Weekly Recall: Stadium Smorgasbord

It’s great to see all the work and effort going into stadium (and the game in general). I’m excited to try the new qp mode and mess around with new heroes, powers etc…

With that said, there’s a very big question mark about the draft system for me, but I’ll give it a fair shot first.

Or you could just add bind option for camera change from 3P to 1P. That would be great QoL.

I would like having more flexibility through items to build around counters, but I don’t want every hero to be totally equal against all others. The only way that works is if hero design is so homogeneous and uninteresting that it doesn’t matter who you pick. OW hero design is so far and away better than other hero-based games, and I don’t want that jeopardized in any mode.

What a horrendous change for Stadium. Splitting an already long queue AND adding No Mirrors with so few heroes? Glad you reduced leaver penalty because leaver rates are gonna SKY ROCKET.
NO ONE asked for QP Stadium. Sure some people wanted fewer rounds but all the community asked for was Crossplay. Between this and killing mercy, just more proof that the devs CANNOT actually play the game

very unhappy with the decision to remove mirror matchups in stadium. let people play the heroes they want to play. been loving the new content but this is not a good move for the players’ enjoyment, especially in lower-mid ranks where people haven’t learned every character and the builds that go with them.

It’s a fair point, but in my personal circle everyone I’ve talked to is really happy about the change, many actually were saying they want a draft mode like other competitive games have. I think it’s a pretty polarizing change, but it’s difficult to say most people are unhappy with it because happy people don’t typically rush to the forums to speak their mind, angry people do. The addition of QP is actually why this change is pretty fair, if you dont like the draft, you can just play QP and not have to worry about it.

Quick Play Stadium is a best-of-five format where you’ll earn Powers on rounds 1, 2, 3, and 5

I like how this guarantees you get at least 3 powers per match. I don’t think the quick format will live up to the epic feeling of when stadium lasts 7 rounds but it seems good for trying out stupid builds

Our new Backfill system ensures that you and your new team will have a fighting chance; once you join in, you’ll be given cash equal to the average amount your team is working with

I think backfilling stadium will always be kinda miserable but I get why the need it

Tanks will never get the first spot

Okay that is great very important

If you aren’t a tank, you can shift positions with teammates to get your clutch pick in first or hang back and flex

I’m not sure about this one. I get if they don’t have it than it will always be you want tanks going last and teammates getting screamed at if they refuse to swap with tank. I guess it is more variety this way but also that 2nd and even 3rd slot tank picks could still end up being quite problematic

One important note about Draft Mode: mirror matchups won’t be allowed, so keep that in mind when you’re strategizing. This should improve the variance of Stadium Competitive matches and reduce the likelihood of static metas

This sounds really fun like it’ll inject a lot of strategy into the draft phase. I think stadium has enough strong builds that this shouldn’t be a problem balance-wise. Hero selection wise, yeah getting locked out of 3 heroes at most (and 1 of those will be your teammate so you can coordinate with them) isn’t really a big deal, my only one problem is that I think there could’ve been 1 or 2 more projectile dps in the roster first because as of now it is possible to get stuck playing hitscan. That and I’m worried that onetricks will sort of ruin the strategizing element

If you’re in Novice, for example, but your MMR looks more like those of Elite players, you’ll quickly accelerate through the ranks.

I’m mixed on this, I kind of liked how you could play a ton and still have room to progress , but right now it’s to the point where I’m not even coming close to reaching a point where my rank stabilizes by the end of the season just because not enough playtime so it could probably be a bit faster

but everyone will get Competitive Points for their efforts

Oh so like you go 3-4 but you still get some gold gun points, yeah that’s pretty nice

It turns out that many players had no idea they could switch between first-person (1P) and third-person (3P) perspective. We’ve added a one-time banner that gives new Stadium players a chance to make this choice and a new footer shortcut has been added to give you quicker access to that menu from Hero Select.

Yeah I think it was a good idea to encourage 3P as the default and its my preference but there are a few heroes it just does not work on so I get the change

This season, we’re introducing brand new Elite skins for three Heroes

Oooh that Mei is clean for an epic skin

You right people want to boot up a mode to play their favorite hero… only for the enemy team to say nope.
Its an AGGRESIVE majority against cause its a terrible change. DRAFT on its own was really cool, but the leaver rate gonna be crazy this season until they backtrack on it.
And claiming QP makes up for this is WILD. Why would I want to play baby stadium???

This mindset that is rampant all over overwatch needs to die as soon as possible. I’m so tired of criticism and very valid criticism to the dev team being met with “just play qp derp derp”. That’s not a solution it’s a cop out. This is how games die they set enough things to “good enough” that people just stop playing. QP isn’t a mode designed for people to get the game they want it’s a mode to play a quick version of the game they want. It’s nothing but queue splitting, rule splitting garbage tbh.

How about just a draft system without the no mirror rule at first?

Then maybe do a test for an evening or two with the no mirror rule to see if it’s any good.

Right now it seems that 95% of all comments on the topic are negative towards the no mirror rule. Just look at the forum threads and reddit posts.

Listen to your customers, Stadium Team. You’re doing great so far. Don’t lose the good faith you have.

Drafts are what will most likely kill interest in Stadium. It makes the game flow tediously longer and full of counterpicks and strife. All just to play a game mode meant to be fun. I won’t be surprised if the queue times get longer and longer through the new season.

Blizzard when Stadium shipped: “OMG 68% of players play in 3rd person. People love it”

Also Blizzard:

Stadium is all about making strategic choices and camera perspective is one of those. It turns out that many players had no idea they could switch between first-person (1P) and third-person (3P) perspective

at least make us could select the same heroes as the enemy team, so no team could have the advantage by having de OP character on their team yo know…

Ps. progression changes are amazing, keep rewarding time play on players and us will stay forever

dont deny us playing with our friends, maybe instead of rank restrictions put a matchmaking for only groups? i dunno, i really enjoyed finally playing with all my friends in stadium, despite their rank.

Saludos en spanglish don OW

Yes I was in the antwatch discord test server, I remember signing the NDA (not NDC lol), and I remember the complaints of 3rd person (the main complaint was just that we could choose 1st person, but that was for playtest reasons). Still don’t remember any people complaining matches were too long

Perhaps with tank since they choose last. But I suspect we’ll see plenty of dps hard counters. The short range and slow projectile dps simply don’t have the options to match the hitscans and fast projectile types. At least not consistently.

Supports should be OK. More tools to overcome support counters in Stadium.

Too many rounds not too long.
The overwhelming feedback was 5 would be better. Less dead rounds and that each round was too quick and it made the play time feel bad. I mean it’s fine was a long time ago. But it clearly was brought up enough that Dylan literally posted what I quoted in here in response to it.

I don’t know this for sure, just quoting what I have been told. Emongg said on stream that they were keeping a close eye on this and it would just take a flip of a switch to change it to allow mirrors.

So I can only hope that if it’s a cluster they fix it quick. I like the idea of draft, I like the idea of no mirrors. I just don’t think we’ve got enough roster depth especially in stadium to handle it.

The draft mode expects DPS and Supp players to have (in the worst case scenario) 4 mains with builds ready to go that they can play competitively with, I might see this working if Stadium had a lot more heroes, but right now some games might be lost at the beginning draft, if people get unlucky and all their Stadium mains get stolen.

I like how even in different languages they still call it counterwatch

DPS hitscan dominance in Stadium will make draft absolutely miserable.

Now, instead of having Soldier and Cree every round, the team who happens to get them first will likely win.
