are things you are naturally bad at IRL, that would be a lot harder for you to improve at very quickly, but I don’t know what those things are. You’re taking for granted a ton of things your brain is good at doing automatically while playing OW, that others have to learn from scratch.

It’s like comparing John and Jill at how good they are at learning a foreign language. John is 25, went to a prestigious college overseas, and grew up in a bilingual home and with a family that traveled the world. Jill is 54 and not really even great at speaking her own native language, much less a foreign language.

Now, Jill was also an olympic athlete, has an amazing rags to riches story, and is the founder of a charity that now has 12 Children’s Hospitals that do more for providing healthcare to the needy than any other organization, even though Jill herself, doesn’t know the first thing about the medical profession, aside from sports related stuff.

And John is a high IQ guy, but keeps getting arrested for assaulting woman he dates.

But who is better at learning a foreign language? John, by a zillion miles.

Like, you gotta realize, you went from new to OW to GM in 6 months. You are in the top .1 of 1% of the playerbase… So you laughing at players that are struggling at lower ranks… that’s cringe bro.

Don’t play currently, but I went from B5 to S5. I never really played comp, so I got placed Bronze 5 and ignored comp for a few seasons. I went back, placed Bronze 3. Next season, place Bronze 1. Silver 5 after that.

Ethernyet, if I had to choose one thing I did to climb out of Bronze that helped he most, it would be to start playing every single match always hugging walls or cover (cars, etc.). Like play the game as if you will die in 1.5 seconds flat simply by not being near a wall, so you can never be away from a wall during the match. The closer the better, meaning, literally hug the walls you are near. Just being 2m off vs. being .5m off of a wall makes a huge difference in results.

This strategy helped me because my ADHD was better at tracking this method than simply trying to make sure to “not play out in the open”, which is something my brain would forget if I thought in those terms. I had to train myself by seeing the walls as my actual lifeline. Once I did, I got used to it and now it’s automatic.

The difference in Bronze and Silver is pretty minimal. You could probably apply one or two two fairly small things in order to climb to silver.

You don’t need perfect awareness, perfect aim, etc.

Unfortunately some skills rely on having other skills, so not going into all the things that a player should work on (which would be aiming for much higher than Silver) it’s much easier to give a couple tips to start doing that will get you to Silver and then from there, you will have to pick up on other skills.

Everyone is different and pick up on different skills easier than someone else. My suggestion to get out of Bronze and into Silver is going to be pretty pointed at some very basic things:

Try to get your deaths lower.
There are many ways of doing this, but ultimately don’t die when you don’t have to.
In Bronze a lot of players will trickle into 1v5 scenarios without their team when they don’t have to and will surely die. So, be aware of where the enemy team is and where your team is. It’s not a goal to just run forward until you see an enemy and start shooting cause if you ignore everything else, you will often run into very unfavorable matches or flat out suicide missions.

Use natural cover. Bronze players like to stand out in wide open spaces and this gets them killed. They want to see more, so they walk out and surely will find enemies that will shoot them and by the time they realize that they are in the view of multiple enemies, they don’t have enough time to walk out of open space and they die.
Practice always using natural cover at all times. There are exceptions when you don’t have to constantly be behind cover, but it’s easier to just always be behind cover and learn when you can run down enemies and use a little less cover.

Pathing. You need to know your escape routes. Bronze players like to walk down mid most of the time, but if you need to get out and back up, going back through mid can often be very dangerous. You may need to use side routes and some that aren’t the fastest path back to your team, but may take a little longer, but are much safer.
Along with pathing, if you have someone diving you, it’s ok to take them around obstacles and paths that make it very difficult for them to kill you. Simply walking around a column and moving towards team mates when you can, can make the diving enemy chase you around without being able to hit you much while you fight them off.

Know your match ups and when to be aggressive and when to bail. You don’t have to take every fight. If you are going up against an unfavorable match up and especially if they are full health and you are low health, consider rotating away from them rather than trying to take the fight.

Any time you die, ask yourself “did I have to die here? Was there other options I could have done to avoid death? Did I die because I was in a position that wasn’t good or was it simply getting outpalyed and I was in a good position otherwise?”
Review your own games and just go find all the places you died and watch and ask these questions, then learn from them and don’t repeat.

Just by lowering your deaths using these tactics (which you would need anyways to build on to more complicated tactics) you will most likely climb out of Bronze. These tactics are also necessary to continue climbing and playing against higher skilled players.
Just tell yourself that dying is one of the worst things that can happen. It takes you out of the fight for 10 seconds to spawn, plus the additional 10-30 seconds to walk back to the fight. Just dying two times can mean that you are effetely out of the game for a full minute and in a game where things change in seconds, being out a full minute is terrible.
You also can’t just avoid death and do nothing, so you need to find the balance of being safe while also getting value. There are ways of doing this. Cover, pathing, knowing when to be aggressive or passive are some of the basic things needed to get value without completely exposing yourself to instant death.

