Weekly Recall: Overwatch Comms says Hi!

Can we expect a QP lobby without map bans in Season 18 ?

Thanks in advance.

I think the community would love more data. Personally, I think a series where you guys do deep dives into a specific hero would be great, especially with more comprehensive reasoning behind balance changes. Heroes like Sombra, Sojourn, and recently Juno, anyone with a lot of changes or particularly contentious changes would be awesome to get a deeper dive into, with data, problems devs identified, and the like.

Did they just acknowledge the existence of the forums in this tiny dev blog?

A list of simplified questions:

  • Lore when?

  • Old-school style cinematics when?

  • Can we get some more PvE events where it’s a 4 team co-op against reskined bots (like Junkenstein’s revenge/Retribution)

  • Thoughts on a TV Show?

  • Custom games update/Workshop update? (This one in particular could open up a lot of avenues for players to make their own fun, especially with access to bots and Stadium abilities)

Some pet peeves of mine:

  • Reaper’s rework being canceled due to the release of perks. This didn’t change his play-making ability as the perks he received did not make him more mobile/lethal. The perks he currently has force Reaper to move away from his target (bad for short ranged characters with big hitboxes) and/or don’t provide any significant benefits to help him where he struggles (e.g. having ammo reloaded and an extended distance on a slow, 35m TP doesn’t really do much because going farther than 35m is unnecessary and reloading doesn’t really help him close the gap. He needs some form of mobility.

  • UI in the custom games menu resets your search input every time you open anything (e.g. clicking on “view lobby” to see lobby details erases my search, making me retype everything over and over again until I find the lobby with the details I want).

  • Caricaturing characters has been a reoccurring problem recently. Some characters (e.g. Junkrat/Reaper) have been reduced to their most basic character traits (i.e. being dumb/being edgy) and it feels insulting to the character to reduce them to such a state. This happens most commonly in voicelines, but also can be seen in skins/which skins they are most often given (e.g. Reaper being given exclusively edgy skins).

  • UI in the menus is annoying to navigate. I go to look at the challenges for this seasons event and to get back to the main menu, I have to spam esc like 30 times just to get there.

  • Next to no dev presence on the forums. I understand there is a stigma around the forums being a cesspool, but I believe it has become far less annoying to navigate than it was previously. Now people making inane comments are pretty easy to spot and avoid, while a lot of the other posts have genuine thought-provoking discussions.

I would like to see the forums given a chance at having an AMA like how reddit does, since a lot of people (me included) don’t like checking/going over to reddit. I frequent the OW forums because it’s exclusively OW and I like that.

I played a ton of overwatch 1. Me and my friends had a great time with a rotation of arcade and quick play before ramping up to comp. To keep things fresh, while we queued or when quick play or arcade got old, we could always count on unique custom games. So we kept coming back for game nights week after week — it was always fresh.

When overwatch 2 came out, things started to break. The focus clearly shifted from arcade and custom games to quick play and comp. I tried keeping game nights on overwatch, but with the limited variety, it was hard to keep things new.

Recently, I tried getting back into overwatch, and now with custom games being back I hoped I could enjoy it again. But a lot of my favorite custom games don’t work or just crash because of server load, arcade is a shadow of its former self, and the game just feels less varied. I’ve loved adding stadium to the mix, it’s a great encore to paladins, but when we go to arcade or custom games for our rotation, it feels like a graveyard.

Please do something about custom games. There are so many stupidly named lobbies and games that don’t work or crash. It needs an overhaul or a facelift real bad. Not to mention finding what you want to play is abysmal. I get that arcade is no longer the focus, but people seem to be making their own modes nonetheless. So put something into that, please. I’m glad stadium is here with its variety, but I’m missing the casual fun that overwatch always had to cleanse the pallet after a rough game.

Anyway, those are my two cents

I think the dev team has been great when it comes to communication! To build on that it would be nice if we had a working site tracking hero data. Pick rates, win rates, etc. We usually only get data for very specific heroes every once and a while which feels severely lacking imo.

I strongly second this comment.

Hey! I’m a simple man and the only thing I worry about is if the summer games and lucioball are coming back next season? Therw’s still no news about it. I just love lucioball too much. I hope you would consider bringing back the competitive version of lucioball as it was so exciting to play in earlier years of the game!

This is not true. You have been working on how to get the devs to get information out to us in different ways and more regularly. You HAVE NOT been working on the other direction “between you and the devs” at all.

We don’t even know which forms of feedback the devs actively monitor between forums, X, reddit, etc. The devs are not active and do not respond on these medium outside of AMAs.

The devs should be active participants in conversations so we know they are reading some of the content of these modes of communication instead of silent. When was thee last time a dev posted on these forums for example? If they are not answering things being suggested or complained about or requested or… then this is not “between you and the devs” but rather just about the devs telling us whatever they want to talk about (which, btw, is often not what is being discussed on forums at all).

This post stinks of the pat-on-the-back HR nonsense to make the devs feel good and that they are in touch with their base. Bad news, they’re not. Although it’s good to get these things from our side, it’s a paltry effort from your side.

What are the things you all want to see covered in the future? Any topics you don’t typically hear from us but want to? Any behind-the-scenes processes you’re interested in you’d like us to chase down for you? Let us know in the comments below, on X, on Reddit, or on the forums!

Yeah, let’s talk about your absolutely massive console player base that you guys don’t ever seem to pay any attention to.:sob::pray:

But, more specifically,

  • An FOV slider for console players (90-103)

  • Your stance on supporting mouse and keyboard support for consoles

  • Dual bindings for abilities on console. (The ability to bind 2 buttons to 1 ability.)

