What are some bad / useless callouts?

I’ve been in quite a few games where the “less is more” approach should have been done, and I know I need to work on making more callouts myself.

So, I was wondering what some of you might consider a bad / useless / annoying callout?

I guess “Sombra low health” seems useless to me.
Most of the time she has translocator up and she will retreat when she feels in danger.

“your garbage” is pretty useless call out…

Anything I can see or hear myself.

Hog wastes his hook in front of 6 people ‘hog no hook’.

Yeah, thanks cap

“Kill the Mercy” because every time someone says this, my team loses the ability to hit any targets or heal or use shields and everyone mindlessly hunts down the Mercy who’s crouching stationary on the payload watching as people die all around her

Screaming “I need healing!” in voice chat. Bruh, use the in-game voiceline because that actually let’s a healer see where you are.

People who want to share everything they see
“Our Phara’s rocket hit their Orisa”
“Our Roadhog took damage”
“Orisa just deployed a barrier”
“Their Winston is at full health”

“Please protect me UwU”
“Nice job guuysss :lips::hearts::hearts:

My favorite is “I need healing!” when my healing beam is already on them and healing them.

“X is in the backline” followed by 3 people leaving to run after that person while the 5 other enemies already start pushing again

“Guys come back to payload”, when there’s still staggers to be killed. You don’t need everyone on payload, it’s such a scrub mentality. One long ranged healer or whatever is enough, let the rest of the team push up and clean up kills and gain positional advantage.

However , there is still the thing that I wrote about. Everyone running back to kill one person while the enemies push again.

Instead of telling you bad or useless callouts I’ll start with good callouts:

  • Target priority/focus - “Kill/Focus [Hero Name]” - You often have to repeat “Cree Cree Cree Cree” for “Kill Mcree”
  • Critical CD used - “Hog no hook”, “McCree no flash”, “Mei no icicle/personal”, etc.
  • Calling for peel - “Help [Ally Hero Name]”
  • Calling for heal ally - "Heal [Ally Hero Name]
  • Calls for direction - “Lets go high ground”
  • Ult tracking - “[Hero name] as [ult name]”, “[Hero name] is above/behind and looking for [ult name]”.

Some of the calls mentioned here were mentioned as “bad”. But these are calls that professional teams use all the time. Yes, it may seem obvious, but calls are meant to focus the team on a singular target or goal.

“Kill the Reaper” or “Can someone please kill the Reaper” when the Reaper isn’t there to be shot is useless and not the same thing as a target priority call. It’s more of a “this guys is recking us and no one is doing their job”. In those instances focus on what you can do yourself. Maybe suggest a hero that can counter, but only do it once.

You may run into issues like: A single enemy is on first point and everyone goes to contest, leaving the choke unguarded. This isn’t really a calls problem, but more a planning problem. You can say things like “one person go”. Even better, discuss who goes when it happens before the match starts.

The same goes for how many people are on a payload. Yes 3 are faster, but if 1 enemy is contesting it doesn’t move at all. You want your tanks farther ahead with DPS (still within LOS) making space with your Ana/Zen on payload (able to heal you). But without discussion, some people will insist everyone is on the payload. It may be useful to make a call (or a reminder) of “hey [Tank Name] push ahead and make space” and “back up, too far, let me see you so I can heal”.

Overall random teams require more “baby sitting” / reminders that make standard calls not as useful on their own. The best thing to say is to stay positive and keep the toxicity out of coms and win or lose you’ll have a better time overall.

I’d say most info is good to a degree. It depends on the situation. I take the “less is more” approach in more of a don’t call every single little thing that you notice and overwhelm people. If two of the opponents are low health, call one of them, get the pick, and then call the next. Don’t spam the same call over and over. Once, loud and clear is enough. Just because it’s not done instantly doesn’t mean it’s not in our heads. Overall, just try to stay calm with your calls.

Undescriptive call outs. ‘Doom left’ is worse than ‘Doom back left’ or ‘Doom top left’ or perhaps best, if you know callouts for the map, something like, ‘Doom on top of Jail’ or ‘Doom in hotel.’

I hate people that do that, I don’t know who is “me”.

And no I have other things to do than always look at the top left corner during a fight.

“Heal Mercy” for example is way better.

When I play junkrat, touch the payload for .1 seconds and it moves an inch, and he says “tick tock tick tock, we’re gonna win!”, while we are losing

To be fair so many teams constantly ignore basic abilities used right in front of them.

I’ll see Zarya use her personal and still be out of position but no one is hitting her. I finally say “Zarya no personal” and suddenly she’s dead

Or when the game literally first starts and the payload makes literally its first movement and Soldier says “In my day we would have had this payload delivered by now”

Really? Please explain how, Soldier.

Calling low health targets AFTER you died is pretty silly IMO.

Or doing so after the team fight has been lost.

Like, We’ve had 5 people die and the sixth person is making low health callouts.

wat.