The next tip I’d give is manage your cool downs better. Bronze players will either throw out their cool downs willy-nilly or they don’t use them as often as they should when a lot of value can be found by using them correctly.
Don’t just throw them away. They are extremely powerful and when used correctly can help secure kills or save team mates.
Again go back and watch your own games and see how often your cool down usage did anything at all or you just gave up that cool down and no longer have it for a better scenario. Then go play games and try to cognitively think about how and when you should use your cool downs. You will find that you quickly rack up more kills when you use the correctly. Getting more kills gives better chances of winning team fights, winning team fights gives better chances of winning games, winning more games means climbing.

I don’t know whether it is worth worrying about rank. Play because you enjoy it and try and improve regardless of the match result. I play on console and I’m mid to high gold at support but climbing to plat (I’ve done it once) is a nightmare because I can no longer carry.

Also on console there is less incentive to reach diamond or above because a lot of people cheat and use a mouse and keyboard. So it isn’t fair. Massive respect to people who reach GM using a controller.

But overall, even to reach gold you have to play a lot. It maybe doable for most people but it still requires a lot of time if you are new to FPS games. I have 500hrs on Lucio. I’m fairly mediocre overall but I’m better than most bronze, silver and gold Lucio’s so if I fall to bronze trying to learn other supports (eg Lossweaver when he first came out) I just pick Lucio and grind back up (this was even before his season 9 buffs). That said, it was not easy and the bronze games were stressful because I was forced to hard carry and win 4v5 fights constantly. So the games were actually harder and closer than average gold games. If I was forced to play Lossweaver I would be stuck in bronze for hundreds of hours until I could play him like Lifeweaver is meant to be played.

Climbing on Illari is way easier! So the heroes you play matter as well. Being a bronze Mercy won’t be easy. But in the end, just play to enjoy it. Because the problems remain, no matter what the rank. The majority of the player base is in gold and low plat but most have been playing for at least 5 years. Apparently Overwatch doesn’t succeed at retaining new players hence the season 9 balance changes. There is no tutorial so they try out the game and get destroyed and never play again. Despite what people in the forum say, it simply isn’t an easy game for most people. But it is precisely because it is difficult that a lot of people keep playing.

In terms of practical tips - always group up. Try and lower deaths by not feeding. Work on improving ult usage. Watch the kill feed and let your teammates die if they are in a 2v5 as it means grouping up faster. If you feel yourself tilting or getting frustrated, stop playing. Only play because you enjoy it, not for the result.

Holy crap these matches are not even CLOSE to fair. AT19C2

I do think there is such a thing as Elo hell because one of my accounts was stuck in silver forever despite me maintaining plat/diamond everywhere else

For whatever reason the matchmaker insisted on putting extremely new players on my team but golds on the other.

It was freed after the rank reset and got to diamond

What take up paladin in WOW?

How do you view the actual good players in OW, like those in GM?

Yall need to realize exactly what people see yall as, even when you say things like this, even when you blame your teammates.

When we think of Bronze players noatter how good they say they are or how many excuses we think of this video here ^

Is it harsh? Yes, but this is the cleanest most to the point most accurate video of what Bronze players actually look like as individuals.

u2gm is terrible if you’re in bronze. the guy would stomp 3-4 gold to plat matches then the rest is climbing through diamond and masters. i can’t really think of anything a bronze player would learn from that.

I’m not sure what you mean by that quesiton. I’d wager if GM players single queued in bronze they’d lose some games too. But as others have pointed out, if you’re able to consistently carry 4 other players because you’re not actually bronze then you should rise out of bronze.

The problem is for people actually in bronze - we can’t get a fair fight and get stomped all the time, because of all the smurfs and trolls, and because the matchmaker is doing this on purpose.

People keep asking me for proof and when I present it they say I’m farming views, which couldn’t be anything farther from the truth. I’d say it’s time for all the matchmaker apologists to prove what they say. Show me some games in bronze that are actually FAIR matches. Because you can watch ANY bronze match I’m in to see the matchmaker PURPOSEFULLY putting the best 5 players on one team and the worst 5 on the other team, to ensure a complete stomp.

You said you view the 2nd worst rank as gods. So when you compare that 2nd lowest rank to one of the highest ranks, there must be a difference between those to even to you. What can be higher than gods? Is everyone above bronze gods? Do they become ultra gods in gold? It’s just a praise that doesn’t seem to fit.

It’s like calling people with well below average intelligence geniuses.

I doubt it. If it’s 1GM and 4 bronze vs 5 bronze, the GM is dominating. It won’t even be close, no matter the role.

So… you agree then? I was saying don’t use those

Coach Mills is a decent source of general advice. Im not sure what other cc’s are good for this :man_shrugging:

unbelievably false. the only way this would be possible is if they played mercy

I’ve had very high elo people queue with me and lose repeatedly, so it’s not false at all. I’m willing to put my money where my mouth is though, so if any high-ranking players want to alt and queue with me I’ll put money on the line that they will lose more games than they win, no matter who they play.