  • Do you see xiimming as a major issue on consoles and how have you been combating against those types of cheaters?

  • Will you ever give us more options to fine-tune our sensitivity on consoles? (Example: Rival’s has over 20 knobs its players can fine-tune to perfect their sensitivity while also providing a visual clarity chart to give their players a better understanding of how changing specific numbers is going to affect their sensitivity when they’re moving their stick.

  • Are older generation consoles (Switch 1, PS4, Xbox 1, etc.) causing any development problems when it comes to Overwatch?

  • Are you satisfied with Overwatch’s cross-play and is it in both your and the players interest to forcibly pair console players who are queued with PC players into the PC pool with no way for PC players to turn cross-play off?

I would like an explanation of why PC players should not have that option.

:bangbang:For anyone reading this, add this question to the top of your list. :bangbang:

genuinely, i’d love a proper in-debth look at the process behind skin creation, who gets selected for certain skins and why, why certain design choices may be made that change from concept art to the live game and why certain heroes are so sorely neglected (baptiste often goes an entire YEAR without getting anything despite being a support!) while other heroes (namely widow, mercy, kiriko, and reinhardt) get often multiple skins per season.

I know skins aren’t part of the actual gameplay, but its been quite frustrating to have what is basically radio silence on an issue thats gotten so big i’ve seen multiple videos from big creators on it- i’ve even seen statistical dives that prove how badly certain heroes are neglected.

also, will certain skins ever get texture updates or anything like that? i look at celestial mei + some older skins and they’re just so low quality and pixelated, this would go alongside the multiple other complaints about the lack of “blizzard polish” present in other parts of the game.

OW2 comms.

You forgot the 2 there.
It’s an important difference.

I’d like to see a page where people can submit perk ideas and maybe even polls for possible fleshed out reworks for hero kits or new heroes in general. Just a way for people to feel like their voices are being heard.
Maybe add a draft ban system for competitive modes above diamond ranks.

Why are there just 3 owcs team skins when the whole roster got standard owcs ones and world cup skins just a year ago.

It would be cool if you could fix all (or at least some) of the Workshop bugs listed here: https://workshop.codes/wiki/articles/ow2-workshop-changesbugs
Also it seems that server performance for custom games has been reduced since around Stadium released. I made a game mode that worked just fine before that, but now it keeps crashing after only about a minute.

I’d like to see the devs have better communication with people who have stopped playing their games ot fundamentally understand why.

Getting feedback from the people who actively play the game may provide good insights on what people like about the game as is, but I think it’s totally ignoring people who you’ve driven away. Simply informing us on what you’re working on totally ignores complaints of people who stop playing the game.

You guys have addressed some of this after super extensive amounts of negative feedback, like 6v6 (which even then has had super limited and bare minimum investment from the devs). But there are definitely a large number of reasons people have stopped playing this game due to design changes over time, and it doesn’t really feel like you guys are accounting for this very well.

Another example is arcade and open queue. When OW2 launched with the tank rebalancing, OQ was beyond broken. It took you guys 3 seasons to implement the most basic “-150HP” change to help resolve the issue, but this had to be the laziest attempt to fix an issue I’ve seen. It seems like you guys have decided to completely neglect anything that isnt RQ QP/comp and many of these modes have degraded into obscurity over time. The waning lack of interest is probably also producing a feedback loop internally where you see no interest, and thus dont invest any further, causing it to be even more broken. People invested in their favorite arcade modes are probably never coming back to the game without commitment from the dev team to address these issues.

My interest in the game has all but totally faded outside of the OWC modes. I used to play total mayhem and CTF for hours nearly every day back in OW1 – no joke, many nights of Mayhem was probably the moment I got off work until midnight or later. Back in OW1 I had a diamond portrait that probably rolled over like 8 more times. I was probably in the top 1% of player engagement. But with the way you guys have driven the design of the game, and the total lack of investment and balance in game modes like this, this game is totally unplayable to me now. The game has diverged so far from what it used to be in OW1 that none of us want to play anymore. Outside of OWC, I’ve played maybe 5 matches in the last 6+ months. This is the same situation for nearly every friend I had who I played Mayhem with. We have all stopped playing the game.

This wouldnt be an issue if OW1 remained its own standalone game, but those core philosophy changes are super impactful. The game doesnt function anything like it used to, and has lost all the fun it used to have. Hero reworks and redesign and completely ruined a number of heroes, and the gameplay has been driven to just have a massive level of mobility and power creep that keeps requiring all sorts of “unique” solutions and passive abilities to try and fix while constantly making things worse. 5v5 alone is probably the biggest sunk cost fallacy I’ve ever seen in this game, and instead of just making some small but fundamental tweaks to problematic heroes you guys have totally overhauled the game into something so many people now hate.

Thanks for the information, if it’s possible I personally would like to hear more about the 6v6 mode and if there are any plans for it in the future. The mode currently just uses a lot of 5v5 elements, so I was curious if you guys are planning on taking a closer look at the mode and adjust things for that mode specifically. I would like to see the teams opinion on the current state of 6v6 as for me that’s the mode I play most often.

Thank you for the communication!

The devs used to post here, and it should be clear why they don’t anymore. It doesn’t matter what they say or do. They’d get bombarded with negativity by this community, and nothing positive would come from it. The few thoughtful people got buried by the average, overly-entitled rage babies that make up our community. It was disruptive and ridiculous.

We need to hold ourselves to a higher standard and raise the level of public discourse here before we can expect anyone to take us seriously.
