Genjis upper body has still alot of human flesh to it if i look at his black watch skin. So i guess hes more like a 50/50 kinda thing.
It’s almost as if political rhetoric is absolutely exhausting due to how the extreme elements of both sides have decided to pretend as if morality is linked to who you vote for. It’s definitely a mystery why gamers resist it also spilling over into games.
People aren’t bothered by political stories/themes in games. They’re bothered by the inevitable preaching and insults that follow injecting real world issues into games. Games are meant to be fun…
Real live politics are not needed. OW is divers in a natural way but some things are overkill.
All of the friends I know who play the MG series like the politics of the series. It’s literally a core part of the series.
They are STORY games after all.
I’d argue there is a slight difference between real life politics and a fictive world’s politics
You are missing the point.
Using politics within a game/fictional world is fine. Using the game to make a political real world statement is not fine.
It’s toned down in video games but everything is political in our world, games can’t escape that reality.
The slight difference you’re referring to is that the in-game political stance doesn’t match the political stance of a capitalistic company like Blizzard that made the game (or other big gaming companies where money is more important than anything else).
Politics in games often follow the trend of a current era, that’s why we had so many war games in the 80s-90s, for instance. Now that we’re (finally) more inclusive, games like Overwatch can exist. But all of this doesn’t change the fact that big companies will try to profit from a poltical current to sell you their products.
In the end, just like I said before, politics in video games were always political. They’re just less hidden because games tend to be more and more realistic in 2022.
Right. “Political” doesn’t equate to “talking points,” especially “talking points of my favored real-world political party.”
Saying “the healthiest state of a people is to be free” is political. Saying “all humans deserve equal rights and respect” is political. Saying “sometimes there’s no morally or ethically ‘right’ choice” is political. That’s not what people mean when they complain a game (show, movie) is being political.
Usually when people say a movie or show is being “too” political it’s either because they liked it better when it was subtle (like in the 90s movie) or because that specific political topic displayed in the movie goes against their beliefs.
What people fail to understand is that most movies in the 90s were also political. Not representing minorities (in a show like “Friends” for instance and that I love and that was criticized for it) is indeed political.
Hiding political topics in movies or shows is anything but apolitical. It says a lot about a certain portion of people that would rather ignore a problematic than face it. There’s nothing worse than pretending like something doesn’t exist when it’s obviously there…
So I obviously don’t agree with you. Sometimes political topics are clumsily addressed in movies, that I agree ! Not all producers and writers are always that talented (especially in Hollywood).
There is difference between adding politics for the sake of it and doing it out of necessity.
^ This.
You got them pegged. LOL
The diffrence is that I want to see the politics/problems from said world like the omnic up rising etc… I dont want a carbon copy of what is or persive there is in this world. I have enough of that already.
Who says they’re not facing it? People face all kinds of things all the time. If a person wants to enjoy entertainment without being bombarded with a particular political message, it says exactly nothing about them except that they might want to take a break for a while. I can’t stand political messaging in my entertainment no less if I agree with it. It’s distracting and annoying, and usually oversimplified to the point of being absurd.
I think it’s kind of the opposite of what you said. It says a lot about a certain portion of people that feel the need to assert a political stance in everything they do, and require that everyone else does as well.
When it’s “for the sake of it”, it’s usually what I consider as “poorly executed” or “clumsily addressed”. Political trends of an era are always used by companies to sell you any products.
For instance, in my country (Switzerland), they’re now using global warming as a tool to selling more phone contracts by stating they’re “net zero” when it comes to emissions (which is both impossible and a lie). And it works on some people.
What I’m trying to get at is that we live in a capitalistic world where real world problematics are used as a mean of enriching companies and it was always there (especially in the USA that relies on that system).
Movies from the 90s were political in terms of representations (a “white hero” that saves the world from a war or an apocalypse etc…). What’s bothering people is that companies are now even more upfront about it than 20 or 30 years ago but the system remains the same : they’re trying to sell us their products and they adapt to the current politics to target more people / clients (which is “inclusivity” in 2022).
And you just have answered why people have problems with it.
These threads are the forum equivalent of a Roadrunner cartoon. You see the coyote set the bait in it’s heavy handed trap but you just know it’s not gonna end well.
I’m sorry all games arent lukewarm status quo defenders. It’s really unfortunate when companies make political statements you might not agree with instead of safe ones you don’t care about.
We’re always bombed with political messages, the only difference is that they’re subtle most of the time. For instance, the way a white male hero was dressed and portrayed in a 90s movie influenced many men in how they should look in real life. If you were an outcast that would not follow the trends, it wouldn’t be easy on you.
That’s why we live in a free world where we can choose what to watch or not. The Twitch event most people criticized was not mandatory to follow. If you don’t like that type of discussion, well just don’t watch it.
But they were always there. The only difference is that they were subtle but they influenced the world’s opinion on many things nonetheless. For instance, having a female hero in a game was something that surprised many people 20-30 years ago because it wasn’t the standard and the games followed the real life standards were women were a minority (and still are today even if it’s improving).
Well everyone is different ! I’m not forcing anyone to be vocal about their political stance but I’m not gonna go all aggro on a company that takes their responsibility (even though it’s not 100% sincere but it’s still a good start).
Any entertainment company has an important role because they indirectly influence millions of people. So, to quote a famous Comics / movie,“with great power comes great responsibility”. Blizzard made a lot of mistakes in the past and they’re trying to do better and no matter how annoyed some of us can be about it, this is the reality of our current society.
Political issues are gonna be discussed a lot, this is where our society is headed.
The problem is the making of the political statement and not if you agree with it or not.
But why weren’t they bothered 10 years ago or 20 years ago then ? It’s not like it didn’t exist then.
Money = your vote and everything that is sold leans towards politics. There’s no escaping this unless the society decide they no longer want capitalism to rule the world (which would certainly mean no more global gaming franchise and no one wants that in these forums, I think).
