I already told you why I potentially still view that as Bastian, but I will lay out one last time. Please set aside your own interpretation for just one second, and view the rework only through my interpretation if you actually want to understand why I feel the way I feel.
I view Bastian as an old war machine with PTSD and parts badly in need of repair. He’s capable of an extremely devastating amount of destruction, again a literal war machine. And he can turn into a sentry gun to unleash massive amounts od damage to even a large amount of units. Ignore Bastian’s damage at your own peril because he’s one of the most devastating weapons to exist.
Despite this Bastian has a kind and gentle heart. He just wants to help people. He just wants love. A war machine is what he was designed to be, his best skill. But it is not who he is as a person.
Now he has a family and he’s getting the love and care he deserves. New parts to replace the damaged bits. And a team to back him up. Bastian doesn’t need to be alone anymore. Bastian can be happy.
With that mindset…
Sentry being upgraded is fitting.
Repair arm is no big loss, he’s got Brig as a family member now. He doesn’t need it and can replace it with something that better enhances his skill as a war machine.
Tank I never felt a strong lore connection with. Healing arm either. Standing still I didn’t feel that way about either and wanted it changed for a long time. Because it made him a sitting duck and hampered his ability to be an area denier.

Well I guess if you can’t use your (clearly wild) imagination to figure out a way to remove the barrier without making the cinematic redundant, then no one can, right?

“Be their shield” Oh yea, that character with an AK 47… yea, that one…
I just don’t personally see how you can have such a… vague interest in the elements of the hero, without any connection to their meaning.
Does this mean you’d be okay with Sombra getting an “Upgrade” from a broom closet and ending up carrying around a rifle in-game?
Clearly, that wouldn’t work… but yet, it’s how you talk about Bastion.
I actually don’t think Bastian can lose sentry or Reinhardt his shield. Those abilites can be tweaked but Sentry and Shield are core to who they are as a character.
If they were to get rid of Fire Strike though, that wouldn’t matter that much. Same as healing arm imo
Taking bullets for them can be interpretted as “be their shield” as well.

If we balance the heroes based on loose interpretations at best, we muddy what they were. How is that not clear?
You could describe mercy loosely and turn her into a necromancer too… but that wouldn’t be Mercy.
I propose this to you… Why does it have to change so drastically at all? We could easily fix the in-game issues with smaller changes, there is no need to “Learn to accept huge changes” when they aren’t necessary.
I don’t see how you think this is a response to what I said. I clearly outlined in my hypothetical that whatever they replaced the barrier with would stay true to the devs’ own interpretation of Reinhardt’s “identity”
Unless your interpretation of their interpretation is that he could have an AK-47, then… sure? I guess?
I’m definitely not saying it would be an easy thing to do and I have no idea how they would manage it (I’m certainly no game designer lol) but I do think it would be theoretically possible.

My point was that this line of thought can be used to make ANYTHING sound like a “Hero upgrade”
“Sombra found a rifle in a case she stumbled upon during a mission, so let’s change her entire role in the game and give her a new weapon, it still fits her stealth approach.”
No… just no.
I think Sombra could wield a different gun and still be Sombra. If they replaced translocator, I’d be upset. But they could potentially replace that with something and still have her feel like Sombra. Opportunist can go too. And EMP.
For me, Sombra is invisibility and hack as her core identity. The rest of her kit backs up this core, but she still could feel like Sombra without it if they did a good design job that kept along her theme of infiltration.
Alright then, something happens to Sombra and she sees a bee get crushed… she decides to never hack again because of a story she wrote in her head about the bee, so it’s being replaced with a healing aura.
There, I reworked Sombra just like Bastion.
I mean his theme is “Shield” and “Knight” so I’m not sure they could ever replace shield. They could probably delete fire strike, earthshatter, and charge though. Even his hammer could become like an axe.
Bastian still has sentry, which you’re failing to acknowledge as his most displayed ability in the lore.
Nope, that is not Sentry. It does not fit the description of Sentry, or the namesake of Bastion.
It’s literally called Sentry and is a sentry gun. It’s just on treads now so he isn’t a sitting duck. I fail to see how being an easily killed sitting duck makes him a fortified defense of area denial.
And my point was that I fail to see how that relates to the hypothetical I posed.
I said that they could make changes as long as they still align with their own interpretation of the character’s “identity” not make any random changes they like.

Right. So it would have to fit the same theme.
Symmetra is still a builder.
Reinhardt would still have to be a shield somehow even if he didn’t carry around a literal one.
Well guess what? Those changes for Bastion, don’t align with any identity for Bastion. They’re random, they have no purpose, and I will never accept them.
After 6 years of “small changes” that did not work out, a soft rework is needed.
And beside, most heroes are rebalanced for the new 5v5 format and direction. Have you seen any McCree player complaining about losing his flashbang for OW2? And that is arguably “the most iconic” theme for him. At least Bastion still get to keep the Sentry’s shape.
And that wouldn’t be Reinhardt.
I’m going to actually and up angry at some point over the assumptions…
People seem to have the idea that I’m against reworks, I’m not. I actually WANT Bastion reworked… I don’t want the hero stripped away to nothing and built into something else.
You’ve done nothing to show that when you claim even a small thing like being able to move in Sentry form means he no longer has sentry, and therefore has literally zero parts of his identity.
You flat out told me even if the damage was the same it wouldn’t be sentry anymore
