What’s your objective opinion on the matchmaking system?

I know we all rant sometimes during losing streaks, but emotions aside, what’s your objective opinion on the matchmaking system? I can’t help but feel that there’s some fundamental problems with it but maybe it’s just because I’m in a low rank and jaded. It just seems to very consistently putting a group of strong players against a group of weaker players, instead of having three strong players and three weak players on each team (just an example). Is there a problem with the MMR? Does it accurately rate skill?

I also feel like there’s some problems with the ranking system. My lobbies are usually about 2500sr and there are some people in my elo who clearly don’t understand the basic fundamentals of overwatch, or just don’t care, and/or who have poor mechanics. And there are others who have great aim and movement and clearly a strong understanding of positioning and abilities usage. How are all these people in the same rank?

A bonus question for anyone who wants to answer: should new accounts to competitive still start placement games in mid gold? 5 years ago this may have been appropriate, but the player base is MUCH better now and gold isn’t the same rank as it was. From my experience new accounts in gold games right now are usually in way above their heads and a major liability to whichever team their placed with.

An actual balanced and perfect system is impossible especially with people out there literally trying to work against it as they figure it out.

What would be required to actually provide consistent and competitive minded margins of skill would be overbearing, controlling, and not fun and therefor unhealthy for a game that relies on a large casual player base to survive.

So overall do you think it does well at its job, just ok, or poor? Given what can be realistically expected

I think given the parameters, limitations, and straight up resources available. It works to create reasonably fair games in most cases but has some extreme failings that are evident from occasional player anecdotes.

I don’t think it can be expected to be “Improved” without major reworks to the game that would drive people away (while admittedly attracting some others, but not enough to compensate) and “kill” the games identity and possibly make it no longer a successful enough endeavor for the company to support.

Works OK.

Tweaks are possible but there will ALWAYS be complaints.

As a solo queue, I objectively wish it didn’t get paired with absolute trogs every other game.
