It’s not useless when you play sombra in comp, sombra is useless without vc if you’re any higher than diamond and provides much less without vc from gold to plat.
I use text chat. Half the people on voice chat are mumbling something or screaming like crazy. Don’t want to be like that. I listen to music loudly during the game anyway.
Voice chat anxiety is most common across females and camp males. Basically, if you don’t sound like a straight, 18+ man, you are at risk of dealing with toxicity for no reason. The best way to avoid this is to duo queue with someone. The best way to get over it is to join LFG groups and learn to talk with them, eventually, it’ll be second nature to jump into random games and talk to people.

Honestly, I vc’d for a good bit while having a voice that was just a few octaves too high, as in literally being referred to as a female for 80% of my matches, and I was only called a squeaker once.
Well, I guess it strongly depends on if OP has phobia, or clynical anxiety…or is just shy. This can be very different things - some of them can use your advice, with clynical diagnosis could not. chemical inbalance in brain is something beyound control…and it sucks, cause people have tendency to treat it like some “emotion”.

Wow haha. Still, my experience has been quite different, having a feminine voice as a guy. If we lose, it’s my fault and the slurs rain out :3
What rank are you in? i was in gold the majority of the time, but high plat+ is probably like that i presume. Silver seems toxic, but bronze is the gm of bad players and both are like 5% as toxic as normal comp from what I’ve seen.
Yeah, I’m in Masters. It’s not the most wonderful social experience…

My suggestion is to join a clan who is ok with you being out of voice chat. Get comfortable with them, then slowly start to open up.
Take your time. Trust is a two way street. Just because a clan seems nice doesn’t mean they’re right for you, and any clan that’s not understanding of you and your anxiety probably wasn’t right for you in the first place.

I am always afraid to put my opinion out there, so I understand how you feel somewhat. I can’t ever really understand because I’m not a girl but I can say that what helped me was starting with people you know or trust and then having good experiences. When you actually have some good experiences under your belt it will bolster your confidence going forward. You are going to run into jerks. That happens. I have seen enough of them in this game. It’s almost never directed at me, I sound like a typical white dude. But I have seen a lot of bad stuff directed at kids, at black people, at chinese people, at mexicans, at people who sound obviously gay and at women. If you want to use voicechat, sometimes you’re going to run into these people. But I have to tell you that I have had a lot of games where there was a girl in VC and people weren’t weird about it. I kind of don’t want to tell you that, because if you get hurt because I told you it really was okay, I’d be responsible, lol. I have had a couple friends who were girls in this game who only started using VC or even let me know they were girls after we had played together a while. I think that says a lot about how hard it can be. Which is why I say, start with people who you know or trust. If something goes wrong, even if a lot of people are dog piling you, it can mean a lot to have somebody around who has your back or supports you, seriously.
Story time. Some teens tried to bully me once for sounding “like a dad”. One of them was nice enough to apologize for his friend in whispers and to tell me to watch what I said because his friend was a real jerk. And then one of their moms (of the one who first started it) walked in and he was like “Hey mom say hi to Ghengis John! He’s your age and he’s playing this game with us.” And then I put on my smarmiest voice and said her son had said a lot of good things about her and her voice was lovely, was she single by any chance? They all erupted into laughter and then that kid got yelled at by his mom over the mic and they were all laughing some more. That was a good time. lol… After that they were all really cool. I wish every story of running into a jerk in voice chat ended so well but I thought you might enjoy that.

I tried for over 2 years to call hacked targets and emps , telling who where and even doin the countdown. (gold dps) and most of times people don’t care at all. But are up to cooperate when they have to flame the Sombra main, so no thanks I won’t deal with this kind of people anymore.
to me is useless as hell, also neither if I will ever reach diamond or more (but I highly doubt I will ever reach that point) I will still not use it.
too many toxic people. I prefer to keep everything muted, I have a better experience without flamers.

I’m curious to know more. What exactly is blocking you to join voice chat?
I mean, you already know that if you find some stupid guy you can mute him or something like that. So, how this anxiety works? Just genuine curiosity.
You mean other than being anxious of being negatively affected by the stupid/toxic chat before the mute button is pressed? Nothing at all really.

Honestly, I watch streamers and ironically enough the female streamers almost all seem scared to use coms most of the time even though they stream. They don’t like to use coms because of how baddly the men on the coms have treated them in the past.
If you’re a women, unless you have thick skin, and could care less what others think of you, and maybe even be able to throw back some zingers of your own when you’re messed with. I’d avoid using coms.
It’s sad that is how OW community is, but it’s the truth.
